The Abyss is a dark and mysterious world in Paladins. It's an alternate dimension filled with massive crumbling buildings and seas composed of souls, among these ruins, live countless horrific and destructive Abyssal monsters, from smaller grunts to powerful Abyssal Lords, all with sinister goals of ruling and destroying the Realm.

The group was first introduced alongside Androxus when he released on March 11th, 2016, though the group was only explicitly introduced and named when Seris released on April 19th, 2017.

Official Bio[]

Fields of Strife[]

"The Domain of the Abyssal Lord Raum. Souls suffer endless battle, only to be broken again and again by the Rage of the Abyss himself. These fields hunger for souls who have close enough to the Abyss to have crossed through it. The Hand of Justice is one who has heretofor escaped such a fate."

Seas of Despair[]

"A grim ship sails forth on a black horizon, buffeted by waves of lost souls in anguish. The Seas of Despair belong to the Abyssal Admiral Dredge, and its cold dark depths mirror that of his own wretched heart."

The Rift[]

"An infernal gate between the Realm and the Abyss. It first emerged from the ruins of Seris, but has since been untethered. The rift now appears throughout the realm at the behest of an unseen force.

Biography[]

The origins of the Abyss are unknown, though the dimension has existed for at least several centuries, with the earliest recorded mention of them being from tales of Marauder's Port, of how long, long ago in ancient times, the island was once home to a group of Abyssal Cultists that worshipped the Abyssal Kraken, Dredge. Though the cultists would mysteriously disappear, with those remaining on the island quickly leaving in fear of living among the cursed ruins, leading to the island's modern usage as a hotspot for pirates.

While the Abyss largely remained under the radar throughout the Realm's golden age, it began to become more active approaching the end of this peace, seemingly managing to send several powerful entities into the Realm, many ended up being encountered by Corvus, while at least one was encountered by Androxus and Lex, with the entity deceitfully claiming itself to be a goddess, before it was seemingly slain by Androxus, with the whole event leading to him becoming cursed with an endless hunger for souls.

At some point following Corvus' many encounters, the Magistrate was made aware of an Abyssal portal within the village of Seris. Corvus was assigned to the matter, and for some reason decided the only option to prevent a catastrophe from occurring, was to offer the Abyss a sacrifice in the hopes of appeasing it. For some reason, Corvus decided a girl named Abby was to be the sacrifice, much to the opposition of her sister, Sarah, however, being a regular girl, Sarah couldn't defeat the Magistrate's forces, and Abby was taken off to be sacrificed, Corvus offering Sarah a lock of sister's hair as a memento.

As the sacrifice began, it quickly became apparent that the Abyss didn't hunger for a soul to consume, but for a body to possess. Abyssal Lord Seris emerged from the portal and destroyed the entire village in a massive explosion. Only three individuals are known to have survived: Corvus, who was protected by an unknown force, Abby, the sacrificial girl now possesses by Seris as the Oracle of the Abyss, and Sarah, Abby's sister who retreated to a church of the Eternal Pyre, praying for the strength to fight the Abyss, which the Pyre granted her. Following this, Seris began appearing here and there throughout the Realm, shifting events towards the end goal of ruling the Realm.

Some time later, the Magistrate and Resistance had just finished a battle at Warder's Watch, with the Resistance having emerged victorious and left the battle with a pair of Warder gauntlets. Their victory was short lived, as the power of the gauntlets attracted Judd Roberts, also known as Admiral Dredge, the most feared pirate of the Eight Oceans, who easily stole the treasure from them with his unrivaled skill on the open water. However, a Warder Dragon sensed Judd in possession of the gauntlets and deemed him unworthy of carrying them, attacking the pirate and sending him down to what should've been his watery grave. But, the pirate's legacy wasn't over yet, as the Abyssal Kraken, Dredge, emerged from the depths and took control of Judd, bringing the pirate and his ship back to the world of the living as the Admiral of the Abyss. Dredge would easily reclaim the gauntlets... only to lose them soon after to Imani.

Following this, both the Magistrate and Resistance began to grow desperate in the hopes of defeating the other, leading both groups deep into the Shattered Desert to battle over shards of the moon, with Io ultimately attacking Corvus and forcing him and the Magistrate to retreat. The experience had shaken Corvus greatly, as he believed the Resistance had managed to convince Io and Jenos to join them in the Crystal War, leading Corvus to assume they would soon easily destroy the Magistrate.

But then, as if on cue, Seris appeared to Corvus and offered him a deal: an Abyssal Lord, reared in the eternal conflict of the Abyss, no one would see it coming, none could hope to stand against it, and the best part, it would be entirely under the Magistrate's control. Under normal circumstances, Corvus surely would've realized this was far too good to be true, but having recently just barely escaped with his life, coupled with his desperation to protect the Magistrate, led to Corvus accepting this deal, summoning Raum, Rage of the Abyss, into the Realm. While Raum was indeed exactly how Seris had described him, Raum would never let anyone control him, and instantly left to cause chaos and destruction throughout the Realm, forcing both the Magistrate and Resistance to drop everything and fight the beast, while Corvus was exiled from the Magistrate for allowing this to happen.

While the Abyss has been suspiciously quiet following the tigron warrior Tiberius battling Raum to a draw and temporarily halting his rampage, as well as the chaos of Yagorath, the monsters seem to be preparing for another assault on the Realm, with the recent transformation of Lillith, seemingly serving as another potential entryway for the Abyss to enter the Realm.

Nyx existed as a Pyre Lord, battling against the Abyss alongside Azaan. The Pyre saw its path as absolute. Anyone who got in the way would be disposed of. The Pyre's ideology aggravated Nyx, however. This inkling was nourished by the entity that would become known as Seris, who soon opened a portal for Nyx to travel to the Abyss. There she wrecked havoc, killing an Abyssal Lord and taking their throne instead. She became known as the Queen of the Abyss.

After the Dawnforge was summoned by Azaan, Nyx seiged it for herself, trapping Azaan to watch her enact her plan.

A thief, Caspian, had stolen an Abyssal artifact from the Magistrate. He then sold it to Lillith who used it alongside Seris to perform a ritual to summon Nyx into the realm.

Members[]

  • Raum - Reared in the eternal conflict of the Abyss, Raum is one of the most feared and deadly of the Abyssal Lords, having fought and triumphed over every entity within the Fields of Strife, all tremble at the mere mention of his name.
  • Seris - A massive Abyssal Dragon possessing the body of Abby, a combination of its immense destructive power, capability to see the past and potential futures, ability to step into other dimensions, and deceptive nature results in Seris being one of the most dangerous Abyssal Lord or entity currently known, perhaps even more so than Raum.
  • Dredge - Worshipped in ancient times, the Abyssal Kraken would go under the radar for centuries until it reemerged to take control of Judd Roberts.
  • Androxus - Once one of the most dedicated of the Tribunal judges, following his curse by the Abyss, Androxus had no choice but to abandon his duties to satiate himself, quickly rising to the top of the Realm's most wanted list. Though whether or not Androxus is aware of his connection to the Abyss remains unclear.
  • Lillith - Originally a Border Lord in the far off homeland of House Aico, Lillith was mortally wounded in a Resistance led border incursion. However, as she crawled away from the battlefield, curing the Resistance, the Abyss reached out and offered Lillith a gift, restoring her into an Abyssal vampire. Now, she rules from her dark corners of the Realm, making deals related to life and death with those that dare associate with her.
  • Nyx - Initially a Pyre Lord who worked alongside Azaan, Nyx grew tired of the Pyre's absolute rule. She was convinced by Seris to come to the Abyss to rule instead. Nyx wrecked havoc in the Abyss, killing an Abyssal Lord and taking their place. She took the title of Queen of The Abyss. Lillith and Seris worked to summon Nyx to the Realm so she could continue their quest for domination.
