Aiwass, also known as DRAGON, the Holy Guardian Angel, and the true person who holds the secrets to modern western magic organizations, is one of the overarching antagonists of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
A mysterious being of unknown origin, Aiwass is a Secret Chief was the one who dictated the Book of the Law to Aleister Crowley, eventually becoming his mentor. According to Othinus, Aiwass is the angel of the bottommost layer of the world, the Pure World of physical laws untouched by magic or religion. It seems to be one of the cornerstones of Aleister Crowley's plan and his greatest treasure. In truth, Aiwass answer to Anna Sprengel as he was summoned much earlier than Aleister thought in order for him to fulfil his role and frees her of Madame Horos' possession.
He is voiced by Miyamoto Mitsuru in Japanese and Andy Mullins in English.
Appearance[]
Aiwass true form is unknown to anyone, but it takes the shape of an energy humanoid angel when summoned by Aleister. Apparently, its appearance and shape is only due to the Fuse Kazakiri, which Aleister used to give it a form. Aiwass appears with golden haired being, with a tall and thin stature. and wearing loose white clothing that covers its body entirely. Being a higher dimensional being, Aiwass is genderless, it also difficult to astern its expression.
When Anna Sprengel summons Aiwass it's shape completely differs. While he does retain his humanoid silhouette, but his head transforms into that of a falcon, hands like talons, and a foot with a single clawed-digit and an elevated heel. He had a pair of large, swan-like wings growing from his back, and large feathers around his waist and behind his legs. His body had a pale platinum glow and he had a glowing halo above his head with a pointed circle spike sticking up in its center. The exact nature of this transformation is unknown.
Personality[]
Aiwass who unlike Aleister and despite being an Angel, has expressed some casual way of talking. Before evolving when talking to Accelerator Aiwass somewhat speaks in a distorted way and normal humans can't understand what he actually is saying being referred to as an Angelic form of language.
Aiwass behavior is difficult to pinpoint as it gradually changes over the course of the series but when he was talking to Aleister he judges things efficiency, if they have a value or not. While seemingly uninterested in human society, he did show interest in both Accelerator and Kakine Teitoku abilities, and is interested in Kamijou Touma Imagine Breaker, as well as Hamazura Shiage. Aiwass just wants to experience interesting things, for example when contacting Aleister, he used a cellphone despite not needing to. He also seems to be acquainted with Kazakiri Hyouka to some degree as he allowed her to become an angel and go to Russia. Aiwass also doesn't care if he's being threatened to be killed as it doesn't care for its own life because he can't be killed anyway. He also doesn't care about Aleister threats and seems somewhat enjoying meddling with his plans.
Aiwass also fought Coronzon when the Windowless Building was launched into space, he saved Lilith's life without Aleister noticing, despite these actions Kamachi has said that Aiwass is not a good person, in fact this is revealed to be true as when was summoned by Anna Sprengel to his true colors finally reveal themselves, to be quite manipulative and even he could be manipulating Anna herself as shown with their many conversation that Aiwass could be lying to even his true contractor.
History[]
Aiwass has existed for thousands eons of years in the Pure World. In 1904 in Egypt Aleister first encounter with Aiwass was while he was on a honeymoon with his wife Rose, Aleister Crowley managed to summon the Holy Guardian Angel Aiwass. Manifesting in Rose's body, Aiwass conveyed secret knowledge to Aleister which he would compile into the Book of the Law, the central text of Thelema. This first encounter, believed to mark the dawn of the Aeon of Horus. Aleister plans to use Aiwass for his plans to destroy all magic and phases.
Due to the Magic Gods existence meddling and tampering with phases such as Othinus, disrupting the balance in the Pure World, Aiwass is unable to take form and Aleister could not give it a form up until the production of Fuse Kazakiri and similar to Kazakiri, Aiwass has to rely on AIM diffusion fields of the espers, a special code in Last Order that is propagated through the Misaka Network in order to take shape. What Aiwass did prior to that is unknown but it could be assumed he observed the on-goings on Academy City such as Touma, Hamazura and Accelerator. It's existence was also known to Shiokishi.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being a Holy Guardian Angel, Aiwass is a transcendent being and higher life form from the deepest regions of the world, Aiwass is described as a being of the Aeon of Horus, which is said to have arrived with the first contact in 1904. He is a higher dimensional being who is one of the true Secret Chief. Aiwass is Aleister's greatest treasure due to its nature existing of the bottommost layer of the world, below the phases of religion and magic, right at the Pure World. As such, its power can be harnessed to destroy the phases above it, leaving the magicless world in the process. The number Aiwass is associated with is 93 which is the same as the Thelema.
As a Transcendent Angel being, Aiwass is more than powerful enough to match beings like Coronzon. Aiwass can be considered as one of the most powerful beings in the series. His powers are also considered somewhat mysterious and cannot be understood, it can easily bypass Accelerator Vectors, tear off Kamijou Touma's Invisible Thing, can knock other people unconscious if others just stare at Aiwass and only he can choose who to stay conscious.
Manifestation: Due to its nature as an entity from the deeper regions of the world, special measures need to be taken in order to manifest Aiwass on the surface as such it takes the form of an energy form which requires an avatar in order to fully utilize its power in this world though it can compensate for the lack of an avatar to a certain degree if it leaves the planet and enters outer space, following the theory of being an extraterrestrial life form. When it first appeared before Aleister it borrowed Rose's body as a medium.
- Cosmic Keystone: Aleister needed the Imaginary Number District and a mass of AIM diffusion fields filling Academy City produced by the city esper population with the Misaka Network being used as a guidance to control its mechanism, his manifestation in the world also puts a huge toll on Last Order's body in his first appearance he had to use Fuse Kazakiri as a medium in order to appear due to her being an artificial angel. Additionally Aleister can use the power of the city espers at the Windowless Building by gathering their power to summon him.
Automatic Defense Mechanism: Aleister has installed various protective feature inside of Aiwass to prevent from committing suicide, and it cannot be killed by any means even if its core were to be destroyed because of the defenses embedded into it, Aiwass will just simply regenerate in a matter of seconds.
Wing Manifestation: Aiwass can grow glow white pale platinum wings that easily bypass Accelerator Black Wings, these wings move by their own accord without Aiwass' consent.
Halo Generation: Aiwass grew a halo over his head after evolving.
Flight: Aiwass is capable of flight through the manipulation of an unknown energy.
Outer Space Survivability: Aiwass can survive in outer space, in fact being in outer space allow him to unleash its true power as its not bound by the earth AIM diffusion field and the Misaka Network.
Light Generation: Aiwass can seemingly unleash a dazzling flash of light that is capable of blinding others. Kamijou Touma has compared this to a sunlight. Aiwass light can also use for offensive as seen when he vaporized Coronzon hair.
Plasma Manipulation: Aiwass can turn into a small sun.
Possession: Aiwass can possess others to some degree, it first possessed Aleister's wife Rose, and can remotely possess other people bodies as seen with Mina Mathers when it "borrowed" her hands to write her a new grimoire.
Mind Control Resistance: Aiwass angelic structure grants him immunity from any mind and all mental controlling abilities such as Shokuhou Misaki Mental Out.
Transcendent Power Link: Being the only known Secret Chief, the Transcendents from the Bridge Builders Cabal draw power from Secret Chiefs with hints of Magick, irregular Transcendents such as Anna Sprengel and Alice Anotherbible have much closer connection to the Secret Chiefs than regular ones as they reside in their own body.
Omniscient and Omnipresent: Aiwass displayed some level of being omniscient, as he was able to tell where Index is from thousands of miles away as well as the upcoming war in Russia. According to Shiokishi, Aiwass is also omnipresent as he can be anywhere as long as the Misaka Network exists.
Black egg: In his brief skirmish with Anna Sprengel, Aiwass displayed this ability its an invisibility-type spell.
Anna Sprengel made use of many Breakers in mimicry and mockery of Imagine Breaker, she used Aiwass as the source of her energy in her right arm.
Trivia[]
- So far in the entire series, Aiwass is the only known Secret Chief, as they are surrounded by mysterious, however Anna Sprengel did mention that she could become a Secret Chief if she wanted to but she doesn't want to go through the trouble, implying there is a way to become a Secret Chief.
- Although Aiwass has many Angelic traits, it's not very much conformed if it is indeed an Angel which make its identity even more mysterious.
