~ Al Gui ordering Kathy's murder.

Al Gui (Mandarin Chinese for The Ghost; real name unknown) is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders episode "Cinderella and The Dragon". Al Gui is the leader of a Singapore-based exotic animal smuggling ring, specializing most in rare fish breeding. When his operations are compromised, Al Gui and his cronies have no hesitation resorting to murder in retaliation.

He's portrayed by Canadian actor Osric Chau.

Biography[]

Little is know about Al Gui, not even his real name. He was the leader of a dangerous gang of smugglers specializing in international breeds of fish they'd produce and sell for major profits. As part of the operations, Al Gui would use some of his cronies, including international citizens, to ingratiate themselves to and threaten flight crews, who were vital moles and pawns in their operations. One American accomplice, art dealer Scott Davis, was sent to target stewardesses Jane Wicks and Kathy Hall. Davis swiftly seduced Kathy into a relationship, but Jane never felt right about him in the first place. When Davis revealed his true intentions, he had already kidnapped and held prisoner Kathy's brother William, threatening to kill him if the two women didn't comply and join the ring to benefit its enterprises.

The two women finally wanted out and to get Will back, so they decided to withhold a shipment of fish, keeping them for themselves to hide away as leverage. Once the ring found out, Al Gui sent his men to interrogate Jane and Kathy, knowing they were the only two who could've been responsible. Once Al Gui's cronies got to the luggage room by slipping in through the conveyor belts, fight ensued, leaving Kathy strangled with her own uniform scarf, and Kathy fled for her life out a fire evacuation door and disappeared to save her life. Singaporean police found her the prime suspect from her escape, but residue from Jane's autopsy revealed the smuggling. Around when Kathy met a at a drop point for a disguise to keep running, Davis was found and fit more of a profile for being involved in the ring than Kathy and Jane, who fit as coerced accomplices given their life history, so Russ "Monty" Montgomery questions him in America to tip him off into his next move. He indeed places an encrypted call to the ring, who arrange for Kathy to meet one of the lieutenants, Han Bo Sheng. He's found drowned in one of the fish tanks, Kathy being set up as a patsy by being lured right tp the crime scene.

When the IRT finally realizes animals are the smuggled merchandise, Monty goes through Davis' employee and hideouts with a warrant from his phone call and has Davis arrested from evidence gathered, Will being safely rescued from a low-rate warehouse in Baltimore for operations. The hired guns already snatched Kathy during the frame job and took her hostage for getting the fish back. Senior Station Inspector Cheong confirmed an urban legend of Al Gui's operations, so the team worked with armed dispatch to comb through the likely buildings where Kathy was taken hostage. Monty finds signals coming from a penthouse, where Al Gui is demanding the location of the fish from Kathy. She refuses, referring to Jane's murder, and he lies it was an "unfortunate accident", adding he doesn't want to kill her and will release her and Will if she complies. When she brings them to the location, he then admits his lie and orders his men to murder Kathy. The police storm the building in time, shoot one of Al Gui's men, and arrest Al Gui and his other accomplice. Kathy is safely rescued, but due to the charges against her, she's ordered not to talk until diplomacy strikes a dead. She's released and returned to America, under a legal order she never return to Singapore.

Trivia[]

  • Jane Wicks' murder is inspired by the murder of American airline administrator Susan Taraskiewicz, who was found stabbed to death in the truck of her car left at the airline the day her mother went to report her missing. Susan climbed the ranks facing grueling misogynistic harassment, and one day on lunch break, she didn't return with the meals her colleagues said she was getting for them, and they clocked her out. Those same colleagues were arrested for credit card fraud in a collective conspiracy among them, and she was presumed to have been a potential whistleblower. Officially, her killer has never been definitively identified, and there have been no convictions for her violent death as a result.
  • Al Gui is inspired by Andrew Chou Hock Guan, the mastermind of the "Gold Bars triple murders" in Singapore. Guan ordered the murders of a gold bar smuggler and his employees to steal the gold for his own gang's operations.
  • The episode "Cinderella and the Dragon" saw significant criticism from the Singapore Tourism Board, international fans on social media, and even Singaporean law enforcement for its inaccurate portrayal of the country. Its neighborhoods and nation as a whole were criticized as being more dangerous than they are, and the objections against the management of the government were so disparaging that police released their impressive safety stats and told viewers to not trust what they saw on TV. Hong Kong-American actor Tzi Ma, who portrayed Senior Station Inspector Cheong, released a public apology for the country's misrepresentation under which he himself performed a role.
