~ Ahtal Ka's entry in the Hunter's Notes |
Ahtal-Ka is a supporting antagonist and final boss of the 2017 action-adventure video game Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. A member of her eponymous species of Neopterons, Ahtal Ka is a greedy but intelligent monster that targets human settlements and fortifications, raiding them for weapons and materials to build up her nest. As a result, the hunter is called to stop her when she and her moving fortress appear nearby an ancient ruin.
Physiology[]
Ahtal-Ka is a large, mantis-like insect, measuring about 15 meters in length. She is mainly covered in a golden yellow hide, with long, lilac eyes and sharp raptorial claws with black stripes. She has a hood-like crest behind her head resembling a pharaoh's headdress, wing-like extensions on her claws, as well as curved protrusions on her legs, all with several purple stripes. Her abdomen terminates in a large, hand-like extremity, with three claw-like spinnerets at the end. Male Ahtal Kas are golden while females are brown, but can turn a brilliant gold if they consume enough males. Ahtal Ka's eyes turn red and glow when enraged.
Ahtal-Ka's nest, the Ahtal Neset, is a large, quadrupedal automaton resembling some sort of wyvern. It is mostly composed of rubble and metal mechanisms, with a vaguely dragon-like head and three "toes" on each foot. Its body has numerous bits of gold silk attached to it, which Ahtal Ka uses to pilot her mech. As Ahtal Nesets are usually impenetrable, it's likely that with time, this one would have looked even more bulky and different.
Biography[]
Background[]
Like most of the monsters in the series, this specific Ahtal-Ka's origins are not known. However, what can be surmised is that Ahtal-Ka lived in a region filled with powerful quadrupedal monsters such as Lao-Shan-Lung in her youth, causing her to replicate their form in the Ahtal-Neset when she got older. Using her new nest, Ahtal-Ka would, like many of its kin, begin to raid and destroy fortresses, harvesting their building materials and weapons to build her nest up. This would allow her to contribute to the reputation of her species as fortress-destroying calamities akin to Elder Dragons. It's also very likely that Ahtal-Ka cannibalised many males to attain her golden hue, seeing as she's evidently female based on the egg cases found in her Ahtal Neset.
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate[]
During the events of the game, Ahtal-Ka settles down in the Forlorn Citadel, burying her nest under the sands and causing her to effectively disappear from the Hunter's Guild's watchful eye. Curious, the Guild sends a renowned hunter to track her down where they find Ahtal-Ka awaiting them. The monster immediately goes on the offensive, beginning her boss fight.
In her first phase, Ahtal-Ka mainly utilises her silk to dredge up pieces of wreckage and weapons from the ground, slinging them around to trip the hunter up or knock them down. She will also use her claws and tail to deliver cutting slashes, send out silk streams to tangle the hunter, and will exude her pheromones to reduce defence. During this phase, the hunter can utilise ballistas scattered throughout the arena and supplies dropped by the Guild to fire at Ahtal-Ka, dealing heavy damage to her.
Sensing that she's outmatched physically, Ahtal-Ka will enter her second phase, dredging up her Ahtal Neset from the sand and kicking up a violent sandstorm. In this form, Ahtal-Ka is completely invulnerable, hiding inside a silk cocoon nestled in the machine's heart from which she shoots out concentrated beams of silk. She will also control the Ahtal Neset to slowly stomp around the arena, crushing anybody underfoot and releasing massive shockwaves. The hunter must destroy silk-covered parts of her mech and deal damage to it, causing the Ahtal Neset to disassemble and Ahtal-Ka to re-emerge.
Ahtal-Ka's third phase proceeds very similarly to the first one, only that this time she utilises Dragonators, strapping one to her back as a spear and hurling three of them at the hunter. If damaged enough she will pull out the Ahtal Neset once more, possessing an expanded move pool to knock hunters off the mech's back, sending powerful gusts of pheromones of slamming them with the tail's mech. Once again. the Ahtal Neset must be damaged to make it fall.
With her nest finally destroyed, Ahtal-Ka emerges from the rubble completely furious and wearing the last piece of the Ahtal Neset left: a giant wheel. In this phase, Ahtal-Ka will cover the entire ruin with strands of her silk, tangling up the hunter should they step in it. Additionally, she becomes incredibly aggressive, utilising leaps, slashes and body slams in more rapid succession. The aforementioned wheel is also used heavily in her attacks, with which she runs the hunter over or slams into them like an oversized yoyo. Weapons such as Dragonators are also pulled up to attack the hunter.
Eventually, Ahtal-Ka is slain, causing the skies to clear and putting an end to her destructive rampage at last. Despite this, a later quest has a description matching Ahtal Ka's behaviour completely, implying that Ahtal-Ka wasn't truly killed, or that this is an individual that simply resembles her to an incredible amount.
Personality[]
Like most of her species, Ahtal-Ka is an exceptionally aggressive and kleptomaniacal Neopteron who is willing to do anything to get what she wants. As such, she will raid fortresses and flatten entire armies just to obtain the materials and weapons she desires for her nest. In particular, Ahtal-Ka seems to be somewhat motivated by an eerily human sense of vanity, seeing as her golden colouration is the product of consuming several males, implying that she intentionally did this to make herself more attractive. Furthermore, she's guaranteed to enrage, implying that she's either furious at her nest being destroyed, or readying herself to fight without her greatest defence.
Powers and abilities[]
- Genius level intelligence: Ahtal-Ka's most potent ability. Extraordinarily smart compared to even humans, Ahtal-Ka and the others of her species are capable of building extremely complex machines, which they utilise as nests to guard their offspring. Said machines, dubbed the Ahtal-Nesets, are incredibly advanced compared to even the most complex vehicles designed by humans, allowing Ahtal-Ka to steamroll fortresses effortlessly and raid them for parts. Even when left without her machine, Ahtal-Ka is remarkably resourceful, using the last remaining piece of her nest, a giant wheel, to run hunters over and trip them up, dredging Dragonators and other weapons to attack them as well.
- Incredible physical attributes: Like most monsters, Ahtal-Ka is far more resilient, strong and durable than an average human, though she is rather middling when compared to most other monsters. She can effortlessly roll around and throw gigantic weapons such as Dragonators with ease, with her tail slams and claw swipes being powerful enough to knock hunters off their feet.
- Sharp claws and tail: Like others of her species, Ahtal-Ka has powerful raptorial claws with which she can slash at foes. The spinnerets on her tail are also quite sharp and can be used to smack foes around too.
- Silk production: Using the spinnerets on her abdomen, Ahtal-Ka can produce incredible amounts of a sticky, golden silk which she uses to entangle hunters or bind things together. This silk is incredibly strong, allowing Ahtal-Ka to hold her Ahtal Neset together with nothing but it, and can even dredge it up from the sand just by yanking it up with several threads.
- Pheromone production: Ahtal-Ka can secrete a potent perfume from her body which have a powerful odour, weakening the defences of any who smell it.

Trivia[]
- As the final boss of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, a game largely considered to be the final "classic style" Monster Hunter game, Ahtal-Ka has a lot of symbolism in her design:
- She greatly resembles a pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, harkening back to the series's rich history by likening it to the many great civilisations that inhabited Egypt.
- She serves as a monstrous reflection of the hunter in many ways; the hunters are physically unimpressive in the grand scheme of things and thus, supplement their strength and durability with equipment crafted from the corpses of their monster victims, as well as using the local wildlife to their advantage. Similarly, Ahtal-Ka lacks elemental abilities or noteworthy powers, instead using the wreckages of human creations to defend herself and as weapons.
- Additionally, the wheel is considered the most important invention in human history, making Ahtal Ka's usage of it in her final phase ironic.
- Ahtal-Ka's wheel greatly resembles depictions of the Bhavacakra, or Wheel of Reincarnation, a symbol in Buddhism representing cyclical existence. Likewise, Ahtal-Ka represents the end of "classic" Monster Hunter and a transition into a more open world style of games.
- Ahtal-Ka was voted as the 34th most popular monster in the 20th anniversary Hunter’s Choice polls, making her the most popular Neopteran in the series. Her mecha, the Ahtal Neset, was independently voted as the 95th most popular monster.
- Oddly, the nest is considered an independent monster in the game’s code even though it is just an object not a monster.
- According to the games’ official taxonomy, Ahtal-Ka is technically a beetle despite her mantis-like appearance, being part of the order Coleoptera.
- Ahtal-Ka's name is Arabic for "soul of the ruins", fitting as she pilots a mech made of rubble and human constructs.
- Ahtal-Ka will switch between the themes "Queen Haunting the Castle Ruins" and "Writhing Castle Ruins" when in her usual form and when piloting Ahtal Neset respectively, playing this game's rendition of "Proof of a Hero" for her last phase.
