The Villains by Proxy page used to list punch clock villains as Proxies, but later it was removed. For those who don't know, punch clock villains are villains who don't do evil out of malice or because it's anything personal. It's just their job. They do evil deeds to keep a roof over their head, and food on their plates, and to pay the bills. If their off-duty, they can actually be quite friendly. It's only when their on-duty that their villains.
These villains usually are henchmen, mercenaries, bounty hunters, assassins, anyone who's paid to do evil can be a punch clock villain. Examples include Ralph Wolf, Razoul, Suzy Johnson, or even the player character in an Elder Scrolls game if they serve an evil faction.
For example, I'm playing Morrowind, and I need to keep making and level up in order to continue the quest. So I decided to join one of the game factions, and since I'm a stealth based thief and assassin, I've decided to join House Hiaalu. House Hiaalu is a pretty messed up family, their prone to backstabbing and murdering each other, they play their enemies like chess pieces, and are totally ruthless against anyone they think is a threat to their power. But they have use for stealth based characters, give rewards in the form of leveling up stealth based states, and as I said, I need the money and I need to level up. But I only do Hiaalu's dirty work when I'm doing Hiaalu quests. If I'm not doing Hiaalu quests, I'm off the clock.
