Abu Hakim Al Badi is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders episode "The Matchmaker". Al Badi is an Iraqi terrorist operating a cell out to target Tom Wilson, America's ambassador to Turkey and a sworn enemy of Al Badi's operations.
He was portrayed by Nick Massouh.
Biography[]
Al Badi was actively involved in a terrorist network with chapters all across his home country, primarily committing bombings of mosques and churches. When Ambassador Wilson ordered the U.S. Air Force to commit an air strike in Ramadi, Al Badi's younger brother Ahmed was killed, so he swore revenge on Wilson. He prepared with accomplices a terrorist bombing at the American consulate in Istanbul when Wilson was planning to negotiate a treaty and alliance between Turkey and Iraq. Al Badi needed a proxy and political embarrassment, so he planned to use an American teenage girl as the bomber, hoping to kidnap and brainwash her.
A girl named Julie Allen was first lured through an online ruse to Istanbul, then held captive and spoonfed lies to indoctrinate her into the network. Allen fought back and eventually escaped, resulting in his accomplices shooting her in her head and killing her on a public street. Emma Peters was also snatched as a backup plan; she was lured to Antalya under false pretenses of needing to see her boyfriend Emir, only to be kidnapped by human and arms trafficker Marko Bashir and delivered directly to Al Badi.
Al Badi pretends to be a sympathetic ear to Emma's confusion, saying Emir was "important" and his network was "protecting" him and Emma. He became more hostile when he found out Emma called her parents before she was kidnapped, and when Bashir was arrested. His accomplice, retired British federal agent and securities advisor Marion Codwell, is then sent in for the most aggressive brainwashing, lying to Emma without releasing her that Emir wants to marry her, then later American military killed him to cover up war crime. Emma wanted revenge, so Al Abdi dressed her in formal wear and strapped her to a suicide bomb. She was stopped by IRT, who convinced her to surrender once Emir was shown to be alive and terrified for her safety after she disappeared.
As Emma remembered all details of where she was kept, Al Badi, Codwell, and their accomplices were all arrested and incarcerated for life.
