~ Sosa to Tony Montana when the latter betrays him. |
Alejandro Sosa is the main antagonist of the 1983 epic crime drama film Scarface.
He is a powerful international drug lord at Bolivia and Tony Montana's former friend up until the latter betrayed him. He at first has a good business relationship with Tony, but once Tony refuses to carry out a task Alejandro gives to him, Sosa cuts off ties with him.
In the film, he was portrayed by the late Paul Shenar, who also played Jenner in Don Bluth's The Secret of NIMH.
Personality[]
Sosa is a highly intelligent individual who managed to build a veritable drug empire thanks to his privileged upbringing in Europe. He is very careful with who he deals with, killing Omar after discovering he was an informant, and showing his body to warn Tony Montana never to betray him in the same way. This shows that Sosa is very careful with every decision he makes, but that he can also be cruel and violent with just a single order.
Still, Sosa seems to respect those who, like him, have an open mind for business and opportunities. He prefers to let others speak first, studying their overtures, speech, and mannerisms. Either way, Sosa is none the less a ruthless crime boss who kills anyone who gets between him and his business, considering he sends an entire death squad to murder Tony in Miami.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Not much is known about Sosa's past except that he is Bolivian, his father was a drug kingpin and that in his youth, he was educated in England and at some time in his life, got happily married.
Scarface[]
Sosa is first seen in Bolivia giving career criminals Tony Montana and his associate Omar Suarez a tour of his drug factory. It turns out he could have talked to their drug boss Frank Lopez in person, but with his trial going on, he sends Tony and Omar to go to Sosa. While having lunch in his mansion, Tony makes a dangerous risk to Sosa, something neither Frank nor Omar would want. The latter and Tony argue about this as Sosa gets a phone call. Afterwards, he offers Omar a ride back to Miami by helicopter. Then, Sosa reveals to Tony that Omar is a police informant responsible for sending gang members to jail. Therefore, a helicopter ride from Sosa is a trap to get him killed. As Omar is hanged from the helicopter, Sosa reveals his disdain towards Frank and wants Tony to work with him. Tony agrees, further earning Sosa's respect by stating that he never trusted Omar to begin with in the first place. The meeting ends with Sosa agreeing to his partnership with Tony. However, he has one condition: do not betray him.
Three years later, when Tony (who now has built a multi-million-dollar empire) is sent to jail for tax evasion, Sosa invites him again to Bolivia to help him. He introduces him to more of his friends, including a high-ranking Bolivian military official and an important person from Washington D.C.. It turns out they have a problem and working together will be the solution. Sosa shows Tony a video of a journalist revealing Sosa’s shady dealings to the entire world. He needed him to be killed to prevent this action from happening. Tony reluctantly agrees to do the job along with Alberto the Shadow, Sosa's bomber who is slated to blow up the car while Tony drives the pursuing vehicle. If Tony does the task, Sosa will use his government connections to give him immunity from going to jail.
However, on the selected day in New York City, when the journalist departed from a hotel in which he had a conference, Tony and his allies discovered that the activist was going to be accompanied by his wife and his children. Nevertheless, Alberto was still determinant to kill the journalist anyway. Tony, not wanting to kill the journalist's wife and children, calls off the mission and executes Alberto with a shot the head, double-crossing Sosa in the process. Sosa later called Tony after this to inform him that the bomb was discovered under the journalist's car and now he was being protected much more. Furious, Sosa decides to send his henchmen after Tony but not before reminding Tony of the warning he previously gave to him about not betraying him.
Eventually, Sosa send his henchmen in order to get revenge for the sabotage. Although they managed to execute Montana's security and Montana's sister Gina, Tony was able to kill many of them. However, The Skull, one of Sosa's assassins, ultimately and fatally shot Tony in the back, killing him and avenging his betrayal. It's completely unknown what happened to Sosa after this, but it could be possible that the corrupt Bolivian government officials and flag officers ultimately revealed the story which had the possibility to have Sosa executed in the electric chair. If that did not happen, however, Sosa most likely resumed his operations at Bolivia from that point onwards.

PAYDAY 2[]
In PAYDAY 2, the gang visits Miami to take out Sosa's nephew Ernesto Sosa and his cartel after Ernesto ordered an ambush on The Butcher’s weapons smuggling operations in Central America. The Butcher, wanting revenge, orders Dallas & his crew to raid and murder Sosa in Tony Montana's mansion.
Trivia[]
- Unlike Tony Montana, Alejandro Sosa never uses drugs nor has any standards, making him a more effective and ruthless drug lord.
- Ironically, his video game version is much worse than the film version, as Alejandro in Scarface: The World is Yours did not cared about children and was about to deploy the military in Miami to kill Montana, regardless of casualties, while in the film version, Alejandro was not aware that the journalist had brought his wife and children with him (although Tony never explained this to Alejandro due to his coke-induced rage that prevented him from being able to think clearly), and his reaction to the journalist having brought his wife and children was never shown. Also, while Alejandro does mention to Tony that he has a wife, she was never seen onscreen at all and his marital status with his unseen wife remains a mystery.
- However, his video game counterpart held back of his resources, which makes him less lethal despite being incredibly dangerous.
