My name is Aden Syed. I hold in my hand a statement, a confession I'm being pressured to read. I've been told there are lives depending on it. Yusef, and I am speaking directly to you now. Do you not know me? Do you really think I would put a woman and child above my values and principles? Confessions, apologies, they're not for me.
~ Aden Syed when he refuses to do the confession for Yusef Ahmed.

Aden Syed, also known as the Saw Man, is the overarching antagonist of the S.W.A.T. episode "Monster". He was a warlord who was behind committing horrible crimes during the civil war in Somalia 25 years ago. Because of the crimes, many people in Somalia emigrated from the country. Since losing the war, Syed, moved to California, married, and had a son while hiding from his past.

Biography[]

Aden Syed was a warlord during the war in Somalia. He built his military through child soldiers and was stated to have been responsible for thousands of deaths. Syed would train his child soldiers to be ruthless as they pillaged people's homes. To recruit child soldiers, Syed would allow his men to hold a family hostage and gave the child to murder their parents, particularly their mother, to be a part of his army. If the child did not kill their mother, then the men would rape the mother in front of them before killing both of them. Syed's evil acts led to many children choosing to kill their mothers to not dishonor them while they were also physically scarred to be part of Syed's army. Syed also enjoyed sawing his victims by cutting them with a saw earning him the name the Saw Man. It was stated that Syed's lost the war and many people fled from Somalia and some migrated to America. Hondo was also in the war and saw the atrocities committed by Syed and his army. Despite losing the war, Syed manages to evade the International Criminal Court and left Somalia to migrate to America.

After migrating to America, Syed changes his identity to Bashir and marries a woman named Verna. The two has a son named Max. Unbeknownst to his wife, Verna, Syed would hide his true identity and is able to get along with her and their son. However, many people in the Somalian community are still horrified and angry at Syed for his evil actions during the war.

While working his job in private transportation, Syed picks up a man named El Monte. While having a conversation in his car, El Monte is able to find the true identity of Syed and El Monte demands to leave the car. Syed decides to lock the car doors to keep El Monte inside to kill him with his gun. When the car crashed, Syed ran away from El Monte until El Monte grabs him as a hostage with Syed's gun. After S.W.A.T. arrest both men, Syed was on his way to be transported by the International Criminal Court until a group of men led by Yusef Ahmed led an ambush on the vehicle transporting Syed. Syed is taken into protective custody by Hondo and Tan as the S.W.A.T. LAPD runs an investigation into the attempted assassination of Syed. While Syed was placed in a building under surveillance by Hondo and Tan, Syed notes Hondo's resentment and anger towards him. Syed lies to Hondo saying that the American media is slandering him. During the incident, Syed's family are captured and held hostage by Yusef Ahmed and his men. They demand that Syed read his confession letter about the crimes he committed in Somalia so that it can be publicized on all major media networks across the world. Syed said that he would not read the confession because he thinks that Yusuf and his men would murder his wife and son even if he followed through on their demands.

After Hondo gets Tan and Syed food to eat, Hondo demands that Syed help them identify the men who captured his wife and son. Syed demands to know from Hondo about what he saw in Somalia. Hondo answers Syed's demands and Syed assist Hondo with identifying one of the men as Yusef. Syed admits that Yusef was one of the people he taught during the war to be ruthless. Hondo hands Syed the paper to read the confession. As Hondo records the video of Syed's confession, Syed says on the video that he would not betray his convictions for his wife and son while ripping the paper leading to Hondo to snap at him and almost assaulting him. Syed express enjoyment in seeing Hondo enraged at him to prove his own point that Hondo is also a monster. Despite not reading the letter, Syed's family are rescued by the LAPD S.W.A.T. unit. While being transported by S.W.A.T. and the ICC to a helicopter, Syed scoffs at Hondo when Hondo tries to him that good people are able to not allow the monster in themselves to take over. Verna and Max appear to see Syed leave with the ICC. Verna says that she will not miss him after finding out the truth about him. Syed calls out to Max, but Max does not answer back. Verna says that Max also did not want to come to see him. Verna and Max leaves while Syed silently approach the helicopter with the ICC.
