<p>well, it had to be done - I've followed Who for a while and despite the fact the show has ups and downs I'm sadly of the mind now that BBC has truly lost the plot in regards of how to handle the franchise - thus Doctor Who requires a rework or at worst a rest then a reboot (under a different generation of writers).</p><p>
</p><p>Let me be clear, the whole controversy over female Doctor is stupid for any Who fan as the lore of the series has always been that Time Lords can regenerate as different genders - heck, they don't even need to regenerate as "humans".. so the problem with the show is not this, it is a horribly apparent trend in BBC in general to push very blunt and very unneeded messages to people in a forced manner that undermines / ruins creativity.</p><p>
</p><p>That and the stories just do not match what Who is meant to be, tbh.. the enemy of the franchise is not more diversity and culture (that's what it thrives on), the enemy is writers and higher-ups who instead of truly embracing diversity and culture ram their personal views as facts and do not disguise that.. unapologetic propaganda is never a good thing and never "progressive".</p><p>
</p><p>so I'm sad to say I don't see this new season lasting long or if it does I see it as ruining a lot of the franchise unless BBC gets their collective heads out of their rear ends and wise up - Marvel made a similar mistake with the "All New" travesty but recovered somewhat with aid of MCU etc.. I hope BBC can do similar but I don't hold much hope.</p><p>
</p><p>a female Doctor should be a chance to show the creative, witty and infinitely wondrous nature of Who - not a hollow shell of a thing used for BBC to turn into propaganda pieces either under writers who are uninterested in making Who stories and just want to use the show's massive fan-base to push their agenda or higher-ups who are forcing such tactics.. again, diversity should be utilized to make incredible new stories and backgrounds, it can't do so when stifled by powers-that-be who clearly don't care about the quality over their own personal biases.</p><p>
</p><p>iif you enjoy the new season, all power to you, I just thought I'd share my views on it and why I do not think this is a great move for the franchise and certainly doesn't push it forward - Doctor is a character who can do anything, be anyone and share any message in the hands of good writers and higher-ups.. if used simply as a tool for propaganda he/she loses the power that made Doctor such a great character (in my view).</p>

<p>Being a die hard Doctor Who fan (mostly Modern Who, TBH), I can agree with you on several of these things, but about the "losing the plot" part, I personally don't find it that bad. Since there's a new Doctor, new companions, and new writer, I feel like it's time they try something new rather than stick with the same old plot. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole "Pond/River Song saga," yet the entire thing just borderline ignored the RTD stories and practically de-canonized them. But in case you were wondering, I equally enjoyed the RTD stories. But again, I can agree with you with your other pointers. While I initially found the whole "female Doctor" controversy stupid, and at that time, I thought it was simply just a bunch of fans trying to find excuses to get offended, there's nothing especially cool or unique about the female Doctor, except that she has long hair and a higher-pitched voice. It's almost like they're trying to be some kind of advertising company, trying to advertise non-bias. So overall, in my opinion, I would give the newest season a 4 out of 10.</p>

<p>I haven't been watching Doctor Who that much lately despite having enjoyed the show but, judging by the complaints people have had about the show's current state, I may find some of the elements in the current seasons rather alarming if I start watching it again. This is the reason I've started to believe that the Fifth Doctor's actor, Peter Davison, may have had a point when he got concerned that casting the 13th Doctor as female could mean "loss of a role model for boys".</p>
<p>Yeah, it's a shame Davison suffered so much abuse when he stated his own personal opinion.</p>
<p>Yeah, it's pretty sad he ended up closing his Twitter account as a result of the backlash on what he said. That's why I prefer my entertainment without political correctness.</p>
<p>the irony is the online thugs of many SJW groups are much more fascistic and cruel than any other cause and employ tactics directly out of the book of some of history's worst dictatorships - a lot of blame comes when companies like BBC etc empower these types of people by downplaying the acts they do.</p><p>no matter if one's cause is for a "good cause" or not it is one's action that defines how one is truly remembered - a lot of the SJW movement (especially online) need look on that.</p><p>

</p><p>as was pointed out, I don't care what Doctor looks like, what matters is Doctor is given their unique, heroic and inventive character while continually being challenged by new and inventive opponents - so far I don't see too much of that being done and I don't fault the actors as much as either writers or higher-ups because no Doctor can survive a season if writing is not there to help them along.</p>
