“ | I'm the one who killed your father. And I torched your family and loved ones. I'm not Agni. I'm Fire Punch. | „ |
Agni, otherwise known as Fire Punch, is the titular main protagonist of the Fire Punch series. Agni was born with a regeneration blessing that allowed him to remain effectively immortal as he, his village and sister where incinerated by Behemdolg soldier Doma.
He sets out on a quest for revenge to kill him and live for his sister Luna's sake. While initially presented as a reluctant hero, Agni gradually descends into insanity as he becomes infatuated with Judah having her fill the role of his deceased sister as he goes on to unknowingly and sometimes willingly kills countless innocent people in the sake of protecting her.
Appearance[]
Agni is a tall, muscular man with short black hair. Due to Doma incinerating him as a boy with undying flames, Agni's entire body is engulfed in flames except for the left side of his face, while the rest remain continually burning. During the final arc of Fire Punch, Agni is released of the fire engulfing his body.
Personality[]
Agni was once a brave and headstrong boy, willing to sacrifice his regenerative limbs to protect his sister and feed villagers. Following the death of his parents Agni became heavily protective of Luna refusing to cut off her regenerative limbs and often dotted after her. When Behemdolg arrived Agni was defiant and refused to disclose his blessing to Doma. When Doma incinerated him and his village, Agni spent multiple years regenerating while being engulfed in flames dwelling on his hatred for Doma and Behemdolg for killing Luna and putting him in this state deciding that killing Doma would be his main drive for living. By the time Agni was 23 he was largely stoic and standoffish, inadvertently committing heroic acts by fighting off Behemdolg soldiers and freeing slaves in the process, one of them being a young boy named Sun. While brushing the boy off he grew concerned for the boys well being. When encountering Judah he became convinced she was a grown up Luna that lost her memory.
Agni continued to fool himself into believing Judah was Luna despite being told that she wasn't and even during his attempt to kill her when she became the Tree. Due to his trauma and attachment to Luna, Agni can at times go in to blind range and completely blank out and have murderous episodes of wrath spurred on by hallucination. In this state, Agni isn't aware of his surroundings and immediately kills anything he perceives as a threat while single-mindedly hunting enemies as in the case of Doma and all of the seventeen children Doma had been looking after. Overtime Agni's mental state degrades far more to the point where he tells an amnesic Judah that her name is Luna and that he's her older brother, essentially grooming Judah into his ideal version of what the actual Luna might've been like as an adult. Over a decade Agni becomes completely obsessed with Judah believing that she needs him to survive and further deludes himself into believing she is his sister even when the former figures out shes not. When confronted by Tena his adopted relative and inadvertent victim of his actions, she attempts to appeal to his humanity and end his obsession with Judah in order to prevent anymore lives from being loss, Agni however rebukes this and punches her leading her son to ignite him on fire continuing his reign as fire punch.
Biography[]
Agni grew up with his his parents and younger sister Luna until a group of men broke into their home and murdered his mother and father to be used as food and kindling for the fire. Due to their ability to regenerate, the siblings were held prisoner by the men and repeatedly had their limbs cut off to be used for the same purpose as their parents. Some time later, one of the men attempted to rape Luna, but Agni broke out of his shackles by breaking his own arm and killed the man with a butcher knife. He then proceeded to free Luna by cutting off her limbs, promising it'd be the last time she'd ever have to feel that kind of pain. Agni and Luna wandered across the snowy wasteland in search of shelter and were on the verge of death; luckily, the pair were found by a group of people and brought to their village.
Three years later, Luna assists Agni in providing meat for the village by chopping off his right arm repeatedly. When Luna suggests using her own arms at some point, Agni rejects it; refusing to let his sister go through any kind of pain. After delivering some of the meat to Granny Jishima, they go to visit a man named Bana, who turned out to have died from starvation, as he refused to eat human flesh. Agni feels responsible for Bana’s death, but Luna comforts him and suggests calling the Priest.
At dinner, Luna offers her brother some stew she made from his arm, but he declines, stating his Regeneration Blessing makes eating unnecessary for him; despite this, she still insists that he have some food whether he needs it or not, to which Agni gives in.
As the siblings prepare to sleep, Agni tells Luna how he remembers swimming in the lake on hot days before the world froze, and how the water was different from the cold of the present, Agni promises to show Luna the world once it gets warmer.
The next day, Agni returns home after hunting a deer when he sees a plane flying towards the village and, upon investigating, sees a large group of men rounding up the older members of the village at gunpoint. Agni tries to intervene, telling the men to leave the elders alone, but is then approached by a man called Doma, who explains they're searching for Blessed Ones to bring to the city of Behemdolg.
Upon hearing one of the soldiers report the village houses were filled with human meat and the villagers were cannibals, Doma orders the soldiers to return to the plane before setting the whole village ablaze with his Fire Blessing, due to his Regeneration Blessing, Agni survived but was continually regenerating and burning for the next 8 years. After Agni manages to walk, and sets off to get revenge on Doma and Behemdolg. After dispatching soldiers and freeing slaves in the process he comes across Sun, the two eventually run into Judah. Agni is beheaded by Judah and the Behemdolg army arrives to capture Agni, recognizing the fire on his body as being product of Doma's blessing. In the meantime, Judah calls for Doma so he can analyze Agni's flames, which causes him to come to meet him. After Agni regenerates himself, kills both of the guards keeping him hostage and attempts to kill Doma, Agni is decapitated once more, as the soldiers plan on executing him by drowning his head in the ocean.
Unexpectedly, the train gets hijacked by the amateur movie director Togata, who fights and kills the soldiers within, including the high ranking members Ivan and Simon. After Togata escapes the train with the enslaved girl Neneto, who became her cameraman, Agni is freed by having his box exploded by bombs planted by Togata. Judah, who had escaped the train attack, reencounters him with his new partners on a nearby beach. Agni is elated, still firmly believing that Judah might be Luna, which she denies, claiming she had lived for over 130 years and has no idea what he's talking about. Agni, who despite everything, still clings on the idea that she might secretly be Luna, stops Togata, telling him that if he lets her go, he'll star on his movie.
After Agni finally arrives at Behemdolg, freeing their slaves, he encounters Judah alongside her forces of death row blessed individuals. After a long fight between Agni and the blessing users, in which he ends up destroying the entire city by accidentally activating the bombs inside the buildings with his fire. Judah depressed tried to touch Agni's flames, action which Agni tries to stop her from doing so though before Judah dies he is confronted by Sulya. Agni tries to kill her, but is impaled by icicles created from her ability. Sulya then takes Judah's severed head and runs away with it. Later Agni and Togata Upon finding out about this, Agni and Togata both find a way to go to his hideout. There, Agni finds Doma fishing on ice and has a talk with him where the ex-soldier explains that he burned Agni's village down in order to protect nearby villages since their cannibalistic attitude could lead to the potential death of other humans. He mentions his indoctrination training and how he burned down the movies in a fit of rage. This enrages Togata, who was fascinated by the movie collection. Togata snaps at him and begs Agni to kill him. After this alerts Domas' children, who go out to protect him, Agni gives up on killing him, seeing that he couldn't bear the thought of his death if it meant the ill of a group of children.
While heading back the memories of Doma incinerating his village, himself, and Luna linger in Agni's head and eventually burns his own face going into a blind rage. In this state o Agni goes on a rampage on Doma's base, killing all of the children present and incinerating every single one of them. Doma tries to stop him but Agni punches him. After snapping out of it, Agni watches as an impaled Doma burns into a corpse. Agni attempts to drown himself out of guilt but is saved by Togata who dies in the process from touching his flames.
Agni then witnesses Sulya's World Tree growing in the distance and starts sucking the life of the entire population using its roots. After reaching the top, Agni finds Judah and starts punching her, waiting for a miracle to happen, all the while Sulya is yelling for her to kill him. One final punch and the entire World Tree explodes. Agni wakes up with Judah, transported elsewhere, where the Earth's temperature has increased considerably. Agni is stripped of Doma's fire while Judah loses her memories. For the next ten years Agni becomes obsessed with Judah keeping up the idea they're brother and sister but when Agni's former followers attack him and capture Judah he goes on a killing spree. Agni then snaps and attacks Tena but is lit on fire once more due to Iya's flames, Agi then he goes on to save his "sister" from the Agnists and eventually kills Sun. After Sun's death Judah blows off the unburned half of Agni's head killing his old body while the new one regenerates without the flames and his memories of the past. Judah makes a deal with his former friend Neneto in that she will become the world tree if she agrees to look after Agni, Neneto initially refuses but accepts and for the next 80 years Agni lives with Neneto unaware of his past life until one of his disciples hands him a video tape displaying his actions as Fire Punch. After many centuries following the worlds destruction Agni encounters Judah sharing an embrace
