"Boss-eyed" Thế is the overarching antagonist of the Vietnamese crime drama series The Arbitrator, based on the Israeli crime drama series of the same name.
He is the leader of the Thiên Long Gang and a powerful drug lord who is also Phan Quân's business rival. He is Phan Quân's former mentor, but the latter has since grown powerful and treated him with contempt. Because of this, Thế hates Phan Quân and only tolerates him for being a high-ranking distributor for the Thiên Long Gang. He later manipulates Phan Quân's long-lost son, Lê Thành, into helping him to destroy Phan Quân's criminal empire, the Phan Thị Group.
He was portrayed by the late Chu Hùng.
Personality[]
Long before Thế ever appears in person, Phan Quân and Lương Bổng already say that he is very cunning, manipulative, dangerous and mysterious, rarely showing his face to anyone. When Thế finally debuts, he is exactly what you would expect from a crime lord. He presents himself as affable and understanding, but is in truth ruthless and sadistic, willingly to kill anyone who displeases him. Even Phan Quân, himself a ruthless crime lord, is disgusted by Thế's actions.
However, it also appears that Thế is well past his prime. Rarely does he ever display the cunning that Phan Quân and Lương Bổng said he had, he is instead a pathetic man who believes himself to be smarter than he actually is, despite his plans fail spectacularly, most of them relying on bribery and espionage. And even though he likes to kill people, the only one he actually successfully kills is "Anabas" Hùng, and even then, it's only because Hùng commits suicide to avoid being caught. He is even a coward since he tries to hide from the recently released "Toothy" Phúc. After numerous humiliations, he becomes paranoid and constantly yells at his men, causing them to lose trust to him and defect to the Bạch Hổ Gang.
Phan Quân also admits that he never actually looks at Thế highly, and his condescending attitude angers Thế so much that he only tolerates him for being a high-ranking distributor for the Thiên Long Gang. However, upon seeing the opportunity to take down the Phan Thị Group in Lê Thành, Thế finally shows his manipulative side via forging the ADN test paper to convince the latter that he is his father. While Lê Thành eventually figures out the truth and kills Thế alongside Phúc when Thế is still celebrating, Thế's plan ultimately proves successful against Phan Quân, proving that he is not so harmless after all and Phan Quân and Lương Bổng's words about him did have their own merits.
Biography[]
"Boss-eyed" Thế is the leader of the Thiên Long Gang, who once took Phan Quân into the gang and mentored him. A notorious figure in the underworld, he used money to recruit competent people to his cause and rarely showed his face to the public, to the point that he was even once yelled by the restaurant owner when eating phở. Phan Quân later started his own empire with the Phan Thị Group and became a powerful crime lord on his own right. At some point, Thế was arrested.
At the start of the series, Thế is released from prison. Now back to business, he and his most trusted henchman, "Stunted" Tùng, restart their drug trade with the Phan Thị Group. However, Phan Quân only pays them half since he has already eliminated the drugs due to Phan Thị's prohibition of them, much to Thế's anger. When "Toothy" Phúc, the leader of the Bạch Hổ Gang, is also released, Thế decides to hide himself out of fear. Later on, Thế's trade with the Bạch Hổ Gang also fails and he and his men are forced to present themselves to Phúc. Those humiliations make Thế become paranoid and constantly yell at his men, so eventually most of them defect to the Bạch Hổ Gang.
Angered with Phan Quân's condescending attitude and many of his men betraying him, Thế wants to take down the Phan Thị Group at all cost. He sees the opportunity in Lê Thành, who claims to be Phan Quân's long-lost son. Amidst the tragedies that have recently happened in Lê Thành's life and the chaos within the Phan Thị Group, Thế makes his move and sets up fake ADN test paper to convince Lê Thành that he is his real father. Lê Thành believes this and begins to work for Thế against Phan Thị.
Thanks to Thế's manipulation, Lê Thành shoots Hồ Thu dead and causes the Phan Thị empire to slowly collapse. However, Thế doesn't celebrate for long, as Lê Thành has hidden the gunpowder in his truck of drugs, killing both Thế and Phúc. Despite his death, Thế has posthumously successfully taken down the Phan Thị Group and manipulated Phan Quân into killing Lê Thành.
