~ Abigail Mathers to Michael De Santa, indirectly exposing her as her husband's murderer. |
Abigail Mathers is a Stranger & Freak character of the 2013 video game, Grand Theft Auto V, appearing as a minor antagonist. She is the wife of the late Frank Mathers, who was killed in a sabotaged submarine by Abigail, who has Michael De Santa collect the pieces of the submarine in order to collect Frank's life insurance.
She was portrayed by Beth Chamberlin.
Biography[]
Past[]
At some point in Abigail's life, she became the assistant of Frank Mathers, a TV producer, as well as a married man. However, in 2009, the two started an affair, which led to Frank leaving his wife and two kids in order to marry Abigail. However, a few years later, Abigail sabotaged the submarine Frank was going to test and he drowned oversees. However, he wrote on the airlock before his death that it was sabotaged.
Grand Theft Auto V[]
Abigail knows that if the submarine remaining are found, she will be suspected and then arrested. After either Franklin Clinton, Trevor Philips, or Michael De Santa purchases the Sonar Collections Dock, she becomes a Stranger and Freak, to only Michael. When Michael approaches her, she informs him of how her husband had drowned in a submarine a few years back. Michael recounts the rumors of how someone tampered with the airlocks, however, Abigail instantly denies this, saying that there has been no evidence of this happening. Soon after, Abigail asks Michael to collect the various pieces of the destroyed submarine scattered throughout the ocean surrounding San Andreas, in order for her to both collect his life insurance and to make her "sleep much easier". Michael accepts and she provides him with a boat to conduct research in the ocean.
After Michael retrieves the submarine pieces, he brings them back to Abigail, who is both surprised and overjoyed to this news, despite Michael still being suspicious over the idea of Abigail being the reason Frank drowned. In order to manipulate Michael into not believing this, she claims that the police is on his death, and how she is going to bring this to the FIB. Instead of rewarding Michael an exceptional reward for him finding the submarine pieces, she gives him $10 and a rare photo of Frank with his signature. Realizing that Abigail is the reason for Frank's death, the player can either spare or kill Abigail. However, if the player simply follows her, she instead drives to the airport wether than the FIB Headquarters, located in Downtown Los Santos, implying that she wants to leave San Andreas and hide. At the airport, she will leave her car and claim that Michael is harassing her, giving him a three-stars wanted level.
Personality[]
When interacting with Abigail for the first time, she presents herself as being a charismatic, sophisticated and highly intelligent individual. She acts very lively and energetic, as well as nice to Michael throughout her encounters, as well as also stating how much she loved her husband, even though he was a "cruel and heartless man".
However, on the inside, Abigail is a manipulating, greedy and sadistic psychopath who chooses to hide in plain sight. As she talks to Michael, she talks about how Frank psychologically abused her, in order to paint herself as the victim, when in fact, she was the true abuser, even though he left his sick wife and five children in order to marry her. Not to mention, Abigail murdered her husband only because she wanted to have his money, after he became insanely rich.
Abigail's more sociopathic side is explored further during her last mission. When Michael shows her full proof of how someone tampered with the airlocks, she acts as though she had no idea, which causes her to act more and more anxious as the cutscene goes on, as begins to walk away slowly from Michael, giving him only an autographed picture of Frank and $10. Overall, while Abigail presents herself as being a kind, charming woman, she is in fact, a sadistic and greedy psychopath.
