~ Aaron preparing to kill Veronica. |
Aaron Echolls is a major antagonist in the mystery drama tv series Veronica Mars, serving as the main antagonist of season one and a secondary antagonist of season two. He is the richest person in the town of Neptune, being an enormously famous movie star. He is also the father of Trina and Logan Echolls, being abusive towards the latter. He is eventually revealed to be the murderer of Lilly Kane, who he was having an affair with.
He is played by Harry Hamlin, who also portrayed Cameron Kaiser in Batman: The Animated Series, Charles Patton in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Randall Bailey in Law & Order.
Personality[]
On the outside Aaron was a kind and affable person. He was an avid philanthropist and was always polite and charming when speaking with the press. He maintained this persona around his daughter Trina, who he was caring and loving towards. He was very good at talking his way out of situations and knew what to say and do to use his wealth and popularity to get what he wanted.
However, underneath this, Aaron was an adulterous and temperamental sociopath. He would violently beat anyone for the most minor slights if he felt he could get away with it, including his own son, and would feel no remorse for his actions, even if they included murder. Despite this, he preferred to think of himself as a good person, trying to be a good father when he wasn't being abusive. Even when he drove his wife to suicide, he preferred to think that the act had nothing to do with his constant cheating and emotional abuse. When he was confronted with the horrible things he had done, he refused to take responsibility, and even sadistically mocked those he had harmed.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
“ | He used to beat my mom until she passed out. She'd kick makeup all over her face and wear dark glasses around the house. But you know, I could always recognize the signs. Then finally, I got the courage up to try and stop him. Man, I was just a scrawny little kid; he's built like a wall. He put his cigarette against my hand and said, "nice try kid" and you can still see the scars. | „ |
~ Aaron about his childhood. |
Aaron was born to unnamed parents. Apparently, his father was abusive and would beat him and his mother before drinking away any guilt.
When he grew up, Aaron became a very popular movie-star, starring in numerous action flicks. During this time, he became close with his stuntman Curly. He also met Lynn on the set of the movie Pursuit of Happiness. Despite him constantly cheating on her, they got married, and moved to the town of Neptune in Southern California.
Raising His Family[]
Aaron and Lynn had adopted a girl named Trina, and had a son named Logan a few years later. While his children were growing up, Aaron was always kind and loving to Trina, physically abusive towards Logan, who he would beat for a minor slight, and emotionally abusive to Lynn, who he constantly cheated on.
When Logan was sixteen, Aaron had an affair with his girlfriend, Lilly Kane. The affair ended when Lilly discovered that he had had a camera recording them having sex and took the tapes he had made. Aaron discovered that they were gone and confronted her at her house. When she began to mock her, he murdered her before fleeing the crime scene. Fortunately for him, a different man named Abel Koontz confessed to the crime, and nobody ever suspected Aaron. However, he was never able to discover where Lilly hid the tapes.
Aaron took a few blows over the next year. Firstly, his son Logan was caught hosting bum fights, which hurt his public image. After making Logan work at a soup kitchen, the teenage boy told the press that Aaron had told him that he was going to millions of dollars to charity. Aaron had had no plans of doing this but was forced to pay to save his image, and punished Logan physically for the lie. Secondly, he received a death threat from a woman he had had an affair with, and at his Christmas party, she stabbed him.
Aaron survived the stabbing, but his affairs are now public, with lots of tabloids writing about them. Aaron hires a private investigator to find out who is telling the press all about him, and discovers it's his wife, Lynn. Aaron swears to ruin her life if she ever tries to divorce him, which prompts her to commit suicide. In response to her death, Aaron decided to quit acting and spend more time with his family.
Aaron became more involved in his children's love lives, spending time to talk to his son's new girlfriend Veronica Mars and tell her that he approved of her. He discovered that Trina was being abused by her boyfriend, Dylan Goran. In response to this development, Aaron invited the man to his home for a barbeque and beat him withing an inch of his life.
A few days later, Aaron attended a party hosted by the Kanes, and snuck into Lilly's room looking for the tapes of him and her having sex. When Veronica and Duncan Kane (Lilly's brother) came into the room, he hid in the closet and saw them find the tapes in a heating vent. After watching them, Veronica ran to her car and got in. Before she drove off, Aaron snuck into the back seat. Veronica began driving towards her house, but when she discovered that he was in her car, she purposely crashed it. Aaron was briefly knocked out, but quickly came to and followed her to a nearby abandoned house. He found her on the patio and knocked her unconscious, before discovering that she had hidden the tapes. So, he locked her in an old refrigerator. When she came to, he demanded she tell him where the tapes were. Although she refused, he saw them on the roof of the house and grabbed them. In order to cover his tracks, he covered the fridge with oil and lit it on fire. At that moment, he was attacked by Veronica's father Keith. Aaron ran off of the patio and tried to get a nearby driver to help him get away. However, the police arrived, and he was arrested.
Aaron's Trial[]
Initially, everyone thought that Aaron was guilty, with Keith Mars writing a book about it and a documentary being made of it. However, when the tapes of his affair with Lilly was destroyed, things began to turn around.
At some point, Aaron was approached in prison by Kendall Casablancas, who wanted to buy his land. Aaron agreed to give it to her, but in exchange, Kendall had to plant Duncan's hair at the crimes scene to make it appear he had done it. Kendall did so.
Having a cunning lawyer and telling believable lies helped Aaron pin the crime on Duncan, and he was let out of prison. That night, he stayed in a hotel and slept with Kendall. However, when she left the room, he was shot in the head by Clarence Wiedman under orders from Duncan, ending Aaron's life.
