| “ | Men... I was just in America... do you know how they deal with striking workers there? Do you know? They shoot them! That is civilization. That is future. That is law and order and that is what we must bring to this place. | „ |
| ~ Fussar's speech to his soldiers. |
| “ | A tyrant, driven by nothing but power and greed. Our only purpose is to work ourselves to death to make him rich. | „ |
| ~ Leon Fuentes about Fussar and his tyranny. |
Colonel Alberto Fussar is a major antagonist in the 2018 western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption II, serving as the main antagonist of the Guarma Chapter.
He is a Cuban Army official who rules over the island of Guarma as its governor, greatly abusing of his power by enslaving the entire population and making them work to death in the sugar plantations he owns and exploits them for his benefits.
He was voiced by Alfredo Narciso in motion capture.
Personality[]
Alberto Fussar is not shown much onscreen, only having brief appearances within the cutscenes and storyline. However, with little we see of Fussar, he is a sadistic, brutal tyrant who enjoys lording over the people of Guarma. He had enslaved the people in Guarma to run his sugar fields, subjectating them to torture and executions under a whim while he goes of enjoying excess of hedonism. He shown to be extremely cruel and ruthless, describing the casual executions of unionizing workers in America as “civilization,” and shows to taunt over Javier, showing some light xenophobia towards his Mexican heritage as he drags him.
Biography[]
Past[]
Little is known about Fussar's past. It is likely that he was born on either Cuba or Guarma, and, judging by the medals on his military uniform, he probably served the Spanish military until the withdrawal of the Spanish against the Americans in 1898. Fussar then rose to the rank of colonel in the Cuban military and for military merit or for some other reason, he was able to become governor of Guarma.
By then, he began a reign of terror and a quasi-military rule, which was convenient for him as his men would kidnap and use as much as people living on the island, political prisoners or anyone that got washed up on the Caribbean land to enslave them in his sugarcane plantations to make him rich. The slaves had nothing in return, left to die from exhaustion, hunger or torture.
Despite his controversial reputation that was even known in the U.S, Fussar built up connections with powerful people, becoming a very close ally of Leviticus Cornwall, an unscrupulous and ruthless business tycoon himself, who described Fussar as “a great friend to America”.
Red Dead Redemption II[]
As a group of people started a rebellion against Fussar's rule and was gaining great support from the population, Fussar had to deal with some members of the Van der Linde gang that arrived on the island after escaping a sinking boat due to a tropical storm : its leader Dutch van der Linde and Arthur Morgan, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella and Micah Bell. Levi Simon, Fussar's right-hand man, accompanied by military officers, found the men and chained them with rebels previously captured. After Simon ordered them to be imprisoned before leaving, other rebels help the group to escape. Their leader, an Haitian pirate named Hercule Fontaine, provides them weapons and a shelter to rest.
Arthur and Dutch are later guided by Gloria through a cave network beneath Aguasdulces to rescue Javier, whom they had to leave behind as he was wounded by the military. Near the sugar factory, Fussar and his men interrogate Javier about his fellow gang members, but he refuse to speak, even under torture. But Fussar eventually discovers their true identity and the large amount of the bounty placed on the gang's heads. He therefore alerts the navy and prepare gun batteries on the shore to stop them from leaving. The gang and Hercule are able to fight back, destroying the batteries and a large warship in the process, allowing them to rescue the ship captain Fontaine provided them to escape the island.
This proves to be the nail in Fussar’s coffin, as the previous battle significantly weakened his army and their resources. Arthur and the gang, along the rebels, later fight their way to the worker's cabin the captain is locked into. Once Arthur manages to break inside, he is tackled by Simon, who ends being held at gunpoint by Dutch before Fussar himself joins the confrontation, who turns into a Mexican standoff. Arthur kicks a rifle over to the captain, who kills Levi with a shot in the chest. Realizing he is near to be defeated, Fussar escapes by jumping off the window. As the gang then begins making their way to the ship, Fussar uses a Gatling gun on the tower to attack them. Knowing they won't be able to set sail while under the colonel's fire, Dutch and Hercule draw Fussar's fire as a distraction so Arthur can sneak to a nearby cannon. Once he reaches it, Arthur fires the cannon at Fussar's tower, destroying it and killing the colonel in the process, ending Fussar’s dictatorship over Guarma. The gang is finally able to escape the island and return on the American continent, while Fontaine and his rebels will depart by the morning.
By 1907, Fussar's sugar plantations were acquired by financier JD McKnight.

Trivia[]
- Alberto Fussar is first seen at a party at the Saint Denis mayor's house where he is pointed out by Angelo Bronte.
- A newspaper article seen in the game's epilogue reveals that Guarma is even worse off after Fussar is killed, as JD McKnight took over the island's sugar industry and caused the island to become totally reliant on American imports, which in turn led to the workers being mistreated even worse than under Fussar.
- Alberto is about 165cm (5'5'' feet) tall and weighs 60kg (132 pounds).
- Fussar’s death showed once again the ignorance and propaganda around rich and influential people at the time. His death indeed received a highly propaganda cover, similar to Leviticus Cornwall’s later in the story. The newspapers described him as a “beloved leader” and for business leaders he was “a kind and effective leader who brought peace and prosperity to the region, supported workers' rights, and took a particular interest in the lot of women on the island.” [1]
- Fussar is very similar to Agustin Allende, another major antagonist from Red Dead Redemption:
- Both have the rank of Colonel and are tyrannical governors of a Spanish speaking land.
- Both serve as the main antagonists of their respective chapters where the protagonist is in a foreign territory.
- Both are oppressing the population they rule over for their own benefit.
- They both share a similar appearance, with similar hair and mustache, and also a similar military uniform.
