Emmanuel, also known as the Abbot, is a major antagonist of Castlevania Nocturne. He serves as Erzsebet's personal Forgemaster, whom seeks to demolish the French Revolution because he sees the people only creating bloodshed for the sake of bloodshed. Abbot Emmanuel leads a sect from the Order of St. John and is the father of Maria Renard.
The Abbot is voiced by Richard Dormer and by Akio Kato in the Japanese Dub.
Personality[]
“ | Emmanuel: How many times does the entire course of history come down to the choice of just one man? Constantine. Charlemagne. Me. Who knows what further abominations this revolution will bring? Tera: If your God is as powerful as you say, he doesn't need you to fight for him. You're not doing this for the sake of the Church, you're doing this for the sake of your own vanity. Emmanuel: I've often thought about Judas. Traitor. Turncoat. But what would have happened if he hadn't done what he did? Was the whole world saved because of one man's betrayal? |

~ Emmanuel talking about Judas, the infamous betrayer of Christ, while trying to justify his actions to Tera and Maria. |
Emmanuel is a deeply religious man with a strong sense of order and justice. Like any religious individual, he often prays to god always asking questions and seeking answer for any situation he is in. He is the leader of the Abby and holds great influence in French politics with people going to his church to seek council from God. From what Tera has stated, Emmanuel was a generous and compassionate man, who willingly took her in when she ran away from home due to the tragedy she has faced. Many refused to help her and found her suspicious but not the Abbot. Despite her status as a Speaker magician, he still cared for her and fell deeply in love with her to the point of producing a child, who they name Maria.
Though gaining a child through priesthood is controversial, he kept his relation of Maria and Tera a secret so their lives would not be in danger, which shows the amount of care he has for them. But when the peasants start their revolt against the government, Emmanuel start to crumble as a person. He thinks that the revolution is against God's will on earth and that the people are only doing it for the sake of bloodshed. He views them as godless and claim to have seen the worse out of them. According to him, he has seen acts of desecration towards religious structures and people being killed for not choosing a side. He goes on further of seeing violence and rejection of religion over what he claims "reason."
Despite appearing to be pious with understandable reasons to dislike the revolution, Emmanuel, in all honesty, is a hypocrite. He sides with the vampiric aristocrats to demolish the revolution and creates night creatures for them. He's even aware of the Vampire Messiah rumor and knew it was Erzsebet Bathory even though he dismissed the rumor when Richter and Maria told him about it. Though he has noble intentions in the alliance as he does not completely trust the vampires, Emmanuel does not seem to understand that his alliance will bring more harm than good including to himself and his family. The Abbot believes that he is doing it in the name of god but works with unholy vampires, who seek to block out the sun, and studies the practice of Forgemastering. Later on, he becomes more delusional making illogical decisions that make the situation worse.
When he was told by Bathory to sacrifice his daughter, he became immensely shock wondering how she got that information. When he was visited by Maria, she ask to come with her and is willing to accept him as her father. Though happy about this news, he still had his night creatures to capture her so he can sacrifice her but with the idea that her soul will be forgiven and enter heaven. All things become worse for him when Erzsebet revealed that she was going to turn Maria into a vampire but instead of his daughter its Tera. He cries that he has condemn his wife to a horrible fate, a fate that he was trick into.
Appearance[]
Emmanuel is an ordinary middle-age man with blond hair and blue eyes. He wears a priest-like robe with a giant cross on it and a black cloak. He also has white strides on his hair, which reference the amount of stress he's going through.

The Abbot tries to sacrifice Maria but was stop by Tera but he ask her why hasn't someone takes their daughter's place as a sacrifice. Tera release Maria from her bindings and yell at Emmanuel for his hypocrisy and then use the Abbot's book to banish his machine back to hell. Erzsebet finally arrives in her goddess form and plans to turn Maria into a vampire with the shock of everyone in the room. Despite his protest, Tera offers herself to Erzsebet as the lamp and Emmanuel confirming his love for her. He commands them to let the rest go but they refuse and Emmanuel remains shock from witnessing his lover becoming a vampire and Drolta heading to kill those who are close to him.
Trivia[]
- The Abbot seems to contrast the Bishop from the original series in several ways.
- Both are respected figures in their community and hold great influence in politics. But the Bishop is more so feared by others.
- The Abbot has well-intentions as he strongly disapproves of the violence in the revolution and wants to stop it. While the Bishop does not hold any morals and only does things for self-benefit.
- Emmanuel deeply loves his family and is willing to protect them but the Bishop on the other hand holds no humanity for anyone.
- Despite being on their side, Emmanuel is only supporting the vampires to get rid of the revolution and it's implied that the Abbot is planning a rebellion against them with his night creatures. The Bishop, however, used Dracula's war to establish his own selfish views across Wallachia.
- Despite Tera and Maria's status as mages, he still cared about them and never judged their usage of magic but the Bishop does not like anything relating to magic as he sees it as heresy.
- The Bishop never admits his faults thinking that he is in the right but the Abbot is aware of his flaws and does not try to be above others.
- Though it was horrible for him to attempt a sacrifice on his daughter, the Abbot genuinely believed that her soul would enter heaven where she would be at peace, and struggled to kill her. But the Bishop burned Lisa Tepes simply because he did not like her and showed no remorse in the action.
- What Emmanuel says about the revolutionaries is true to real-life history as many revolutionaries at the time tried to dechristianize France while desecrating many religious structures. Not only that, the revolution became more violent after the execution of King Louis XVI as many started to fight each other over power, which led to someone worse to lead the country.
- When Emmanuel mentions people preferring reason over religion, he is referencing the Cult of Reason, which was an atheistic religion that was meant to replace Christianity within the country.
