Agatha Harkness (What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?)

Agatha Harkness also know as Cosmic Queen is the titular main protagonist of the What If...? episode "What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?"

She is a highly charismatic sorceress who became an actor so she could perform a ritual to steal the power of the Celestial Tiamut under the pretense of filming a movie.

She was voiced by Kathryn Hahn. who also played the Sacred Timeline version of Agatha and Jennifer Barkley from Parks and Recreation, as well as voicing Ericka Van Helsing from Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

History[]

At some point, Agatha became aware of a Tiamut, a Celestial hidden within the planet. Agatha wanted the power for herself, which brought her in conflict with the Eternals. Agatha proved too strong for the team, and she killed most of them and stole their powers, leaving only Kingo. Needing a front for her plans, Agatha devoted her life to acting, hoping to play off the ritual to steal Tiamut's power as part of a movie.

Realizing she needed a living Eternal to perform the ritual, Agatha had director Howard Stark hire Kingo onto the picture. Kingo was glad to comply, hoping this would be his opportunity to stop Agatha and figure out what happened to the other Eternals. During a choreographed dance sequence, Agatha and Kingo engaged in witty banter, where Agatha told the Eternal that she was trying to save the Earth, as Tiamut's emergence would destroy the planet. After the filming crew left, Agatha and Kingo fought, which ended up destroying the set.

After putting their differences aside, Agatha and Kingo came to Howard Stark and had him film the rest of the movie at an observatory. Using Kingo as a battery, Agatha extracted Tiamut's energy, though this caught the attention of Arishem the Judge, the leader of the Celestials. With her newfound cosmic power, Agatha fought Arishem and, using her knowledge of witchcraft and her manipulative personality, killed him. Agatha then revealed her true intention to take over the world, though Kingo was able to appeal to her insecurities.

After reviving the Eternals and giving up villainy, Agatha devoted her life to acting, though it was suspected by Kingo that the other celestials sought revenge on her. Agatha reassured Kingo, saying that they could save it "for the sequel".

Personality[]

Like the original, Agatha is very cunning and manipulative. She managed to hide her true nature and powers to most of a movie studio, and she had Kingo convinced that she was trying to save the Earth, rather than conquer it. Being an actor, Agatha also has quite a flair for the dramatic, even being accompanied by a large troop of dancers during one of her films. Under her facade, Agatha is still a villain, however. She is willing to lie and kill to achieve her ultimate goal, which is power.

Deep down, Agatha is deeply insecure, only seeking cosmic power to compensate for the fact that she thinks she is a nobody. These insecurities are what allows Kingo to get to her in the end, thus redeeming the witch.

Trivia[]

She is the third cartoon adaptation of Agatha Harkness. First being a version Avenger: Unite They Stand, and second being from X-Men Evolution.
Unlike her sacred timeline counterpart who is not truly redeemed because she has little to no remorse for her crimes (except for using her son's song to lure other witches into her coven so she can drain their power), and even told Teen to get use to killing people. However, her What if? counterpart admitted to Kingo that she simply wanted to be loved (presumably being insecure for not getting love from her mother if her sacred timeline's backstory is anything to go by) and redeemed herself.
