~ Brubeck grooming one of his victims |
Adam Brubeck is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Producer's Backend". He is a movie producer who uses his power and influence to sexually abuse the teenage girls who appear in his films, one of whom he killed.
He was portrayed by Brian d'Arcy James, who also portrayed King George III in the original off-Broadway production of Hamilton.
Early life[]
Brubeck produced a series of successful teen comedy and musical films starring the latest "It girls" in Hollywood, all of them under 18. He "discovered" several of his actresses when they were barely in their teens, and manipulated them into having sex with him, threatening to destroy their careers if they told anyone.
One of Brubeck's starlets was Tensley Evans, whom he began abusing when she was 14, while also passing her around to his friends to abuse, as if she were a party favor. He also manipulated her fame-hungry mother, Donna, into letting him abuse her whenever he wanted by promising to make her daughter a star. Tensley did indeed become world famous, but the trauma of Brubeck's abuse drove her to numb her pain with drugs and alcohol, becoming an addict by the time she was 20. Eventually, she became better known for getting arrested than for her movies.
Brubeck's abuse of young girls was an open secret in Hollywood, but he always managed to stay out of legal trouble thanks to his lawyer and fixer Dennis George, who would bribe or threaten Brubeck's victims into silence. (Brubeck returned the favor by keeping silent about the male teenage actors George regularly abused.)
Brubeck nearly got arrested when he accidentally killed a young actress, Amber Forbes, by holding her head underwater in his pool while she performed oral sex on him; he pushed down too hard, and she drowned. Once again, however, George made the scandal go away, this time by claiming Amber had fallen in the pool after drinking too much.
In "Producer's Backend"[]
When Tensley is arrested for drunk driving, she falsely accuses the arresting officer, Nick Amaro, of sexually assaulting her. Amaro, a former detective with the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, proves his innocence with the dash camera footage of the arrest, so Tensley changes her story and says that she was abused by the head of the last rehab clinic she attended. The doctor proves his innocence, as well, and tells SVU Detectives Amanda Rollins and Dominick Carisi Jr. that Tensley had performed oral sex on a 15-year-old boy who was also a patient in the clinic during her stay.
The detectives arrest Tensley for statutory rape, and have her examined by a psychiatrist, who tells them that Tensley was likely sexually abused herself. Sergeant Olivia Benson asks Tensley who really abused her, and she reluctantly replies that Brubeck had forced her to have sex with him, but that it was "just part of the business".
Rollins and Carisi question Brubeck, who dismisses Tensley as a liar and a junkie. Along with the rest of the SVU team, they find several other actresses who claim that Brubeck coerced them into sex when they were adolescents, but they hit a dead end when they find that all the rapes were committed in states where the age of consent is 16. Their luck changes, however, when they question Maude Peterson, who says that Brubeck cast her in one of his films and then lured her to Canada, where he raped her; she says that the movie was never made, which means that Brubeck is guilty of transporting a minor across state lines for sexual purposes.
The detectives arrest Brubeck, and Benson interrogates him. He claims that he broke no law by having sex with Maude because the age of consent in Canada is 16, and that he took her to Canada for a legitimate movie that just never got off the ground. In response, Benson shows Brubeck the script that he registered for the film - which contains only the words, "All work and no play make Adam a dull boy." She then tells him that, since he clearly never intended to make a film and only used it as an excuse to move Maude across state lines for sex, he is guilty of rape and child sex trafficking. She then opens the interrogation room door for several federal agents, who take Brubeck into custody. Brubeck is then given a long federal prison sentence for several counts of rape, statutory rape, and child sex trafficking.
Trivia[]
- Brubeck is inspired by actor and director Bryan Singer, who has been accused of sexually assaulting several teenage boys.
