We keep Pokémon that have been targeted by Team Skull here... And we also try to support Pokémon that need a little extra protection.
~ Wicke talking about Aether Paradise.

The Aether Foundation are the main antagonists of the 2016 3DS video games Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon and their 2017 remakes Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon.

They are an organization who are known for taking care of hurt Pokémon in the Alola region. They are led by the organization's president, Lusamine, and the organization's branch chief, Faba.

In reality, they are an organization working with Team Skull who try to help Lusamine retrieve Cosmog from Lillie to open the Ultra Wormhole.

History[]

Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon[]

The Aether Foundation is first seen first seen in Diglett's Tunnel where they are seen with Diglett and Dugtrio. Shortly after this, near the Ruins of Life, the player meets Faba and an employee, who ask the the former to fight off 2 Team Skull grunts. After the player's match with Olivia, Faba takes the player and Hau to the Aether Paradise in the Hano Grand Resort.

In the Aether Foundation, Hau and the player meet Wicke, who introduces them to Aether Paradise. Wicke then introduces the player and Hau to the organization's president, Lusamine. After meeting Lusamine, an ultra wormhole opens up, revealing a Nihilego. The player fights off the Nihilego, where Lusamine talks about how she will find it again. The player and Hau are sent by Wicke to the next island for the next part of their Island Challenge.

After the second battle with Guzma, the player, Hau, and Acerola find out that Lillie has been taken away by Team Skull to the Aether Foundation, and the organization's true colors are revealed. Gladion appears, challenging the player to a Pokémon battle out of anger. After Gladion realizes the stupidity of what he just did, he takes the player to the boats in Malie city. The player is challenged in a fight with Nanu. After the fight, Hau appears, and the trio go to Aether Paradise.

In Aether Paradise, the player first goes through many employees in the docks, and makes it to the elevator. The player, Hau, and Gladion go to the main area, where they fight Faba, who takes them to the labs under the paradise. After finding information, the trio go back to the main area, where the fight employees and Faba once again. Faba gives a key to the trio to the next area, where they encounter many Team Skull grunts, and Guzma is fought once again.

In Lusamine's area, the player encounters the former, who is harassing Lillie. Lusamine then notices the player is here, and goes into her chamber. The player and Lillie go into the chamber, where they find many frozen Pokémon. Hau and Gladion appear, where it is revealed that Lillie, Gladion, and Lusamine are all a family. Lusamine uses Cosmog to open the Ultra Wormhole, causing an invasion of Ultra Beasts to start. Lusamine challenges the player to the battle. Whether the player wins or loses, Lusamine, along with Guzma go into the Ultra Wormhole. Cosmog is left as Cosmoem.

Wicke provides care to everyone, and the player and Lillie head to Poni Island to go to the Altar of the Sunne/Moone.

The player, Lillie, and Hapu go to the Altar of the Sunne, where Lillie and the player play the Sun and Moon Flute, turning Cosmoem into Solgaleo/Lunala. The player, Lillie, and Solgaleo/Lunala go into Ultra Space, where the find a traumatized Guzma. They then find Lusamine, who tells them that she will stay in Ultra Space forever. Lusamine then fuses with Nihilego, and challenges the player to a Pokémon battle. After defeat, Solgaleo/Lunala fires a beam at Lusamine, defeating and turning her back to normal.

At the end of the game, Lillie and Lusamine leave to Kanto to find a way to recover the latter.

Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon[]

The Aether Foundation's plans are altered in the remakes, as their goal in the game is to defeat the legendary Pokémon Necrozma. Lusamine tries to defeat Necrozma by going into the ultra wormhole along with Guzma, but they both miserably fail as seen once the player and Lillie get to the Altar of the Sunne/Moone.

Other Media[]

Pokémon Masters[]

The Aether Foundation first appear in Pokémon Masters in the Alola-themed chapter of the game's second storyline, with most of their members taking a firmly heroic role in the chapter. First being seen tending to various lost Pokémon, two grunts of the organization discuss a recent theft of data relating to Ultra Beasts and the wormholes they spawn from, while suspicions arise at large regarding another conspiracy from Team Rocket. As such, some members' suspicions grow from Faba's odd behavior and noting of their enemy's past crimes, detailing their fears of Team Rocket's trickery to their leader. Elsewhere, two other grunts' cleanup efforts are interrupted through a child's notice of a Pokémon within the ocean, their interests peaked after being told of its possible rarity. However, their aims of healing the world are muddied through their own greed and selfishness, noting of their plans to either sell the Pokémon or set it to work after recovering their target. This, alongside the discovery of gathered equipment in order to summon Ultra Beasts to their location, causes Mina to engage the devious duo. However, her attempts to defeat them with her Granbull are quickly shut down, leading the child as an unwilling informant for their schemes. However, just as the situation appears to be helpless, the rare Pokémon spotted by the girl, Tapu Fini, emerges from the ocean to guard Mina, leaving the agents helpless at both it and Hapu's Mudsdale defeat their allies. This causes the two members to retreat, hoping to regroup with more firepower for future engagement. As Faba's attempts to contact his allies are interrupted by Gladion and Lillie, he is dragged by the ear towards a facility in order to be interrogated proper, Lusamine having suspected them to be behind her grunts' misbehavior. While Faba first attempts to lie once more on calling Lusamine, his fib is quickly revealed through Lusamine's testimony, to which stubbornly defends his innocence. However, this meeting is interrupted by a group of turncoat agents of Team Aether, managing to distract most of the heroes into venturing outward as Lusamine is left alone with Faba. Here, the group of unruly members reveal that they plan to usurp Lusamine's position in the Aether Foundation after their change-of-heart on controlling Ultra Beasts, with the remaining grunts hoping to use their leadership change to once again research the invasive fiends. As such, they reveal the recent "theft" of the intel to actually be a shady transaction, working alongside them in the hopes of becoming feared by all. As this is going on, Team Aether grunts appear alongside Team Rocket's own in the tundra, fighting against the trial captains in order to pacify their threat. Gaining the upper hand through an ambush, the trial captains appear to be defenseless against their assault under the arrival of Tapu Lele and Tapu Bulu, who manage to defeat the grunts' original teams after being tamed by the heroes. However, instead of fleeing from the guardian deities and their new trainers, the grunts reveal their true potential through their captured Ultra Beasts, their actions forcing the protagonists to make a getaway end after being assisted by Olivia, Nanu, Looker, and Anabel. At the same time the remaining professionals confront the grunts' attack, Lusamine is left to stand alone against the vicious attack from the two teams, with even her Necrozma being left weakened by their ranks. However, as the situation seems dire, Faba (who is revealed to have never betrayed Team Aether, only working to find a better job and to redeem himself to Lusamine) and Team Skull appear to make quick work of their ranks, leaving the grunts helpless as Guzma successfully threatens a Team Aether Grunt into revealing the method to shut down their technology. After Team Skull's grunts track down the devices, they successfully manage to force the devices to shut down their operations, resulting in the twin teams' plans being foiled.
