Tonight I order that all Vikings living on this island be exterminated.
~ Æthelred II

Aethelred II is the overarching antagonist of Vikings: Valhalla.

He is the former King of England who arranged the St. Brice's day massacre. He is based off of the historical figure, Æthelred II, who served as the King of England from 978 to 1013 and again from 1014 to 1016.

Biography[]

Aethelred was constantly urged by his nobles that all Vikings living under Danelaw are threats to England. The nobles convince him that they need to come up with a plan to deal with the "Viking Problem."

On St. Brice's Day, Aethelred calls upon Sten Sigurdsson from the nearest Danelaw Viking settlement. When Sten and his men arrive, Aethelred invites them to feast. While they are feasting, Aethelred slowly reveals how Vikings are a threat to England but Sten and his men don't catch on quite yet.

Aethelred says that he wishes to "exterminate all Vikings from England and purify the field. Aethelred signals his soldiers to kill Sten and his men. The same night, he sends soldiers out to the Danelaw settlement and has them brutally murder every man, woman and child living on the settlement.

One year after this, Aethelred hears about the great Viking army that will come back to England to extract Revenge on him. Aethelred, who is already sick becomes more unnerved by this. He eventually collapses and is placed on his deathbed. His son Edmund starts praying in Latin for him to get better, but Emma of Normandy, Aethelred's wife comes and tells him to leave. Later Aethelred dies on his health problems, making Edmund the new King of England.

Personality[]

Aethelred is cold and violent, being a paranoid man who lapsed into a monster due to his nobles pressuring him into dealing with the Vikings. He is ruthless and when he wants something done, it's done without a problem.
