No one murders so well as the British. It's our number one export.
~ Abijah Fowler
It was the last thing I ever did because I had to. I control my life now. Every bite.
~ Fowler explaining the reasons for his hedonistic behaviour.

Abijah Fowler is the main antagonist of the first season of the Netflix animated series Blue Eye Samurai. He is an Irish arms dealer based in Japan and the business partner of Heiji Shindo.

While swearing fealty to the shogun, he secretly plans to overthrow him and become the true ruler of Japan. As one of the only four white men in Japan at the time of Mizu's conception, he is a candidate for being her father and is therefore targeted by Mizu alongside the other three.

He is voiced by Kenneth Branagh, who also played Iago in Othello, Dr. Arliss Loveless in Wild Wild West, Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Andrei Sator in Tenet.

Personality[]

In the matter of the death of civilizations, it comes down to technology. We invented worse first. Not fair… but here we are.
~ Fowler overthrowing the shogun.

Abijah is best described as incredibly ruthless and sadistic, carrying the philosophical determination to overthrow the shogun and rule Japan which only he could see befitting his views. He often indulges in torturing and murdering to satiate his boredom when needed and is quite perverted, enjoying his spare time having sex with prostitutes he abuses. He is known for his prejudice against the Japanese, being disgusted with their culture, even though he seems to tend to indulge in painting and exploring new ways of sexual desire, as he puts in, "expand his imagination".

He is as arrogant, but at the same time, skilled and intelligent. Abijah is capable of leadership and often speaks in a seemingly polite manner with his business partners, though in a much more superficial way to his wording. Despite that, he isn't above getting rid of anybody who backstabs or the complete opposite, selling out even his two comrades, Skeffington and Routley. He also seems to have no faith in Christianity though believed to bargain a wager that should Heaven be at his side should he succeed in overthrowing the shogun. Abijah is often prone to outbursts, as he kills a subordinate and slashes down a table in half when receiving news of all of the Four Fangs dead.

His desire for full control over his life stems from his dark past, having lost his parents and cannibalized his own sister for survival, in return, emphasizing his determination to ensure his fate will be assured for him to withhold. Despite being twice the size of anyone around him and his ruthlessness, he's proven to be a coward when fighting against Mizu is no longer an option due to her being "too crazy" but resorts to dirty tactics when needed.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Abijah Fowler was born in Ireland along with his younger sister, who he was deeply protective over. As a young boy, he faced the Nine Years War, when the English Tudors attacked Ireland and destroyed the lands of Clan O'Neill, causing mass famine. This famine presumably killed Abijah's parents, and he was forced to keep his sister alive by feeding her his own blood. This ultimately didn't work, and Abijah spent weeks trying to fend off scavengers who tried to eat her body. Eventually he burried her but, in order to stay alive, ate her kidneys first.

He eventually became a wealthy and powerful seafaring merchant and arms dealer, with contacts all around the world. At some point he, along with a drug dealer named Violet and two slavers named Skeffington and Routley, contacted Shogun Ito, and convinced him to let them in Japan despite the nation's law against Europeans. The Shogun allowed them to move their operations to his home under the condition that they stay in specific towers scattered around the country and gave him some of their wares.

Upon entering Japan, he and the rest began their operations by smuggling British firearms, opium, and "flesh" (as in humans), which during the time he somehow met Heiji Shindo and became business partners with him. However, from there he was kept inside a castle as appointed by the shogun when the borders of Japan sealed off and is only allowed to visit Edo once a year, much to his frustration. From there, Abijah made a vow to kill off the Shogun and his entire family with an army of thousands, soon later it would be time for him to conquer Japan and remake everything his way once he unsealed the borders.

For the next twenty years, he and Shindo would secretly continue their operations with smuggling arms, opium, and flesh while at the same time, Abijah would have dozens of prostitutes sent to his castle where he would sexually abuse them and have bastard children as a result. To that end, he would kill dozens of his own children, including their mothers, to the point their skeletons lie under a dungeon beneath his castle.

Blue Eye Samurai[]

When Shindo got word that a mysterious samurai was coming to kill Fowler, Fowler told him too simply have an elite group of assassins called the Four Fangs deal with it, because he didn't feel like having to kill this person himself or risk them getting in the way of his plans. A few days later Shindo came to talk to Fowler while he was making an ink painting, and mentioned how the Four Fangs had not yet confirmed their success, something Fowler thought was inconsequential. The white man wanted to move onto other plans and grew annoyed with his ally, before destroying his ink painting in a fit of anger, ranting about how much he hated Japan.

A few days later, Fowler and Shindo were informed of the deaths and failure of the Four Fangs, and Fowler murdered the messenger in a fit of rage. He told Shindo to deal with the samurai himself, which the lord agreed to do after some convincing. However, he failed and lost a hand in the process, returning to Fowler's tower a few days later and warning him of the skill of their new enemy, who he had discovered was named Mizu.

Shindo had Taigen, and ally of Muzi's, kidnapped and tortured, which Fowler watched but found boring. With nothing better to do, he visited a Christian chapel that had been built for him upon his arrival. Although he admitted he wasn't religious, he told God that if he was able to conquer Japan, he would see it as a sign that Heaven was with him and bring missionaries from Europe over.

A few days later, Fowler found himself entertaining a minister named Chiba and his courtier. After some persuasion, he was able to convince Chiba to have various dissatisfied nobles give troops to his coup against the Shogun. During the meeting, Shindo realized that the Muzi had entered his fortress, but Fowler was sure that he wouldn't be able to make it through the traps. He was proved wrong when the Muzi entered their meeting and killed Chiba's courtier. Fowler quickly realized that she was half-white, probably the child of him or one of his allies. He tried to kill her, breaking her sword with his gun and physically overpowering her. However, she escaped by jumping out the window, after which Fowler dismissed her as dead or irrelevant.

Once they had built up an army, Fowler and Shindo set off towards Edo to conquer it, kill the shogun, and take over the country. During the journey, Shindo booked them stays at various brothels where they had various unusual sexual experiences, many of which involved violence at Fowler's request. During their trip, Shindo continuously asked Fowler where the guns were coming from, but Fowler refused to give them an answer. Around this time, Chiba made an attempt to find Fowler's rifles and failed. Fowler revealed to Shindo that he had smuggled them in as piano legs shortly thereafter. He then showed their power by using them to kill Chiba and several other prisoners from a hundred feet away.

Fowler and his army soon arrived in Edo and, using their rifles, blasted their way through the defenses to the palace, easily defeating the guards who were armed only with katanas and bows. With the help of Shindo, who was operating on the inside, Fowler ended up on the inner grounds, where he confronted Shogun Ito and his family. Shogun Ito challenged Fowler to a duel, and Fowler responded by shooting him. However, before he could kill the rest of the family, Fowler was ambushed by Mizu, who knocked his gun out of his hand. The two battled around the palace, eventually starting a city-wide fire. Mizu proved victorious, but Fowler convinced her to spare him, it would be impossible for her to find Skellington and Routley, who were in London, without a white man who spoke Japanese.

Mizu took Fowler prisoner and put him in the brig of the ship she took to England.
