Alex's Droogs are the secondary antagonists of the 1962 novel and 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. They were a group of violent young men led by Alex. They all spoke in Nadsat, a form of English containing Russian and Early Modern English terms and phrases.

Alex was portrayed by Malcolm McDowell, Dim was portrayed by Warren Clarke, Georgie was portrayed by James Marcus, and Pete was portrayed by Michael Tarn.

Biographies[]

Clock09

Alex about to reassert his dominance.

In both the novel and the film, the Droogs were first introduced sitting at the Korova milkbar and intoxicating themselves with "milk-plus" (milk that contains drugs such as LSD, synthetic mescaline, or adrenochrome) to sharpen them up for an evening of ultra-violence.

The men started their evening by beating up an old tramp. Next, they had a brief fight with Billy Boy and his gang and quickly defeated them. They then stole a car and tried to run other cars and pedestrians off the road. Finally, they came to the house of Mr. Alexander (a writer) where they beat him and raped his wife in front of him. After expressing discontent at Alex's petty crimes and for the events from the night before, the droogs demanded that Alex give them more equal standing within the group. Later, while Alex and the droogs walked beside the flatblock marina (Binsey Walk), Alex attacked and threw Georgie and Dim into the canal and Alex reasserts his leadership (much to the droogs' annoyance). That night, Alex broke into the mansion of a wealthy old woman and even attacked the woman with a phallic statue in self defense. The police sirens are heard, and the droogs that were standing at the front door waiting for Alex then betrayed him with Dim smashing a milkbottle in his face and leaving the stunned and bleeding Alex in the hands of the police.

Members[]

Georgie and Dim[]

Georgie and Dim

Georgie (James Marcus) & Dim (Warren Clarke).

Georgie and Dim were the oldest members of the gang and seemed to be very close to each other. Georgie was Alex's second-in-command, though attempted to undermine Alex's status as leader. Georgie was outspoken, ambitious, and somewhat greedy. In the film, he wielded a shillelagh (a type of Irish walking stick) that he used as a club. In the book, he wields a nozh (knife).

Dim was a slow-witted brute but was well respected by the gang for his muscle strength and fighting abilities. Dim wielded a long chain length that he carried on his waist as a weapon.

George and Dim 1

Officer George and Officer Dimitri.

In the novel, Georgie was killed in a botched robbery some time during Alex's imprisonment. In the film, Georgie (replacing Billy Boy) and Dim become police officers. After unknowingly rescuing Alex from a group of tramps, the two men figured out his identity, deciding to exact revenge on Alex for everything he put them through, taking Alex outside of town and half-drowning him in an animal trough while beating him with their blackjacks.

Pete[]

Pete was the youngest member of the gang next to Alex. In the film, he wielded a shillelagh as a club, as did Alex and Georgie. In the novel, he wielded a nozh (knife), as with Georgie. He spoke very little, usually only speaking when agreeing with his fellow droogs, though he occasionally spoke up and tried to reason with them. He was the most rational and least violent of the group, though was still willing to indulge in the group's ultraviolence.

He didn't take any sides with any of the other droogs and stays out of it whenever they fight amongst themselves.

Pete played a major part in the final chapter of the novel where he was happily married to a young woman named Georgina. He later met up with Alex and told him that he should think about starting a family and blend in with the rest of society as a normal citizen. However, in the film adaptation, for some reason, after Alex is released from prison, Pete is never seen or mentioned. Although his fate was the same as in the novel, giving up his violent ways and trying blend in with society, it is never confirmed.

Trivia[]

  • In the novel, Alex gets three new droogs named Len, Rick, and Bully. Bully got his name from his fat neck and low thick voice that made him sound like a bull, while Rick had the face of a frog.
  • The names of the four droogs are of both Greek and Russian origin and are seemingly named for various great Greek, English and Russian leaders. Alex's name is short for Alexander which ironically means "Defender of mankind" and may be referencing Alexander The Great or the three Alexanders who where the Tsars of Russia. Georgie's name is a form of George, "Farmer or Earth Worker", and may be referencing Saint George of Lydda or the six Georges who were Kings of England. Dim's name may be a short form of Dimitri or Demitrius, "Follower of Demeter", and could be referencing Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, who was a Christian martyr. Pete's name is short for Peter, "Rock", and could be referencing Saint Peter, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ or Peter The Great of Russia.
  • Alex and his droogs made cameo appearances in the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy along with many other Warner Bros-characters. Their inclusion has been considered strange to say the least considering the fact that they are in a family-friendly film, and even hypocritical, as Pepé Le Pew was removed from the film even for a very brief cameo after a controversy from a vocal minority alleging that he supposedly promoted "rape culture", when Pepé was at his worst a naive and oblivious stalker whereas the droogs are actual deliberate serial rapists.
