You like to negotiate? Good, we negotiate. You seem to think you have leverage. You have no leverage. I say two words and you become a corpse. Yes? Two words? Do you understand how fast it happens? You are a corpse, they drag your body outside, I play chess with your friend. Later on, maybe I take the little redhead back to my room, give her a bath, see what she looks like without the dirt. Or maybe not, maybe no bath, maybe tonight I want to f*ck an animal. When in Rome, yes? Now think, boy, think carefully before you open your mouth. For your sake, for your mother's sake if the b*tch still lives, think.
~ Abendroth threatening Kolya.

Abendroth is the main antagonist of David Benioff's City of Thieves. He is a nazi colonel participating in the siege of Leningrad during 1941 to 1942. As a high-ranking member of Einsatzgruppen, he was responsible for attacking towns around the city and killing Jews, communists, and anyone else who posed a threat to the nazi campaign. He was also a notorious rapist and known for being a chess enthusiast.

Appearance[]

Being a high-ranking member of Einsatzgruppen, Adendroth was the nazi ideal of an Aryan. As such, he had piercing blue eyes and whitish blond hair that he kept neatly slicked upward. There was also a bit of stubble on his chin. He was also tall, muscular, and extremely intimidating.

Personality[]

On the outside, Abendroth seemed somewhat friendly. Although he made it no secret he was a nazi, he could be charming and pleasant, even to people working against him. He was very obviously antisemitic but claimed that there were some things Jews did well. He enjoyed chess and greatly valued playing against a skilled player. He also acted somewhat honorable, although the extent of this was unknown.

However, underneath this exterior, he was a truly depraved a psychotic individual. He truly did not care about anything but his own desires and had no second thoughts about committing despicable acts simply to please himself. He was sadistic enough to scare other nazis, and enjoyed putting innocent people through the most brutal forms of torture he could conceive of personally. He committed acts of absurd cruelty casually, and even took pride in raping teens and murdering thousands. He also had a subdued temper, which he expressed through delivering very real threats.

Biography[]

Abendroth was born in Germany and joined the nazi military at a young age. He quick rose through the ranks through intelligence and ruthlessness, eventually becoming a colonel. Due to being Aryan, he was able to join the Einsatzgruppen and led a troop during the invasion of Russia.

During the siege of Leningrad, Abendroth had his men attack and destroy various towns surrounding the city. In each town, he would spare some of the prettiest teenage girls and allow them to live in a house where he would provide food and anything else they would need. However, in exchange they would have to allow him and his men to rape them. Abendroth's favorite sex-slave was a girl named Zoya, who he viewed as his own personal property. He raped her every night and broke her until she tried to escape into the wasteland around Leningrad. She failed, and as punishment, he personally sawed off her feet and tortured her to death.

Abendroth had a large group of prisoners, and tricked any who were literate into exposing their abilities so he could kill them. He used the rest for forced labor in the steel mills. One prisoner named Lev heard that he enjoyed chess and challenged him to it. Abendroth was hoping to play against a skilled opponent and accepted the deal, stating that if he won, he would kill the prisoner and his friends, but if he lost, he would let them survive their time in his captivity and give them the eggs that they mysteriously requested. Abendroth enjoyed the game but lost. However, right as the game ended, he saw Lev trying to pull a knife from his boot and tackled him. Even tackled, Lev was able to stab Abendroth a couple of times, and the man died from blood-loss.

Trivia[]

  • Abendroth is apparently married, as he is mentioned to be wearing a wedding ring. He is obviously very unfaithful towards his wife, judging by how much he rapes his Russian prisoners.
  • Despite being the novel's main antagonist, Abendroth is really only in the book for about thirteen pages. However, he is alluded to and spoken about several times before he appears.
