Lionel wants this.
~ Irving before breaking Reginald's legs.

Admin T. Irving (often shortened to just Irving) is a major character in Daniel Mullins' connecting series. He's the secondary antagonist of The Hex and a secret character in Inscryption. He is Lionel Snill's assistant in the development of his games at Gameworks and was involved with the development of Inscryption.

Personality[]

Irving is outwardly formal to most of the characters throughout the game. When speaking to Bryce, he has a demanding tone and overall appears intimidating. Irving has an almost perverted obsession with fighting, constantly training as his office is essentially just a training room. He's also the one to teach most characters (specifically Chef Bryce and Chandrelle Stormblaze) how to fight. When Irving notices Bryce getting the hang of his training, he orders Bryce to score a near-impossible combo. Yet as Bryce fails, Irving begins to start mindlessly punching and kicking at Bryce, losing sense of his surroundings until Bryce punches him back in which he ultimately forgets the fact he was the one hitting Bryce first because of the headrush he got from seeing Bryce fight. This same scenario also displays Irving's low tolerance for those who act against him or disobey orders.

Irving constantly abuses his authority over the characters to beat them up and abuse them. And despite talking against Jeremiah for killing innocent NPCs in the Gameworks, Irving does everything but kill his NPCs, beating Captain Barnay until he's on the floor bleeding just to get ahead in his plans and while Barnay does survive this he is greatly traumatized. Irving also has little regard for the consequences of how he abuses others, valuing his own authority more than the orders given to him by Lionel as instead of trying to get Bryce into Combat Arena X2 when he retaliates, he decides to coerce Bryce into punching his own grandmother so that he is no longer allowed in any game. He also breaks Reggie's legs and "loses" his files for not obeying him, despite Lionel wanting Reggie's files to be preserved. He's still apparently much kinder to the people he works for, or at least appeals to them more as Lionel is shown to have respect for him. He's also less cruel to certain characters than others, as it's implied his relationship with the Scrybes was much more mutual than how he treated Lionel's characters as he goes out of his way to help them at certain points when requested even if it's implied he's usually a last resort due to his role in Inscryption. Further enforcing his double-standards, he does not care about the Scrybes torturing and mutilating one of their subjects so that Irving may replace them, and it's more than likely that the sole reason Irving cares when an NPC dies is because of how expensive they are for him to create.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Not much is known about Irving's past aside from when one of the game's overarching antagonists Lionel Snill attempted to get into game development, Irving came with the Gameworks package; a software downloaded to help Lionel make his games created by the Karnoffel Code. While initially hesitant, Irving became a great help to Lionel while he developed his games.

Root Beer Tender[]

Root Beer Tender was a game developed by Lionel which was shutdown in order to make Lionel seem more like a prodigy for his more polished game, Super Weasel Kid. Despite Lionel telling Irving that he wanted to preserve Reggie's files due to particularly liking him, Irving personally pays Reggie a visit and after Reggie's failure to comply, Irving breaks his legs and shuts down the game with force. Irving then loses Reggie's files, despite claiming he'd be moved to another game.

Combat Arena X[]

Irving Fight

Irving is first seen in Bryce's flashback.

After Lionel buys the rights to Cooking Granny, Irving forces Bryce to join the roster of an up and coming game by Lionel, Combat Arena X. He makes Bryce train his combat skills under cruel conditions, beating him into getting better. As Bryce trains more and more he becomes too OP and is placed back in Cooking Granny. Irving visits Bryce during a session of the game where he informs Bryce that he'll be moved into the sequel, Combat Arena X 2. After Bryce's refusal to be moved, Irving tricks him into punching Granny by a misinput, putting Bryce out of business for good.

Secrets of Legendaria[]

Irving enters Secrets of Legendaria after finding out its protagonist and deuteragonist, Chandrelle and Lazarus, are trying to ruin the game in order to stop being used by GameWorks. He beats Captain Barnay to near-death and takes on his appearance, manipulating the two onto his boat where he attempts to get the game back on track. Chandrelle and Lazarus find out despite this, and commence in a battle where Irving's intentions shift towards killing them instead. He drives their boat into the fog so that no one else can see their battle, but it's soon driven out by Reginald's janitor, Jeremiah. Who crashes the boat into what was supposed to be the game's third boss before it was replaced by Irving. Irving is forced to leave as a result of this, but he still manages to punish the two once the game is finally put out of business due to its buggy state and Chandrelle's compliance to help Vallamir destroy the game's world. Irving sends Lazarus to a notoriously dangerous game, Vicious Galaxy. Seeing Chandrelle as requiring a more creative punishment for coming up with the plan in the first place, he traps Vallamir in her head.

Vicious Galaxy[]

In Vicious Galaxy, Jeremiah leads Jay, Junior, and Lazarus into an alien base. However, they are soon stopped by Irving who reveals that the alien base was actually a facade for the Gameworks. As Jeremiah fails to silence Irving, he scolds the player for killing all the NPCs they killed in the Gameworks of which prevents the player from shooting him as Lazarus cannot attack without the player's input, much to Jeremiah's panicked confusion. Meanwhile Weasel Kid sets off a bomb in the building. Irving hears Weasel Kid contact Lazarus over a radio, and questions who Lazarus is speaking to before the bomb sets off. Irving's office is destroyed, and he goes missing after this. Once Lazarus rejoins Jeremiah and fights Sado, Irving is found speaking to Lionel through a gateway to the real world about the Artifact required for the characters to enter the real world using a portal known as The Hex. Likely notifying him that it had been stolen by Lazarus.

Six Pint Inn and Death[]

Irving Inn Scene

Irving confronts Lazarus.

Once nearly all the events that led up to the game's main plot are revealed, Irving finally visits the Six Pint Inn in attempt to arrest Lazarus. After an argument with Reggie and the rest of the bar's patrons, Lazarus finally comes out of hiding as he aims a gun at Irving. Irving degrades him and threatens him not to kill him as Chandrelle encourages Lazarus to shoot him. Irving continues to talk Lazarus down as he is reminded of his attack on the Gameworks in Vicious Galaxy. This time, Irving's speech fails. Lazarus shoots Irving in the chest, as he bleeds out. Reginald then reveals that this was the supposed murder he had received a call for which caused panic in the inn to begin with, and will ask the player if they're satisfied with this conclusion. Should the player say yes, the game ends here. Should the player say no however, the game will continue. Once this question is answered, Irving will fall to the floor now dead. Chandrelle exclaims she will not miss him, Bryce remarks that he at least taught him how to fight.

Walk[]

Irving guides the player in certain sections of Walk where he forces one of the game's characters Rebecha to replace Chandrelle in the Secrets of Legendaria segment. He also shows up in the Combat Arena X section where he bans Steambot Willie at the end for being too OP. It is in this part of the game where the player gets to play through Root Beer Tender and see what Irving did to Reginald.

Inscryption[]

Irving was present during the development of Inscryption. This was likely some time before his death. He was likely a major part in the game's development, and seemed to serve as direct contact between the Scrybes as he'd help curate the game to their liking as long as they kept in line.

Inscryption ARG[]

Before the Pike Mage; Amber, Magnificus had another mage named "James Cobb" whom for his trial had his body parts morphed. Despite this, he enjoyed his trial so Magnificus asked Irving to have him replaced. Irving agreed to do so if Magnificus could find a new place in the game to put him, noting that NPC creation isn't cheap. Magnificus agreed to do so, leaving James to P03. With this, Irving developed the Pike Mage for Magnificus.

Quotes[]

YES! I'm HYPED!
~ Irving during Bryce's training.
Use your ultimate! Come on. I told you how. Activate it!
~ Irving gaslighting Bryce after asking him to perform a 1000 combo.
Did you just hit ME? You're in my world now. Get out there and fight.
~ Irving after beating up Bryce.
Great pie, Granny. Although, Bryce it was a little overcooked. You always did make a better fighter than a cook.
~ Irving paying Bryce and his Granny a visit.
Nice stance. Just like I taught you. But you remember the last time you tried hitting me right? That's right. You remember that bad idea. Why don't you lower those fists?
~ Irving tricking Bryce into punching Granny.
Well... You won't be fighting in Combat Arena. Striking an innocent NPC... You won't be allowed in ANY game. What a shame. Oh... I almost forgot to do it. K.O.!
~ Irving after fooling Bryce into punching Granny.
Just a spot o' the sea sickness.
~ Irving impersonating Captain Barnay in response to Chandrelle's suspicions.
Ahoy. I am Captain Barnay. The eastern winds- hehe The eastern winds brought- hehehe Are you serious, Chandrelle? You didn't recognize me? This turn-based combat has made you soft. I liked you better as a fighter. But orders are orders. You'll either stay as the heroin of time for all future sequels... Or I'll sink you myself.
~ Irving revealing himself to Chandrelle.
Chandrelle: So you show up and beat me while everyone is watching? That's an even better way to sabotage this game!
Irving: AHAHA! Who's watching? I steered this vessel into thick fog for more than just dramatic effect.
Lazarus: They can't see us?
Irving: I'm not only going to beat you... You'll be thrown overboard and replaced with someone more... compliant.
~ Irving at the start of his battle.
Chandrelle... I remember in Combat Arena the best matches were the ones where you ran out of mana. Seeing you bring out those fists got me HYPED! Show me your fight stance. Now.
~ Irving forcing Chandrelle to use Combat Arena X mechanics in Secrets of Legendaria.
Do you need some help? Here, let me show you.
~ Irving sarcastically offering Chandrelle a warm-up in their battle.
Heheh, doesn't it feel good? I must've done a good job training you. You haven't forgotten a thing.
~ Irving commenting on Chandrelle's skills during their battle.
That is a major buzzkill. I can't be seen here. So farewell Chandrelle. Heh. Say hi to Vallamir for me.
~ Irving after their battle is interrupted by Jeremiah.
Irving: Secrets of Legendaria is cancelled. Congratulations. That's a lot of NPC's out of work. A lot of slimes to deal with. Are you satisfied?
Chandrelle: Reasonably, yes.
Irving: Lazarus?
Lazarus: I... I'm not sure.
Irving: Oh yeah? Well you're reassigned to Vicious Galaxy. Let that sink in.
Lazarus: That's- I've heard bad things about-
Irving: You were merely an accomplice. The Bureau is going easy on you. So get out of here, you've got some aliens to kill.
Lazarus: I- Chandrelle, I regret this-
~ Irving punishes Lazarus.
Irving: As for you, you're out. No more reassignments.
Chandrelle: Fine by me. I'm done being someone's pawn. I'll take the void.
Irving: You know, we used to think that was punishment enough... But after your pal Bryce, and now you, we have decided to revise that theory. Gotta dicincentivize others of course. So they asked me to get creative with you.
Chandrelle: W- what?
Irving: Vallamir!
Vallamir: Hey girl. Heh, been a while since I've seen you decompressed.
Chandrelle: What is this?
Irving: We could hardly find another game for a niche character like Vallamir. So we thought he could tag along with you. In your skull.
Vallamir: Heheh, we're going to be, heh, roommates-
Chandrelle: No, no, n-
Irving: Yes.
~ Irving punishes Chandrelle.
Irving: You never were much for carpentry.
Bryce: Amen.
Irving: Bryce? Wow. You really have hit rock bottom. Do you work here?
~ Irving meeting Bryce again after visiting the Six Pint Inn to arrest Lazarus.
Irving: Speak of the devil. And we have been speaking a lot. ...What have you got there? A gun? I thought you were a sworn knight. Oh, that's right. Your pal Chandrelle put an end to that.
Chandrelle: Shoot him Lazarus-
Irving: HA! You should think that one through first, spacemarine.
Lazarus: Oh yeah?
Irving: Yeah. Vicious Galaxy was a light punishment compared to the one you'd get for harming me. They will tear you apart byte by byte. Man, you'll wish you were still in Vicious Galaxy. So what's it gonna be, pal?
~ Irving's last words before his demise.
Stop right there criminal scum. The damage you've caused... So many good NPC's lost. What for? Revenge? I thought you above that, Jeremiah.
~ Irving at the end of "Vicious Galaxy."
...OH! Wow. You actually tricked a Player... into helping you... With this cheap facade? (...) You mean to tell me you had no idea what was going on? (...) I'm talking to you. This isn't Vicious Galaxy, you moron. These brigands have fooled you into striking The Gameworks... The very facility that produces the games that you so cherish. Boy, you sure helped them kill a lot of game characters. 87 Groondas, 102 Moglees, a handful of Steambots. All just doing their job. And for what? You'll have to ask them.
~ Irving breaking the fourth wall to scold the player while being held at gunpoint in The Gameworks.
Hey there. I'm the Gameworks Assistant but you can call me Irving. Looks like you need a little help adding enemies to your game? I've got you covered, pal.
~ Irving introduces himself in Walk.
Banned. Sorry, pal.
~ Irving after removing Steambot Willie from Combat Arena X for performing its ultimate on him.
Irving: It's closing time, Reginald.
Reginald: Say, that can't be. it's not even dark yet.
Irving: It's closing time forever. Lionel is releasing Super Weasel Kid. He can't have some root beer game marring his reputation.
Reginald: You must be mistaken, Lionel loves root beer. And he loves me.
Irving: Lionel wants this.
Reginald: I'm not leaving.

Irving: Very well.

~ Irving's conversation with Reggie before he shuts down Root Beer Tender and breaks Reggie's legs, leading to the game's events.

Trivia[]

  • Despite not being fought in Combat Arena X, he is the final boss to use mechanics from said game.
  • By using the mimic charm on Irving during his battle, the names of his abilities make out the sentence: "Stealing my moves are you, Chandrelle?" One of the abilities do absolutely nothing as to spite Chandrelle.
  • The most recent Adbot ARG made his death more ambiguous when Adbot claimed that you can still contact him by his "usual means."
