Alain Charnier also known by his alias "Frog One" is the main antagonist of the 1971 crime drama film, The French Connection and it's sequel, French Connection II. Charnier is a crime boss, running one of the largest heroin operations in the world.
He was potrayed by the late Fernando Rey.
Biography[]
Alain Charnier was born in Marseille, France in 1917. He was a longshoreman and later fought with The French Resistance during World War II.
The French Connection[]
In Marseille, Alain Charnier is planning to smuggle $32 million of heroin into the US via hiding it in the car of his associate/friend, Henri Devereaux. Charnier travels to New York City to meet with his associate, Salvatore "Sal" Boca. He realizes that he is being watched by Popeye Doyle and Cloudy Russo. Charnier escapes from the deal and Doyle follows him until Charnier successfully escapes from Doyle and gets on the subway. He later asks Boca to meet him in Washington, D.C., though Boca wants to delay the deal to avoid police. Charnier is very impatient and wants to finish the deal as soon as possible. Charnier later drives to an old factory to meet with Boca's lawyer, Joel Weinstock to deliver the heroin. Charnier successfully makes the deal and drives away but is caught by police. Charnier escapes to another factory being chased by Doyle and Russo. Doyle mistakes a shadowy figure for Charnier, and he shoots who he believes is Charnier. It turns out to be Bill Mulderig, an undercover narcotics agent. Charnier successfully escapes the factory and the credits later state that he was never caught.
