I haven't seen the show but based on the scenes of his backstory and mirror scenes, as well as a rap music made a few days ago about Homelander, I think he was meant to be played as a tragic character, but this is just my opinion.

I haven’t seen it either. I know the comics are really dark though.

From what I've seen, the show heavily lowers the violence that the comics had (I was honestly expecting it, there have been multiple times where violence is lowered in a TV show unlike in their comics/manga (Akame Ga Kill and Attack on Titan), but he seems to be less violent but more heinous.

Also, I actualy only added the rap song so you would get curious enough to see it, and then I would try to explain what they were saying because I love the music despite it not being in English, as it's adictive, I love the youtuber.

Homelander because his rape crime is less violent then Monty and he has other redeeming qualities

I don’t know who that other guy is. Homelanders insecurity does not change the fact that he is a vile sadistic monster.

I might have felt sympathy for Monty if the writing wasn’t complete dogshit.

Can I be honest, I'm starting to question why the people he bullied, tortured or attempted to kill feel sorry for him, I had a bully who beat me up once and I still don't feel sorry for him despite him being nicer in the following years.

@Tripp Everett ikr. He raped, bullied and mocked Tyler constantly and never once showed a single ounce of remorse about it. But suddenly when he’s dead, everyone goes “well he was a human being” so he deserved to live. Stranger Things did it way better with Max feeling conflicted about Billy’s death.
