Dr. Aldo Betti is a major antagonist in the 1974 giallo film Five Women for the Killer. Betti is a salacious, domineering, narcissistic chief doctor of an Italian hospital, in an extramarital affair that turns into more than he bargain for when gambling with his reputation and life.

He was portrayed by the late Giorgio Albertazzi.

Biography[]

Betti was the chief administrator of a medical center in Italy, as well as egotistical and having a consistent sexual affair with one of his nurses, Sofia, despite his already present marriage. His wife knew about the affair and was embittered, but she didn't fight hard to stop the affair and kept a tense impasse between herself and Betti to use to her own leverage. When women who went to the hospital for pregnancy tests and came back positive started being sickly mutilated to death, Betti was questioned repeatedly by police about his hospital, their procedures, and the ties to the killings. Betti was cocky, denied his involvement, and insisted only on enough cooperation that kept the integrity of his position and the reputation of the hospital.

During one extremely intense night of sex and gratification with Sofia, Betti said he was done with her. Not wanting to take that lying down and save her dignity, Sofia not only threatened to try and spread the news of his affair around, but also said she was pregnant, which was really a lie. She even personally called Betti's wife to reinforce her threats, and when the message was passed along, Betti just muttered "bitch" and contemplated what retort he could use. As the killings were still in full swing, Betti ensured he'd don a disguise like the killer, placed a silent harassing phone call to Sofia, and broke into her apartment when she was near getting into the shower. Completely naked, Sofia was surprised by Betti, cut in her chest and back with a knife, and killed like the other women who were murdered: eviscerated alive to the point her womb was shredded by the blade, a women's fertility and gender symbol cut into her breast.

The killer was revealed to be one of the gynecologists at the hospital, Dr. Lidia Franzi. She was in love with her colleague, Dr. Giorgio Pisani, and killed his wife to be with him and other pregnant women out of jealousy because Franzi was sterile. When Franzi was arrested after nearly killing his girlfriend Alba and his son with Erica using a hatchet, Dr. Pisani and the inspector discussed how they found out she was the killer. Dr. Betti was called to Dr. Pisani's cottage to discuss the case, where he was confronted with the anomaly that Sofia wasn't pregnant. The inspector then sais he knew about the affair and that Betti killed Sofia in an attempt to try and frame Franzi so he'd escape suspicion. When Betti tried to scoff it away, the inspector placed the bloody gloves he wore when he killed Sofia on the coffee table. His wife proudly came in and stated he didn't care to hide them in his own house with how untouchable he felt. Betti stood up, glaring at his wife, and snarled "you filthy whore". He was arrested, and his crimes made front page news.
