Aleph is the main antagonist of the 2023 monster-collector video game Cassette Beasts. He is an eldritch being called an Archangel who is the concept of conquest incarnate. He has traveled throughout the multiverse as the leader of a troop of Archangels conquering, subjugating, and breaking many worlds, which he sees as his "playthings". He has been stuck on New Wirral, the island between worlds that is the video game's setting, for an unknown length of time prior to the events of the game. He started capturing Archangels once the protagonist and their partners weakened them, assembling them as a team to help him once again go on a reign of terror.

He was voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.

Appearance[]

Aleph has a humanoid form, appearing as a man wearing a large red, blue, white, and tan outfit with a long collar and white gloves, resembling a military uniform. His head is a floating flat glowing triangular mirror that spins in circles. This Archangel sometimes carries a wooden-looking staff with a golden spherical head. He is most often seen floating in a standing position.

Unlike most other Archangels, who take forms with various art styles contrasting and out of place with the game's main art style, Aleph appears as a normal pixel art sprite like all non-Archangel characters in the game. The exception is his floating, spinning, triangular head, which is a 3D model. However, his appearances are accompanied by a frequent glitchy screen-tearing effect, contributing to his air of otherworldliness.

As Aleph Null, he appears as a chaotic-looking combination of the body parts of him and all the other Archangels he fused with.

Personality[]

Aleph introduces himself with a courteous and affable facade, asking for a "proper talk" with the player character and apologizing when he believes he might have spoken to them too loud. When the player character mentions a desire to leave New Wirral, he initially promises that, but the world he takes the player to is not their home world. Instead, they were taken to a dead dimension that had been destroyed by Aleph. They were stranded and left to die, but luckily, the interdimensional-travelling Amber Lodge had stopped by and transports them back to New Wirral.

When Aleph encounters the protagonist's group at Night's Bridge Station, he continues his civil, polite tone, but no one is fooled by it. He is revealed to be very sadistic and revels in the mayhem and suffering he causes.

He is not above bargaining, as he tries to make a deal with the group to let him leave New Wirral without a fight, and in turn he would spare their respective worlds. When they reject this offer, he quickly changes his mind and decides it would be very enjoyable to manipulate, conquer, and destroy those dimensions first.

As the protagonist's team stays strong and fights Aleph in battle for a while, he breaks his calm persona to show frustration and anger at them for not giving up.

He rationalizes himself and his actions by saying that people are hypocritical and contradictory for creating him yet now trying to destroy him. He also says that humanity's greatest wish is to destroy itself, and that he helps realize that goal. However, Aleph is clearly making up excuses that he is not genuinely motivated by.
