Maybe Natsume died for a reason you won't find satisfaction with. Do you still want to investigate it even if that might be the result? Even if it means your "idol" falling off her pedestal and crumbling, do you want to know the truth?
~ Akari Abe to Aoi Ooe about the latter's investigation into Shiori Natsume's death
I've got no interest in the falling idol herself. What she was thinking - who cares. But... once I found myself standing there watching, I got to see a real amusing sight. Goodbye, Aoi. I'll treasure that look on your face for the rest of my life.
~ Akari's final words to Aoi.
Without even realizing it myself, I had enshrined Akari on a pedestal. And Akari... kicked her pedestal, falling before my eyes. What did Akari see in the moment she fell and crumbled to pieces? Had Akari jumped off her pedestal wanting to see that sight for herself? Is Akari's fractured face smiling? Or else... I don't know anything anymore. I'm unable to search for the truth. All that I'm left with now... is a pedestal without an idol.
~ Aoi Ooe lamenting over the loss of her friendship with Akari

Akari Abe is the secondary protagonist of the video game Pedestal.

She is the best friend of Aoi Ooe, and acts as the latter's assistant in investigating the apparent suicide of fellow student Shiori Natsume. In truth, however, it was Akari herself who conspired to drive Natsume to suicide by acting behind the scenes to break her friendships with others and ruin her life.

Appearance[]

Akari is a teenage girl with bright red neck-length hair. For the majority of the game, she wears a red hoodie with a white high-collar shirt underneath, as well as a pair of blue jean shorts.

Personality[]

Akari is very laid-back and somewhat lazy. She rarely shows emotions, often acting aloof and disinterested. Akari believes that it is impossible to truly know another person, since one cannot always know another's emotions. When Aoi says that Natsume wasn't the type to kill herself, Akari replies that Aoi didn't understand Natsume's mind, and that she likely had worries no one knew about. She claims to have no interest in the investigation because, to her, there is no way to get the full picture.

Akari is very perceptive and intelligent, being able to make complicated deductions in a very short amount of time, as well as read other people's intentions like an open book. She almost always figures things out before Aoi does, helping her friend to fill in the blanks. It's mentioned that Akari's grades in school are exceptional.

Akari is an expert at appealing to people's emotions, as shown when she presents a façade of grief in order to help Aoi gain access to Shiori Natsume's room. Aoi is shocked by how easily Akari charms her way into the good graces of Shiori's mother, and tells Akari that she would make a great actress.

Akari is exceptionally courageous, remaining totally unfazed in most circumstances, even when she is physically attacked by a stranger. She never lets the words of others get to her, either. However, she is shown to have a crippling phobia of insects, showing genuine terror when one of Midori's "protectors" threatens to make her eat one. She recovers almost immediately afterward, though.

Akari has a close friendship with Aoi Ooe. She finds Aoi's dedication to her goals and boundless enthusiasm amusing, and assists Aoi in her investigation simply because she wants Aoi to do what she likes, despite not having any interest in the mystery of Shiori's death herself. She is also fiercely protective of her friend, as shown when she threatens to severely injure Murakami's followers when they attack Aoi for invading Murakami's privacy. Even after Aoi exposes her secret, Akari simply expresses amusement, and shows no animosity towards Aoi whatsoever, even giving her a warm smile before leaving.

Stage 2 reveals that Akari has very little in the way of a moral compass, having ruined at least two people's lives for no reason other than her own amusement. She expresses zero remorse for her actions, even when confronted by Aoi. She treats Shiori's death as nothing more than a fun diversion, saying that it was meant to be one last hurrah before she moved overseas. When Aoi confronts Akari about the information that suggests the latter was behind Natsume's troubles, Akari proceeds to calmly admit as much to Aoi's face, never breaking her cool demeanor.
