He was diagnosed with schizophrenia/depression at age 11, getting hospitalized at least once after a breakdown at school because of it. He went through countless therapists and medicines since, but they all just never worked out, and it took a dark toll on his sanity.

While passed out drunk at age 19, he later woke up to find his two younger sisters, Hannah and Beth (whom he clearly loved dearly) ran outside into a snowstorm after a prank from his "friends" gone wrong, never to be seen again; the prank amounted to catfishing one sister into taking her shirt off on camera. He even tried to kill himself because of this, and it's also more or less implied that his parents are neglectful towards him.

In the end, he's the only one of the eight main protagonists who can't be saved regardless of player choice, either getting his head crushed by his own sister who turned into a Wendigo, or turning into a Wendigo himself. The latter fate is heavily implied to be worse than death, your mind being submerged within your own body as the cannibal demon possessing it slaughters people against your will. I wouldn't wish either ending upon even my worst enemy.

Excluding these points, he's one of the only two main protagonists in the entire story (alongside Jessica) who never even thinks about murdering someone, so he has no real MEH crossings. It's really saying something when even Sam and Chris, the two people Josh hurt the most (and both of whom had nothing to do with the prank that killed his sisters) still sympathize and wanna help him after everything he did.

Honestly, Infinite the Jackal.

Tai Lung had the saddest. He was abandoned as a child and raised by Shifu. But Shifu inflicted harsh training on him. He still kept on trying to impress him and all of these efforts were nothing when Oogway doesn't select him to be the Dragon Warrior.

Runner up is Darth Maul, who was taken away from his mother and groomed into a Sith Lord. Then his legs were cut off and he eventually becomes a crime lord in an attempt to go back to Sidious's rule. However, they were all for nothing Sidious abandoned him, killed his family members and later tortured him to death. He tries getting Ahsoka to join him in ending Palpatine's rule but she refuses. Later, Maul tries get Ezra to join and uses extreme methods to get him to his side, but in the end, he also refuses. Overall, he was forced into the world of darkness with no way out of it and it's best shown when he dies that he's a victim.
