Rameses was the pharaoh of Egypt and a man who considered Moses a brother. However, their bond would not suffice to free the Israelites from slavery, especially given the fantastic monuments he intended to construct from their labor. It took numerous plagues and even the death of his own son before Ramesis finally relented and let Moses' people go. However, he quickly changed his mind and pursued the Israelites in a vengeful frenzy across the sea. Unfortunately for Egypt, the sea closed as the last Israelites escaped, washing away Rameses' chances for revenge.
