I love him as a villain and hate him for being such a jerk and a bully. I think it is funny and at the same time it stresses me out that he never dies (and is possibly still alive).
I simply could never get enough of him, primarily due to the fact that he’s horrifying simply just by being present. Throughout the series he rarely makes a sound nor displays any emotion, he screams for his sworn enemy once and then he’s almost entirely silent. A prime example of this would be his interaction with Na-yeon, he simply enters the room only stating that he intends to reach the roof then once again goes completely silent until asked if he’s a zombie, which he bluntly dismisses. The scene primarily consists of Na-yeon carefully observing him, curious yet intimidated as he seemingly pays little attention to her and seems to show more interest in examining the room he’s in. What makes this scene even more surprising is that we’re not expecting Na-yeon to die as her previous scene appeared to be foreshadowing a redemption arc. Gwi-nam doesn’t speak again until he notices that she’s carrying food and briefly taunts her for her hunger before mercilessly devouring her, this all happens in a matter of seconds and completely subverts what’s been previously established. Gwi-nam is horrifying due to his nature being inconsistent with his character arc and bearing no sense of predictability whatsoever. It’s a trope we don’t often see due to how difficult it is to execute nowadays but if done right guarantees your villain a rightful spot among the best ever written.
I am personaly neutral about him, as he has been nothing but a jerk even if he's pretty cool in fights scenes. This is mostly because he's honestly the weakest antagonist when it comes to the villains of this show, as I think Jin Seon-moo and Lee Byeong-chan are better than him.
Hopefully season 2 can make him more complex as they’ve been setting up.
What do you think?
