~ Albert Barese to Richie Aprile. |
Albert "Ally Boy" Barese is a supporting character in the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He is the nearsighted and slow-mannered cousin of the well-respected DiMeo Crime Family caporegime, Larry Barese who takes over as acting capo when Larry is on trial for racketeering charges. He is also known for repeating words other mobsters have already said, with him being nicknamed as "The Parakeet".
He was portrayed by Richard Maldone.
Biography[]
Albert Barese was born in September of 1962 and was the paternal cousin of Larry Barese, a high-ranking member of the notorious New Jersey Italian-American crime syndicate, the DiMeo Family. Due to his cousin's position, Albert was quickly led into the Mafia lifestyle, as well as being nicknamed "Ally Boy", which most likely came from his cousin's nickname of "Larry Boy". When Larry is put on trial for racketeering charges, however, Albert becomes acting capo of the Barese Crew.
Season 2[]
In the penultimate episode of the second season, Richie Aprile, a sadistic veteran capo asks Albert for support when he comes up with a plan to a make moves against Tony Soprano, the boss of the family, with his hope being that Albert would support him as both of them were rejected when asking Tony for more control of the garbage controls. Albert, however, rejects Richie's offer and when Richie tries to convince Junior Soprano to allow him to kill Tony, Junior gives this information to Tony. However, before Tony can do anything about it, his sister and Richie's fiancée, murders Richie.
Season 3[]
During the third season, Albert and the Barese Crew become participants in the "garbage war" alongside another high-earning member in the family, Ralph Cifaretto. The war was mostly derived from a dispute between control over the garbage routes. Tony was mostly upset about the war due to the family getting into the news due to the various fires caused by them. Eventually, Tony settles the dispute between Ralph, Albert and Gigi Cestone, the current capo of the Aprile Crew. Tony also remarks to them that they should start no more fires from now on. Albert plays another large role when in the penultimate episode of the third season, Albert is playing cards during Eugene Pontecorvo's game, alongside Gene, Christopher Moltisanti, Furio Giunta and the dealer "Sunshine". All of a sudden, a trio of men in ski-masks attempt to rob them but after the lead man murders Sunshine and Christopher kills one of them, the robbery goes south. As the other two run off into the street, it is revealed to Chris and Al that the men were Jackie Jr. and his friends, who were all looking to go up the ranks of the Mafia. As Jackie ditches his friend Dino in the street, Al and Chris corner him and as he begs for forgiveness, the pair shoot him to death.
Season 4[]
In the episode "No Show", Albert's birthday party is hosted at Vesuvio's Italian Restaurant, were Ralphie makes a joke about Ginny Sack's weight, the wife of the underboss of the New York Lupertazzi Crime Family, which, little did he know, would cause the main conflict presented in the fourth season. In the season it also becomes apparent that Al is a man of little words and will mostly agree with and repeat the words spoken by the last person who was talking, with Paulie "Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri, even nicknaming him as "The Parakeet". However despite this, Albert is still known for being a high-earner and is well respected by his fellow mobsters. While at dinner with Patsy Parisi and Silvio Dante, the three discuss Ralphie's sudden disappearance and how they all believe that Tony murdered him over his suspicions of Ralph murdering their racehorse (of which they were all correct). While Albert hated Ralph and claimed that he "wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire", he still felt his death was unjust, with Patsy explaining that his death is a lesson for what line they can or can't cross.
Trivia[]
- It is heavily implied that Albert suffers from Echolalia, a speech impediment causing meaningless repetition.
