<p>when it comes to giving a character, organization or species an alignment it is not acceptable to add a "multiple choice" style approach - some alignments are completely at odds with one another and should never be on the same page, with very few exceptions.</p><p>
</p><p>If a character is Lawful Evil they can not also be listed as Chaotic Evil, likewise you can't add them to ALL alignments at once.. if you are at odds with what alignment they may be simply leave it alone.</p><p>Now we all know some characters can change alignment with age or circumstances in the story, for these beings stick with the alignment they are most remembered for and that defines them.</p><p>
</p><p>For example many dictators like Hitler (Downfall) and Frollo became chaotic evil near the end of their reign, especially if they feel they are failing - they change from wanting law and order to simply wanting to destroy everything (Hitler wanted the world to run red and became insane, Frollo wanted to burn all of Paris and also went insane).. this doesn't mean we add "chaotic evil" to these two as they are remembered and championed Lawful Evil for most of their role and slipped into the other alignment much later.</p>

<p>The alignment system is based on Dungeon's and Dragons. When Gods such as Odin have strict standards but express them in chaotic ways the two alignments counter-act each other as long as both are frequent parts of their character and so gods like Odin are Neutral, on the law-chaos scale. In addition to that, Cthulhu is described by Lovecraft as like unto a force of nature, so neutrality might be the way to go to illustrate dispassion in his temperament.</p>

<p>So I would say Neutral Evil, but just as just cause TV Tropes has a term does not make them the be-all-end-all on it, DnD inventing a term does not me their standards need to be ours, so take my reasoning there for whatever it is worth.</p>

<p>Cthulhu is technically Amoral, like Galactus - he is beyond good or evil.. or more accurately he's from a setting where morality is not meant to take a deciding role on how the universe works (original Lovecraft was nihilistic in thinking, as such has no real belief in morality).</p><p>it wasn't until later works that the Outer and Old Gods gained a Chaotic Evil alignment, which is what they are given in more modern works but NOT original Lovecraft.</p>
