|Jafar says: Read my lips and come to grips with the reality!|
Adolf Hitler is the overarching antagonist of the book Refugee by Alan Gratz. He is overall what connects all the stories through his oppression of the Jewish people.
Albeit unseen he has an influence on the plot. Firstly he is the one that puts Josef's family on the run from the Nazis who kidnap Josef's father and later torture him. Not to mention this sends them on the St. Louis to escape oppression where they are met by Otto Schiendick who drives their family to destruction. In Isabel's story Hitler is brought up indirectly as the Nazis who held the ship away from Cuba had her grandfather as one of the personall. In Mahmoud's story he meets Josef's sister who had survived the holocaust caused by Hitler.
