Agahnim is the secondary antagonist of the Akira Himekawa manga based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Unlike the games, he is a separate entity from Ganon.
Appearance[]
Agahnim is a wizard dressed in a mask and red robes with a mouth cover.
Biography[]
Prior to the manga, Agahnim helped fend off a series of disasters that plagued Hyrule as part of his scheme to earn the King of Hyrule's trust and the respect of everyone in the castle. He later betrayed and vanquished the King then overwhelmed the human soldiers of the kingdom with soldiers formed by inserting living darkness he controlled in suits of armor. Following their victory, Agahnim imprisoned Princess Zelda in the dungeon to be a sacrifice after having sacrificed six other descendants of the Seven Sages, uncaring how much bloodshed Ganon will flood Hyrule with when the seal breaks.
During a stormy night that knocked over apples Link helped his uncle harvest, Link entered a hidden passage in Hyrule Castle where he watches his uncle fight Agahnim who gains the upper hand when he stabs him to death as the wizard is walking away. As he is dying, he pleads with Link to protect what's left of the royal family and he may be able to see his parents again, having kept their actual fates secret to keep Link safe.
Enraged with Zelda slipping past his barriers and Link intruding in the castle, Agahnim orders a ball and chain trooper to kill Link to keep him out of the dungeon he is holding Zelda in. Infuriated with Zelda's escape and Link being a surviving relative of the knights, the wizard ordered a manhunt for them as the seventh sacrifice for the ritual will not be complete without Zelda.
Although Link managed to get Zelda to the santuary, Agahnim manages to break the barrier surrounding it and swipes Zelda and repels the attacks of warriors including a vindicative Link who helplessly watches the wizard spirit Zelda away. Subsequently, Agahnim placed a false bounty on Link for crimes he framed him for and was shown with no concern over his minions attacking people.
Link entered a bar to find there were people who had problems with Agahnim as well as he sacrificed a girl they knew as part of his plan to break the seal. They have even sw through his lies. Following Link procuring the Pendant of Courage and nearly getting killed by Ghanti, Agahnim desperately seeks the last sentence of the spell needed to carry out the sacrifice before deciding he needs the Book of Mudora.
He soon learns that Link has the Pendant of Courage and vows to show him real power. While Link was wandering the desert with the Book of Mudora in search of the Power Pendant, a scorpion causes him to lose his footing, allowing Agahnim to swipe the book from him and tries to stab him with a dagger when a sword was thrown his way leading to him retreating with just it, musing that the scorpion will finish the hero for him.
After Link survives his ordeal and procures the Pendant of Wisdom and the Master Sword, Ganon contact Agahnim as the time to sacrifice Zelda and break the seal on the Dark World and Agahnim obliges. Agahnim proceeds to cast his spell on Zelda, calling the taking of her life an immeasurable joy before Link manages to break through his soldiers and confront him.
Link attacks the wizard only to find that it only goes through Agahnim as if he were an illusion. The wizard freezes Link in place and warns him that his death will keep him from learning where his parents are. He then makes Link watch as he sacrifices Zelda in front of him. The wizard proceeds to try and kill Link.
However, the blade absorbs the blast as it is the blade of evil's bane. Upon defeat, Agahnim reveals that the gate to the dark world is already open as Link falls into it. He then learns from the village of Outcasts that Agahnim was his pawn and that the seven maidens are still alive and trapped in dungeons throughout.
Finding that Link is on the move again, Agahnim sends evil spirits into a Palace he is heading to. After Link manages to save six of the maidens and departs to find Zelda without Ghanti's help, Agahnim kidnaps her in order to have a chance to defeat Link. At Turtle Rock, Agahnim has been expecting Link and explains that Light and Dark will soon become one. The wizard then proceeds to sic Trinexx on Link and devour him.
The moment Link defeats it, it turns out Agahnim turned Ghanti into the creature and proceeds to attack the wizard in a rage before the inner darkness starts turning him into a monster and renders him unable to use the Master Sword as part of the wizard's trap.
Zelda however breaks free and manages to calm Link down and restore his humanity, leading to the wizard retreating to Ganon's tower. Zelda laments that he used to have a kind heart before healing Ghanti's wounds. Zelda then talks about the mists near Ganon's Tower showing Agahnim's past where he could not overcome his desires. He had been friends with studying to become a wizard as he could not be a good swordsman in hopes of helping the people of Hyrule.
However, Agahnim found a sinister book and was told to destroy it as it was pure evil. The wizard refused and instead banished Link's parents to the Dark World, having made a deal with Ganon which lead to Link having no parents. When Link approaches the wizard, he could only warn the hero to stay away and begs Ganon for more power, but the demon king turns on the wizard tell him to know his place and he needs him no longer as he kills him. As Agahnim dies, he could mutter Zelda's name as he slowly closes his eyes.
