| “ | Being so desperate that you’ll ask those foreign Eastern people from a small filthy country? Haha… hahaha! This is really stupid; those pigs don’t even know how to read the Bible, so how much can you expect from them? According to our law, once someone marries a non-Roman Catholic, they’re guilty of bestiality; you should be clear about that. Don’t tell me that you think that everyone’s like you because they’re Christians? What Amakusa? What British Puritans? Those people don’t have the right to talk about Christ! They aren’t humans, they’re pigs! They’re mules! Of course this will happen when you hand your life over to them. Tricking an animal is so easy! Just appease them, and they’ll automatically turn their prey over! | „ |
| ~ Agnese tormenting Orsola while expressing her fanaticism. |
Agnese Sanctis is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
She is a nun and a member of the Roman Orthodox Church who serves the church by fighting on behalf as the leader of Agnese Forces, a Roman Church paramilitary unit named and lead by Agnese herself. She first appears as the main antagonist of the Orsola Aquinas Rescue arc, but later on reforms following her confrontation with Touma and ends up becoming both his ally and joins Necessarius along with the English Puritan Church.
She is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in the Japanese version of the anime and Alex Moore in the English version, the latter of whom also voices Flare Corona.
Appearance[]
Agnese is about one/two years younger than Index is but is still around the same height as her. She appears to be very slender as her waist is even slimmer than that of Index who is rather slim herself. She has dark reddish hair that is tied in many pencil-thinned braids that make deadlocks and has dark reddish eyes as well. She wears a traditional Roman Catholic nun uniform with sleeves that are long enough to cover her hands but has a much shorter lower half with her thighs being exposed. She also wears a pair of chompine platform shoes because of beauty and wears the Roman Catholic cross on her neck.
Personality[]
Agnese has many layers and forms of her overall personality in general depending on the situations she's in. When she's off duty, Agnese behaves much like any other girl her age, being rather childish, clumsy and awkward, especially due to her unique footwear, which she proudly claims is her "personal style." She gets easily embarrassed when she's caught in lewd situations and is also afraid of slugs. Like many on the Magic Side, she's rather unfamiliar with modern technology which she's not used to seeing such as when she stuffed an entire futon into a washing machine and it flooded. Agnese also doesn't like the idea of having to speak to a foreigner in a foreign language as was shown with her broken Japanese and has the tendency of sleeping in her underwear and sleepwalking as well.
As the leader of the Agnese Forces, she is an extremely devout follower of the Roman Orthodox Church and has no qualms with resorting to unscrupulous methods like manipulation and deceit to carry out the will of the Church, such as when she tricked both Touma and the Anglican Church into handing over Orsola Aquinas. She follows her Church's dogma blindly, as seen when she subjected Orsola to a mock Trial of Sin. Agnese holds deep contempt for all magicians, referring to their magic as "Christian Black Magic," yet she justifies her own use of magic as part of her Church's history. She also harbors disdain for non-Roman Catholics, viewing them as animals. When dealing with other factions or organizations, Agnese is not above deceiving them, withholding information, and bending the truth.
She is highly ruthless and vicious when it comes to eliminating enemies of the Church, demanding absolute loyalty from her subordinates, who are willing to do anything on her behalf, such as beating a defenseless woman near death or even mutilating themselves. Agnese is very sadistic and visibly takes pleasure in toying with and making others suffer, as seen with Touma and Orsola. Orsola states that Agnese's actions are mainly driven by doubt rather than true faith, a view that is reinforced when the Agnese Forces begin to lose confidence in her ability to defeat Touma, particularly as they face pressure from both Stiyl and the Amakusa-Remix Style of Church.
Despite her doubts and flaws, she actually cares for her forces, specifically Lucia and Angelene, both of whom Agnese feels a deep sense of trust towards. She even makes a deal with Touma to ensure the safety of her forces while they were imprisoned by Biagio Busoni. After being defeated and saved by Touma, she ends up becoming more level headed and she ends up redeeming herself and joins Necessarius along with her subordinates where she becomes a representative of Roman Catholicism in the United Kingdom. She now exhibits a more carefree and youthful demeanor, embracing moments of fun and camaraderie with her friends. She happily participates in activities like washing clothes with Orsola, playing cards with friends, and engaging in playful antics, such as flipping others' skirts, though she doesn’t like it when her own skirt is flipped.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Lotus Wand: Agnese's primary weapon, it is a metallic religious staff with an angel statue on it which represents the fifth element, Ether, which allows it to change into any weapon of the other elements. Everything is created from the five elements. By mixing this with Idol Theory, the five-element staff represents everything, allowing Agnese to cause everything to be suitable for this rule, like air itself. Thus, Agnese can make effects that happen to the Lotus Wand happen to the enemy ignoring the distance and space between them, creating an effect similar to a voodoo doll. The staff allows Agnese to launch invisible attacks against her opponents and can alter the level of damage based on how much damage she's inflicted on the staff herself. By striking the ground with the bottom of the Lotus Wand, Agnese can create an explosive flash of light to temporarily blind opponents.
- Brainwashing: Agnese has the power to brainwash her subordinates at any time to obey her every will. She's an expert an brainwashing and she often uses it on her followers in battle. An example is that whenever she writes something down on her notebook, the same message is sent out to the rest of her subordinates and she can bend her followers to her own personal will such as during the battle between the English Puritan Church, the Amakusa, and Touma where Agnese ordered her followers to stab their ears to prevent Index from trying to convince them to not attack them.
- Divine Protection of Ægidius: While not fully confirmed, Agnese possibly knows how to apply the Divine Protection of Ægidius spell. She's seen using it during a mock trial of sin against Orsola Aquinas to have the ceremony go uninterrupted. This was later dispelled by Touma as usual.
- Tattva: Agnese can utilize spells derived from combinations of Tattva symbols to identify and highlight traces of residual information in her surroundings.
- Apas of Prithvi: By invoking the symbol of a silver crescent moon shining within a yellow square with an additional command while clapping her hands in front of her chest, Agnese uses this spell to detect residual magical information in her immediate surroundings. It causes all objects and markings in the affected area with traces of human-altered magic power to glow with a faint light, colored according to the type of magic. This combination symbolizes Water of Earth.
- Tejas of Vayu: This spell allows Agnese to identify items with handwritten information concerning a specific subject, using the residual thoughts which soak in while they are being written to carry out the search. When used, the pages with the relevant information give off a faint light. This combination symbolizes Fire of Wind.
- Tejas of Prithvi: By invoking the symbol of a red equilateral triangle shining within a yellow square, Agnese can use this spell against an enemy to temporarily place them in a state of confusion or hallucination, exploiting the malfunction which occurs in the mind when one uses Tattva incorrectly. When used against the Barcelona priest, it caused his aim to be thrown off and rendered him unable to repel thoughts about the negative interpretation which Agnese pointed out concerning the gold in his spiritual item, intended to defend against curses but made of a material that can also gather them. This combination symbolizes Fire of Earth.
