| ~ Akemura Soga's most famous quote, declaring his intent to commit genocide on Shokoku Island. |
Akemura Soga, better known as the Sword Master, is the overarching antagonist of the 2023 urban fantasy manga series Kagurabachi.
He is the wielder of Magatsumi: the strongest and most destructive of the Enchanted Blades, and the former leader of the Sword Bearers, having led them to victory in the Seitei War against Shokoku Island. He's also the brother-in-law of Kunishige Rokuhira and Chihiro's uncle.
Despite being heralded as a "hero" in Japan's history who ended the Seitei War and Kunishige Rokuhira's most trusted friend, it's ultimately revealed that he is actually a bloodthirsty and violent man who, in his twisted desire to protect Japan, made the rational choice to commit mass genocide upon Shokoku Island after the island's surrender and the war coming to an end, resulting in him becoming imprisoned by the Kamunabi and his crimes being covered up, He is the main target of Yura, who desires to team up with Soga and control the Enchanted Blades together.
Personality[]
Little was known about Soga's personality. The only thing that was said for certain is that he's a deeply violent and bloodthirsty individual, immediately taking advantage of Kyora Sazanami's usage of Magatsumi to cause mindless slaughter and destruction.
When Yura first meets him, we get a look at his true personality. In actuality, Soga was actually extremely calm, cold, and even rational, greeting Yura by stretching his limbs and making conversation about the weather. As it turns out, his action of causing the Malediction was not the result of him being an insane lunatic, but because he believed it was the necessary choice to protect Japan against the enemy. The fact he says this with full genuineness displays that Soga as someone who is utterly cold-hearted and sociopathic in his thinking, uncaring of the thousands of innocent lives he took from his actions due to seeing Shokoku as the enemy and his desire to protect Japan.
It is implied he was rather close with Kunishige, given the fact that the latter ended up marrying Soga's sister and crafted him the Magatsumi in the first place. Upon meeting Yura, one of the first things he inquires is whether or not Kunishige is dead, displaying a semblance of sad acceptance upon hearing this news and referring to Kunishige as his brother. However, despite this, he showed interest in Yura's offer to an alliance, and even before that, when he took control of Kyora's body, he had no qualms in attacking Chihiro, his nephew, although it is implied he is unaware of their relation to each other.
Biography[]
Akemura Soga was one of the six Sword Bearers chosen by Kunishige Rokuhira to defend Japan during the Seitei War. As the strongest of the Sword Bearers, Soga acted as the leader of the group and Kunishige's most trusted ally, even becoming his brother-in-law through Kunishige marrying his sister . With their combined power, the six of them managed to singlehandedly put an end to the bloody war. Soga, alongside the other Sword Bearers, was hailed as a hero by the public.
However, it turns out that at the end of the war, when Shokoku Island decided to make peaceful surrender against Japan to end the war fully, Soga refused this outcome. Making a cold and rational choice, he used the Magatsumi to cause the Malediction, a power that spread plant-like sorcery all across Shokoku and proceeded to genocide over 200,000 people on the Island. In response, the six Sword Bearers battled him and eventually subdued him. After the war, Soga was imprisoned by the Kamunabi, but was not executed due to the sorcery link between his sword and the other Enchanted Blades, which would result in the death of the other Sword Bearers if he is killed. He currently resides in an empty chamber serving as his prison cell.
During the Rakuzaichi, Kyora Sazanami unleashed the tip of Magatsumi's power in a desperate gambit to beat Chihiro Rokuhira. Soga, sensing Kyora coming into contact with his blade, possessed him using his powers and used Kyora as a vessel to attack Chihiro and Hiyuki Kagari. Soga then killed several auctioneers by using Magatsumi to devour them from the inside with plants. Ultimately, Kyora was able to resist the Soga's influence and died after giving some last words to Chihiro.
Trivia[]
- A common nickname for Soga prior to the reveal of his name in the fanbase was "Brojo," as it was frequently theorized that he and Sojo might be related due to their similar appearances and the brief glimpse of Sojo's backstory. He was also frequently referred to as "El Hermano," referencing the infamous Dragon Ball Super meme in which fans on 4chan invented a fictional brother for Jiren and hyped him up as the strongest character in the series.
- Even before chapter 100, many people had already theorized the possibility that Soga was Chihiro's uncle and that his actions were motivated as possibly revenge for the death of his sister, Kunishige's wife and Chihiro's mother. While the blood relation is confirmed, the theory of avenging his sister has yet to be revealed.
