“ | Three days before my death, Alcatraz went stealth. But it was still here. It was all around us. It had simply expanded imperceptibly fast. It mimicked the surrounding environment on a subatomic level. Everyone had believed it did not spread to the East Coast yet. But it definitely did. ... Alcatraz had copied us all overnight. Every particle of this country and its citizens, replaced. The United States is the Ship of Theseus. Inside my skull is Alcatraz's reconstruction of my brain. | „ |
~ Former Senior Advisor Leonard W. Morlin, speaking on Alcatraz's doings to the world via the New Delaware Journal |
Alcatraz Island, known simply as Alcatraz, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside GOD) in THE MONUMENT MYTHOS franchise.
Originally the famous prison island, it underwent some paranormal mutation and turned into a giant unicellular organism, only to begin its cataclysmic assault on America, and likely the rest of the world.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Alcatraz initially assumed its original shape, except that the inner architecture of the prison and island began to transform into structures in common with the organisms inside the cells of living organisms, gaining a nucleus and mitochondria, alongside other organelles that allowed it to survive. When it seemingly disappeared, Leonard W. Morlin discovered it actually "went stealth", turning into the contiguous United States (including all of its inhabitants), and likely the entire world, into another copy of itself.
Behavior[]
Alcatraz is an entity of an unknown nature, resembling a cellular organism and behaving like it is cancerous, as it aggressively consumes everything around it with no care whatsoever for anyone or anything, jeopardizing the west coast of the US, and by extension the entire world with its uncontrolled growth. When it eventually made landfall, Alcatraz changed of tactics since it rapidly (possibly instantaneously) assimilated the entire US, by replacing the original country, along with all its inhabitants, with a practically identical, yet reconstructed replica (hence why Morlin dubbed it the "Ship of Theseus"). Since Alcatraz couldn't be stopped, it likely took over the entire world as well, thus replacing the world with an Alcatraz-made replica. Still, in spite of its destructive behavior, there is no evidence of Alcatraz being an actively malicious organism, as opposed to many of the other abominations from the mythos.
Beings infused with Alcatraz matter can also use its heterotrophic absorptive abilities to take over vast swaths of land in a move dubbed "Alcatraz Checkmate", which was used by the Knight to destroy the Lunarians.
Biography[]
Detection and attempted neutralization[]
It is unknown where this biological nature of Alcatraz arose, but when the US government discovered this fact around 1950, through re-mapping the island, they decided to "treat" the island using radiation therapy to kill it off, similar to how cancer is treated.
They took three days to prepare for the irradiation of the island, and during that time they recorded videos of the island's movements. On the day of the actual Radiation Therapy #1, they successfully treat the island, assumedly, shooting a high-powered laser at it. This proves to be futile, though, as a day after this therapy, the island begins going through a process dubbed "Alcatrazosis", a mitosis of Alcatraz Island, and the documentation shows that the process already happened twice, with three islands in view.
Taking over the world[]
After this failed attempt, the US government retreated, and decided instead to predict and chart the movements of the islands over one hundred years, and their predictions are startling. They predicted that the island(s) would take fifty years to travel to the Californian coast, and will henceforth begin eating the US coast for sustenance, leaving a barren ocean wasteland full of islands that will absorb anyone who comes near it. The islands actually landed in 2003, 53 years later, with the event later being called “The 2003 Alcatraz Attack.” The area affected was dubbed the "Alcatraz Zone", and by 2020, this zone has reached West Texas, caused by the payload dropped near Alcatraz by the Air Force One Angel.
When Alcatraz lands on the West Coast, unlike the predictions made by the US government, the island dematerializes and spreads its matter throughout the entire world, somehow copying and replacing all matter on the planet with the infected matter. This fact is discovered and reported to the world by Leonard W. Morlin via his frequently censored one-man news operation "Delaware River Journal." His research over several days reveals that all matter is somehow affected by the island down to the elementary particles of matter. Leonard then goes on to say he will kill himself due to now being a creation of the island, specifically through lighting himself on fire, as he specifies it's a particularly effective manner of death. He specifically sends out a message via Cthonaut A. (an explorer of The Horned Serpent Metastructure) to the Nixonverse in which the Special Trees connect, stating that said cthonaut will deliver information in a theatrical manner about the soon-to-be-defunct universe to that one. He reveals that the two universes aren't temporally synchronized, with the Cthonaut being sent on February 22nd, 2022, and arriving in the other universe on October 1st, 2016. Cthonaut A., later taking the moniker “ALEXKANSAS”, and then “MR. MANTICORE”, presents the information through Seasons 1 and 2 of THE MONUMENT MYTHOS.
Legacy[]
With the release of the Horned Serpent and the destruction of the world that ensued, Alcatraz was presumably destroyed, though it did live through Richard Nixon, who somehow got imbued with Alcatraz's leftovers, allowing him to defeat the Serpent and landed in another universe, dubbed the Nixonverse. Nixon, now known as GOD, resided on the Moon and created three beings, that are the Son, the Knight, and the Queen of the Lunarians, to see how they would interact with humanity. However, the experiment turned sour, as the Lunarians declared war on humanity following an attempt on the Queen's life by an astronaut. The Son was initially uninvolved but was forced to join the Lunarians after they brainwashed him, turning him into the Crescent King (not to be confused with the Crescent King of the House in the Ocean), while the Knight sided with humanity.
Although the Lunarians were initially winning, after he was approached by the Queen of The Lunarians and offered to join her kingdom as Prince, the Knight used what appears to be leftover matter from Alcatraz to completely destroy the Lunarian race and stop their invasion once and for all. However, the Son was still alive and, wracked with pain and grief, began to morph into the Horned Serpent. Fearing that a fight between the Son and the Knight would end in another Great Division, Nixon decided to fictionalize his universe, including himself, thereby ending the Nixonverse and Alcatraz's legacy on the same occasion.

Trivia[]
- The entire idea behind Alcatraz is likely based on a pun, since Alcatraz holds prison cells.
