You idiotic fool! Go get him and bring him back to me! Dead or alive!
~ Admiral Razorbeard threatening his second-in-command, Spyglass Pirate.
Now you're alone for all eternity! Ha! Ha! Ha!
~ Admiral Razorbeard cruelly taunting Rayman after seemingly killing him and Globox, unaware that they're still alive.

Admiral Razorbeard, also known simply as Razorbeard, is the main antagonist of Rayman 2: The Great Escape and the GBA version of Rayman 3. He is the tyrannical leader of the Robo-Pirates who invaded Rayman's world and enslaved the inhabitants. He spends most of the game seated in his flagship and base of operations, the airship Buccaneer.

He was voiced by Ken Starcevic, who also played André in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc.

Appearance[]

Admiral Razorbeard is a short, stocky robot pirate captain with a large, jagged metal beard bolted to his face, the source of his namesake. He also has long, spiky metal "hair" jutting out from both sides of his head, and a comically massive captain's hat as tall as he is, bearing the Robo-Pirate emblem. He also wears a blue and black striped shirt and red-and-white striped trousers with a gold skull buckle on his belt. He has a traditional pirate's peg leg for his left foot.

Personality[]

Razorbeard is a power-hungry and cold blooded tyrant. He desires to conquer worlds and force them into slavery under him, going as far as to destroy them should he come short of it. Razorbeard further displays his greed and lack of humanity by indiscriminately forcing others to mine treasure for him. Despite his mutual animosity towards Rayman, Razorbeard’s hatefulness extends far beyond him. He is also extremely arrogant and doesn’t care at all about his henchmen: demonstrating how little he thinks of them by often berating and executing them for even minor failures purely out of cruelty. He sometimes does this to them even if it wasn’t their fault, also displaying his pettiness. Razorbeard further shows his cruelty after nearly killing both Rayman and Globox, making a heartless remark under the impression he succeeded, but while being unaware that they are still alive.

Biography[]

Rayman 2: The Great Escape[]

Razorbeard

Admiral Razorbeard

At the very start of the game, Rayman himself is imprisoned and has to escape from the pirates and then begins finding and rescuing all of his other friends. Eventually, Rayman learns that Razorbeard can be defeated by obtaining the four elemental masks and summoning the god Polokus. Admiral Razorbeard spends the entire game in the captain's quarters of his ship, where he is warned by his assistant of Rayman's heroic acts and gives orders to stop him at all costs and to get the masks before he does.

Later in the game, Razorbeard is seen purchasing a giant robot called the "Grolgoth" from an independent warmonger, voicing his intent to kill Rayman with it. Sure enough, this robot makes its appearance at the end of the game when Rayman launches himself up to Razorbeard's ship and is confronted by his mech. The platform they are fighting on soon breaks and they fall into the reactor core of the ship, where the robot and ship are destroyed, but Razorbeard himself escapes in a flying saucer.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc[]

Razorbeard's Easter Egg

Admiral Razorbeard appears as an Easter Egg the sequel to Rayman 2: The Great Escape. He, along with the other Robo-Pirates, are found in a secret chamber, hidden inside of a gigantic boiler in the Hoodlum Headquarters. The Robo-Pirates' positions behind a long table resembles that of Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, The Last Supper, with Razorbeard in the place of Jesus. It is revealed that they are all captured and disabled by the Hoodlums.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc (Game Boy Advance)[]

Admiral Razorbeard appears again as the secondary antagonist and final boss (once again using the Grolgoth) in the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. It is revealed that Razorbeard is hiding somewhere in the Glade of Dreams, with a small group of surviving Robo-Pirates. When he learns that Globox had swallowed André, he decides to capture Globox and harness André's power. He also got another Grolgoth which he tries to destroy Rayman again with, but failed.

Rayman: The Animated Series[]

Razobeard2

Razorbeard in Rayman: The Animated Series.

Admiral Razorbeard appears as the former main antagonist in the Rayman: The Animated Series episode "Lac-Mac Napping", the pilot episode of the series. However, his role is much smaller than in the games - Razorbeard works as a henchman of Rigatoni, the evil ringmaster of an intergalactic circus. Razorbeard captures strange creatures who are then forced to work as slaves in the circus. His physical appearance has also changed - Razorbeard now has a mouth under his beard and there is a symbol of crossed keys on his hat instead of the Robo-Pirate insignia. He is a human now, with a non-robotic voice that was provided by Carlos Alazraqui. He was also the only villain from the video games to appear in the TV series.

Other appearances[]

Admiral Razorbeard also appears as a playable character in Rayman M and Rayman Arena where his wife, Razorwife, is firstly introduced. His last appearance is in the racing game Rayman Kart where he is a playable character, too.

Trivia[]

  • Razorbeard's original name was "Razor Face".
  • According to the "Hands Down!" comics, his beard is made of steel.
  • Unlike the other versions, in the PS2 and PS1 versions Razorbeard is not seen escaping during the end credits, making his final fate, whether he survived the explosion of his ship or not, unclear (he would have very unlikely survived in the other versions where he is seen surviving, since the countdown for the self-destruction of the Grologoth was shockingly short, only 5 seconds).
