Biography[]

Alex first appears when Jane Mathis, a therapist who was attacked and slashed by a suicidal, abused patient, Nora Green, after confronting her abuser, her patient's father, starts taking patients again, despite her own therapist's advice and her own reluctance to see Alex specifically. Alex appears with severe scar tissue on his face from needing full reconstruction and grafting. He conveys to her that his daughter died in an accident and he was hideously disfigured trying to save her from his car before a truck collided with it and killed her, after he was helping a couple with their broken down car. With the grief haunting him ever since, Mathis shares her own experience and the mixed regret and grudges she has after the attempt on her life by Nora to share sympathy with him. She doesn't prescribe medicine, however, as she believes leaning on that is what led to Nora's breakdown, and when Alex is seen in her home sleepwalking, she calls dispatch officers to remove him. He begs her to continue the sessions, insisting she understands and is an expert at what she does in the hope she can help him.

During this time, Mathis goes to see Nora at the institution, only to find she's been kicked out from her father dying and insurance no longer paying for her stay. Footage shows when she speaks about her father, she breaks down in psychotic rages. Mathis becomes confused and terrified seeing blood in her house in footprints and on photographs, as well as hours of footage missing from her security cameras she installed after Nora's discharge, which her police officer boyfriend Miles Richardson discovers. She refused to charge Nora, as she doesn't want her condition compromised even more from excessive drugs. Alex appears later despite all of Mathis' patients being cancelled, Mathis clarifying there needs to be safety guidelines between them for sake of treatment.

After taking drugs she stole from her therapist, Terry Drummond, when she was running low, she relives her attack in an episode of sleep paralysis. When she wakes up incoherent, she sees Nora attacking her, so Mathis grabs and nearby corkscrew and stabs and kills the image of Nora she sees. But she passes out and wakes up institutionalized under heavy sedation, camera footage revealing she killed Richardson instead while drugged. Mathis soon sees Nora hanged outside her room from a tree, and after her friend Clara visits, she's tazed and abducted. Her doctor comes back accusing her of driving Nora to suicide when she's found dead as well. Despite the fact Nora said she killed her abusive father, apparently the bills were still being paid for her hospitalization. Putting pieces together from Nora's treatment and Alex's accounts, Mathis realizes Alex is Nora's father, having deceived all along and likely set her up to be incriminated. She escapes the institution to exonerate herself, but this is short-lived freedom when she's also tazed unconscious and taken away.

She wakes up in her home held hostage by Alex. He admits the truth, that he's Nora's daughter and he faked the accident for the sake of a newly grafted face to hide his identity and that Nora maimed him in self-defense. His entire plan was meant to get revenge on Mathis for trying to save Nora from him, from forcing Nora to break into Mathis' house when he stopped paying for her to get her out, to Nora switching Mathis' stolen drugs so she'd kill Richardson in a psychotic drug episode. During her captivity, she sees Clara and Drummond both dead, and when she tries to escape out a window, Alex pulls her back in. She fights him off enough he gets weaker in trying to kill her, and as a final coup de grace, she grabs his face and pulls the grafts off, just as she plummets out of the house. She stumbles back inside in shock, and when she goes into her living room, she sees Alex dead, missing his entire face.
