Soooo, hello everyone. I currently made this discussion to talk about Angela Baker hello there. I am here for a discussion for a possible PE that is a PE due to terrible writing. Enter in Angela Baker from the Sleepaway camp franchise. So, after rewatching the the trilogy (or Quadrology I guess?) I genuinely believe Angela could count, and i am thinking on everyone’s thoughts!
So, first, yes she passes the heinous standard, as she has a body count of over 50 people in completely brutal ways. The main brutal way being the infamous curling iron scene.
Now, I know what many of you are thinking? And allow me to answer some of your inquirers on Angela.
But isn’t Angela tragic?
In the first movie, indeed she was. Angela in the first movie was a scapegoat who was abused by her aunt and forced into conforming into being a woman after her sister and father’s death. She was bullied by virtually everyone in the summer camp, nearly molested and treated like a freak, until the point where she snapped. While she is definitely tragic in the first movie, the second and third one overwrite her tragedy. She is shown to be more sadistic, more crueler and more card carrying evil while somehow still delusional. She barley mentions her tragedy in Camp Arrorwack and eventually become worse than how she was treated.
Vigilante?
Yeahhh, nope. The first movie is a bit justified due to the pedophilic chef, the horrible abusive campers and the lead counselor beating up Ricky, the second and third movie (while trying) makes her murders completely petty and hypocritical. She murders people for doing things as horrible as…sex, drugs, smoking, being somewhat perverts, being bossy, flashing people……yeahhhh. And plus, she doesn’t also go after bad girls, as she was completely willing to bend rules, as she murders a camper for simply finding a body (this is even lampshades in the movie as the camper shouts that she didn’t do anything wrong) and all the counselors who weren’t actually evil or jerks.
The third movie fucked up the most. While the people in the thrid movie are more morally curropting, the story makes them come off more as actual broken teens than actual Hate Sinks (with the exception of two, a racist country girl and a guy who attempted to sexually assault Angela.) so Angela comes off as a worse person.
Does She Care For Ricky?
Alright, now, this is the debatable validation. Now, the first movie establishes Angela has explicit care towards Ricky, her cousin, main example is protecting him against Mel by killing him. So, this will be a prevention, right?
Well…Ricky is never seen again after the first movie and Angela never mentions him again. With that, Angela deteriorate and becomes much worse, only seeing people as tools and being willing to murder other people in front of their families. Safe to say, due to Angela’s mental state and the fact Ricky never appeared again (plus, there is the fact the fourth movie, which serves as a Kinda sequel or at very least dubiously canon has it that Ricky and Angela aren’t in good terms when Angela was sent to a mental hospital) slowly devolves Angela’s redeeming quality into a debatable validation.
Too Insane?
Now, while it’s clear Angela’s mental state deteriorated, it’s clear she has a moral agency as Angela is easy at manipulation, charming, lying and deception, and clearly shows enjoyment and delusions into doing her actions.
Affable To The Good Girls, Molly and Martha
And now to the big one. In Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3, Angela has shown t befriend two girls, Molly and Martha. She is shown to talk, laugh enjoy their company and give them advice. In the ending of Sleepaway Camp 2, Molly falls off a cliff while being chased by Angela and when Angela assumed she died, look and sounded actually upset that she dies. And in Sleepaway Camp 3 after murdering everyone else in camp, she spares Martha and her boyfriend Tony because “She thinks they are cute.”
Well, congrats, this is another thing of a victim of poor writing. While Angela was nice to Molly and Martha, she still basically psychologically abused, with Molly she tied her up, kept her in a shack with all the other dead campers and Decapitated her boyfriend right in front of her. While she did look sad and sounded sad when thinking Molly died, this is forgetting the fact that Angela was chasing Molly through the woods to presumably kill her, so this seems pretty unlikely to be true. And plus the actual ending implies that Angela was gonna kill Molly anyway, likely succeeding.
And with Martha and Tony, while she does say she’s soaking them cause they were cute, this was after the fact she forced Tommy to run around camp to find Martha before she died and then murdered two friends right next to them brutally with axes. And the way the character made it had it so it sounded more sadistic and it makes it appear more that she spared them to keep them traumatized, rather than for any altruistic reason.
So, that’s that. Given everything laid out I truly believes Angela could be PE by bad writing. Buy what do y’all think? Give your opinions, questions and 2 cents on this! It is a discussion after all.
