Doesn't even need to be that deep, public domain is about allowing characters to be free use, it's pure laziness to make them into slasher-villains when all these "creators" do is literally slap the face of the character onto a generic killer and claim it as a new franchise.
If you want to make a public domain horror franchise there's millions of horror characters in public domain.
There really needs to be a law passed that public domain doesn't mean you just get to do whatever you want, you should be forced to at minimum keep the spirit of the character in any work you use them in, public domain or not, thus if you use Mickey Mouse for example you have to keep him at least within the "spirit" of the original character.
This is only going to get worse otherwise, since Superman and Batman are public domain within three years.
