God, it's too much goddam blood. That's why I strangle.
~ Al Walker after seeing Gareth Pike's body.

Albert "Al" Walker, also known as Rapunzel, is a major antagonist in the Showtime series Dexter: Resurrection. He is a serial killer known as the Rapunzel Killer who strangles women with ponytails.

He was portrayed by Eric Stonestreet who also played Mad Santa in The Santa Clauses and Malcolm Boatwright in The Mentalist.

Biography[]

Al Walker was born on September 5, 1972, in Wisconsin. He grew up with deep-seated issues related to his mother, which later shaped his compulsions. As an adult, he married Bonnie Walker and together they had four children, with his wife pregnant with their youngest, Mabel, during the events that brought him into notoriety. Outwardly, Al presented himself as a cheerful, devoted family man who took pride in his domestic life and professional work, maintaining a friendly and affable demeanor that contrasted sharply with his secret life.

Al became the infamous serial killer known as Rapunzel, targeting women who reminded him of his mother. His method involved feigning injury on bike and hiking paths to lure victims, whom he then strangled before taking their ponytails as trophies. Despite the brutality of his crimes, he remained squeamish around blood, preferring strangulation over more violent methods. Over time, he killed at least 18 women, carefully hiding this aspect of his life while benefiting from the financial support provided by Leon Prater, the wealthy mastermind who organized a group of loyal serial killers, including Al.

Within the group, Al was known for his upbeat personality and the pride he took in his family, which made him a peculiar but respected member among killers. He often displayed admiration and warmth toward the other members, balancing his violent tendencies with genuine camaraderie.

Al’s story diverged from others when he successfully escaped Dexter Morgan. Sensing danger, he left New York for Wisconsin before Dexter could confront him. Unaware of the full threat posed by Dexter, Al managed to evade capture entirely, effectively remaining free while Dexter’s efforts to locate him were thwarted. His ability to disappear without trace cemented his reputation as one of the few serial killers to elude Dexter, preserving his double life as a devoted father and a methodical murderer.

Al continues to live in Wisconsin with his family, maintaining the outward appearance of a loving husband and father while his dark urges remain a carefully concealed part of his life.

However, it's implied that Dexter may still get him: after killing Prater, Dexter takes most of his serial killer files with Al's on top. The detailed file will most likely be able to tell Dexter how to find Al, even in Wisconsin.

Personality[]

In sharp contrast to his status as a serial killer, Al is genuinely polite, friendly, humorous, and somewhat cowardly. He enjoys making friends, forming connections with other people, and is also an avid art lover.

However, none of this changes the fact that Al is an incredibly disturbed individual, as shown by his love of murdering women, specifically those with ponytails who resemble his mother. These violent tendencies are very likely the result of his "mommy issues", as it is heavily implied his mother was abusive towards him and that his urge to kill these specific victims is very likely some kind of coping mechanism to deal with his trauma.

Al shows very little empathy towards his victims, as during the process of claiming one, he simply laughs and doesn't take the process seriously whatsoever. Despite this, he does show a lot of empathy towards his friends and family, as despite staying in Prater's group primarily for financial gain, he appeared to genuinely see the other members as his friends and appeared to be genuinely distraught whenever one of them passed away.

Victims[]

  • 18 Unidentified girls
  • Possibly 18 victims by total.
