THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IT COULD HAVE ENDED.

WAR NO LONGER NEEDED ITS ULTIMATE PRACTICIONER. IT HAD BECOME A SELF-SUSTAINING SYSTEM. MAN WAS CRUSHED UNDER THE WHEELS OF A MACHINE CREATED TO CREATE THE MACHINE TO CRUSH THE MACHINE. SAMSARA OF CUT SINEW AND CRUSHED BONE. DEATH WITHOUT LIFE. NULL OUROBOROS. ALL THAT REMAINED IS WAR WITHOUT REASON.

A MAGNUM OPUS. A COLD TOWER OF STEEL. A MACHINE BUILT TO END WAR IS ALWAYS A MACHINE BUILT TO CONTINUE WAR. YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL, OUTSTRETCHED LIKE ANTENNAS TO HEAVEN. YOU WERE BEYOND YOUR CREATORS. YOU REACHED OUT FOR GOD, AND YOU FELL. NONE WERE LEFT TO SPEAK YOUR EULOGY. NO FINAL WORDS, NO CONCLUDING STATEMENT. NO POINT. PERFECT CLOSURE.

~ An unknown party (presumably Hell) on the Earthmover and its creation

The 1000-THR "Earthmover" is a major antagonist in the video game ULTRAKILL, serving as the final boss of the Violence layer who is fought in 7-4. A member of the Earthmovers, a line of colossal war machines used at the end of the Final War, the 1000-THR Earthmover presumably participated in the mass destruction and chaos its brethren brought upon the world, wreaking havoc on the environment before being deactivated as humanity decided to join forces and repair the damage war had done. However, the 1000-THR Earthmover would somehow be sent to Hell along with some of its brethren, where it would continue battling its kin endlessly until V1 finally killed it.

Appearance[]

Like other Earthmovers, the 1000-THR Earthmover is a humongous, centaur-like, quadrupedal machine composed of metals varying in shades of grey, towering over even the Corpse of King Minos. Its build is somewhat similar to that of a giraffe or llama, with long slender legs rooted to the ground via odd red tendrils. It has a humanoid, neckless torso with six white eyes, a large antenna on its left shoulder and a large spear-like weapon on its right arm which fires out electrical blasts. The 1000-THR Earthmover also possesses a fully furnished city on its back, complete with alleyways and electricity and is controlled by a large, red biomechanical brain. Its interior is also filled with a fleshy substance and hot blood to flush out intruders.

Biography[]

Story[]

Created as a member of the Earthmover model line, 1000-THR and its brethren were the result of the ongoing machine arms race, designed to be the ultimate weapons. Nicknamed the "Horsemen of the Apocalypse", the Earthmovers laid waste to the entire earth, destroying cities effortlessly and eventually, leaving the only habitable areas to be on their backs. Outfitted with shield generators, the Earthmovers served as fortresses and holding areas for smaller machines, eventually causing all warfare to be reliant on them.

However, with the destruction the Earthmovers caused, the sky would begin to be filled with soot and ash, blotting out the sun and cutting them off from their solar power source, causing the Earthmovers to power down. With no more weapons to fight with, humanity finally realised their mistakes and united together to amend the damage dealt to the world, beginning the New Peace. As such, most of the Earthmovers would remain on earth as inanimate corpses, a grim reminder to humans of their folly. Despite this, some Earthmovers, including 1000-THR, would somehow end up in Hell, where they continue battling each other in the layer of Violence till this day.

During the events of ULTRAKILL, V1 would run into 1000-THR during its battle with another Earthmover, prompting V1 to scale the massive machine and take it down from the inside. After defeating its defence system, V1 would enter the machine, narrowly escaping termination via the flushing system and destroy 1000-THR's brain, causing an emergency shutdown. V1 rushes outside before the Earthmover breaks down, and just before 1000-THR can fire its weapon at it, it's hit by a blast of electricity from the other Earthmover, causing it to explode into numerous pieces.

Gameplay[]

1000-THR itself is not fought directly, with most combat being against its numerous internal weapons instead. Its defence system, appropriately named the 1000-THR Defense System, is equipped with lasers, mortars, rockets and hell energy orbs which, while deadly, are all stationary, allowing V1 to maneuver around them with ease. The 1000-THR's brain is protected by a shield empowered by six Idols which V1 must destroy to open, revealing its brain which is encased in a tank that fires lasers, occasionally summoning Idols to make itself invulnerable.

Trivia[]

  • The Earthmovers seem to have been made by Japanese manufacturers based on the Japanese text on them. As the Japanese word for "thousand" is pronounced "sen", this would mean that 1000-THR's name can be pronounced "Centaur", referencing the creatures present in the Violence layer of Hell in Dante's famed poem, Inferno which ULTRAKILL takes heavy inspiration off.
    • "THR" may also be an abbreviation of "Thor", referencing the machine's ability to shoot lightning blasts.
  • The Earthmover's name is a reference to the song "Earthmover" by Have A Nice Life which describes giant machines destroying the world, similar to what the Earthmovers have done in game.
    • Furthermore, the name of the level it is fought in "7-4:...LIKE ANTENNAS TO HEAVEN" is a reference to the album "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, specifically its last song.
  • The escape sequence in the 1000-THR boss fight is likely a reference to Metroid, in which Samus must quickly escape the planet she's on after defeating Mother Brain.
  • Along with its own defence system and the Hideous Masses, 1000-THR is the only stationary boss outside of the flesh constructs found in the Prime Sanctums.
  • If one looks closely, 1000-THR actually has a tiny top-hat on its model. There is also a plush of a dog representing the game’s lead 3D modeller Victoria Holland within the Earthmover’s brain.
  • As V1 was created close to the end of the war, when the Earthmovers were in use and is rather small in size, perfect for infiltrating the huge robots, it's implied that V1 was produced specifically to combat 1000-THR and its brethren.
    • Likewise, it seems that the two instinctually target each other, with 1000-THR's healthbar appearing as soon as V1 lays eyes on it (contrasting the cutscenes that most other major bosses had) and 1000-THR itself stopping its fight against the other Earthmover and sounding an alarm upon noticing V1.
