See, that's the problem with having a big family... you can't protect them all.
~ Aimes revealing his true colors to Dominic Toretto, after shooting down his team's plane.

Aimes is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 action film Fast X, the tenth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise.

He is the interim leader of the Agency and an ally of the Reyes crime family. Shortly after the death of gangland boss Hernan Reyes, though, Aimes aided Hernan's son Dante in his plans for world domination and getting his revenge for his father's death for a decade; said plot involves pretending to be a no-nonsense member of the Agency who teams up with Dom before revealing he was always loyal to Dante and tricked the Agency to go against Dom and his crew. He is also Tess' former superior.

He is portrayed by Alan Ritchson, who also played Gloss in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

History[]

Working with the Reyes[]

Aimes was once a mercenary working for Hernan and Dante Reyes after establishing a partnership. The three plotted to turn their local gang into a worldwide supremacy, as Hernan promised Dante that he shall have the world or destroy it completely. After Dominic Toretto and his crew orchestrated a heist that resulted in the death of Hernan, the theft of the Reyes family fortune and the destruction of their criminal empire, Dante swore revenge and continued his partnership with Aimes.

Employed by the Agency[]

Aimes was tasked with gaining a position inside the Agency, and successfully did do. During this time, he gathered records and intel on Dominic, his crew, and all of their family members/associates. He did this to arrest Dom's crew all while leading Dom himself to his death trap, staged by Dante. Following Mr. Nobody's disappearance, Aimes succeeded him as leader of the Agency.

Fast X[]

After a terror bombing in Rome, he discussed matters about Dom's crew with Tess, such as their past crimes and mission with the Agency. Tess begged Aimes to spare them from imprisonment and penalty, but he refused to listen and spoke to his councilmen to convince them that Dom's crew should be hunted. Tess says she will stop him eventually, but she still knows that Aimes is too strong for her. All she could have the courage to do is to tell Dom about Aimes and his obsession with capturing him and his crew since Dante was framing them for the bombing of The Vatican. However, in secret, Aimes was directly involved in framing them and imprisoning them to cover up Dante's crimes and help him rise to power.

Aimes sent Letty and Cipher to a prison in Antartica, before sending soldiers to find the other members of the crew and personally going to track Dom's location. Eventually, the Agency tracks Dom and Aimes arrests him. However, they are ambushed on a bridge by Dante's men, who proceed to kill the entire convoy, leaving only Aimes and Dom alive. In order to avoid suspicion and gain everyone's trust to finish his plan, Aimes pretends to side with Dom and throws a gun to Dom to use against Dante's men. While Dante was standing on a bridge ready to brutally kill Isabel in front of Dom, Tess arrives. Dante however shot Tess and pretended to shoot Aimes, as he escaped with Aimes' secret help. After Tess was taken to hospital by Isabel, Aimes then flew a plane which Dom would eventually reach Dante during his chase in the desert after his son Brian and his brother Jakob, and then drive a car out of the plane's boot, ready to fall from the sky straight into the battleground.

Aimes then pretended to assist Dom in getting his son back until he reached the rendezvous point on the dam where Dom is stopped by two remote-controlled semi-trucks. Aimes then revealed his true colors when he shoots the crew's aircraft when they attempt to rescue Dom from his trap, possibly killing them all. After telling Dom and teaching him a lesson that he shouldn’t protect his family all the time, Dante then told Dom that Aimes was one of his own mercenaries and a former partner in his father's organization. Aimes then watches as Dom drives off the edge of the dam to avoid Dante's trap but Dante has the dam rigged with explosives and activates them, leaving it unknown if Dom and his son were killed as the screen abruptly cut to black and left to the interpretation of the viewer.

Personality[]

Aimes is presented as a tough, no nonsense man, obsessed with finding Dom for unknown reasons. He knows everything from the start about Dante and Dom, revealing that Dante was Cipher's former secret employer and manipulator. He does seem to redeem himself and understand that Dom isn't guilty, up until he reveals his true self; a selfish, ruthless and sadistic mercenary from Dante's army who takes no qualms in aiding a catastrophic plan for world conquest or destruction if it doesn't work.

Aimes from the start seemed a sneaky and deceiving individual, but when revealing his alignment to Dante, having the Agency trust him and help him bend the laws of the world before he presumably kills Dom's crew, Aimes was quickly revealed as a treacherous tyrant, only loyal to Dante and having no remorse if he manages to kill lots of people rather than saving their lives, as the Agency suggests.

Trivia[]

  • Keanu Reeves was considered to play Aimes before Alan Ritchson was cast but couldn't take the role because of scheduling conflicts with John Wick - Chapter 4. This marks the second time Reeves declines a Fast & Furious role, after the Eteon Director of Hobbs & Shaw.
  • Aimes is Mr. Nobody's successor and the current leader of the Agency, only with Tess being his second-in-command. Unlike Mr. Nobody, Aimes is seemingly a selfish, ruthless individual and rude man, whereas Mr. Nobody is a kind, no nonsense, good man.
    • However, it is possible that since Tess was Nobody's daughter that Aimes wasn't really meant to be the leader of the organization, as he might have even usurped his position without him knowing.
  • According to Alan Richtson, there was an early version of the Fast X screenplay in which Aimes and Dante Reyes were brothers. This would have also made Aimes in turn another son of Hernan Reyes (unless he and Dante only shared the same mother).
    • Ironically, both Alan Richtson and Jason Momoa portrayed Aquaman in different DC productions: Richtson played Aquaman in Smallville and Momoa played Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe.
  • Aimes was reportedly a creation from Fast & Furious director Justin Lin, who was originally directing Fast X before exiting the film apparently due to creative conflicts with Vin Diesel and being replaced by Louis Leterrier.
  • When Aimes shoots down the plane carrying Roman, Tej, Ramsey, and Han, and their fate is left unknown and to be interpreted by the viewer, one hint for their survival is that they may have gotten the parachute earlier and escaped in the nick of time before the plane crashed. This was because the plane wasn't destroyed completely as the rocket only hit the wing when Roman ordered his crew to brace for the missile. Another fact was the plane may have crash landed, which may seemingly be revealed in the second part.
  • When pretending to join forces with Dom, it is noted that he is seemingly using his own Agency soldiers as pawns as he doesn’t even care if they are killed by Dante and his henchmen.
  • Aimes pretending to help Dom, before revealing his true colors as a double agent can also be similar to George McHale from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as they are at first pretending to be good so they can gain the protagonists trust, before revealing their true colors later on.
  • Amies is considered an evil counterpart to Luke Hobbs:
    • Both work for the Agency and were tasked to hunt down Toretto and his crew. However, the big difference between the two was that Aimes is a traitor working for Dante and pretended to help Toretto to stop Dante, whereas Luke spared them and eventually join Toretto's crew. Although earlier, Luke Hobbs wasn't going to let Brian and Dom go free at the conclusion of Fast Five, but gave them a 24-hour head start.
    • New chapter and set up for Fast X: Part II." It's unclear whether the main antagonist of Fast 11 might be Aimes, a double agent who was revealed to be working with Dante when he seemingly killed members of Team Toretto in Fast X.
  • Amies is also similar to Riley Hicks:
    • Both worked for government organizations and are both traitors working for the big bad.
