Alexander Chau and Ophelia Chau are minor antagonists in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
They are the previous rulers of the Fox Territory, being the parents of Juliet Chau and Gaius Chau, with Alexander having passed his position of Baron down to his daughter. Their main resource in their territory is the Cog slave trade, being known for their cruel and merciless methods of both ruling their territory and raising their children.
Alexander was portrayed by Hon Ping Tang and Ophelia was portrayed by Liz Sutherland.
Personality[]
Alexander and Ophelia are both shown to have an incredibly ruthless mindset when it comes to ruling their territory, something that they aggressively push onto their children. They are never actually depicted abusing their children, instead trying to make them as cruel and sadistic as they are. As the Baron and Baroness of Cogs, they are the main proprietor of the slave trade, and thus do not see them as anything other than cargo, rather than actual human beings. When Ophelia is confronted by Tilda on everything she's done, Ophelia is briefly taken aback by this, but quickly pushes any regret down, saying the weak deserve to die, displaying cognitive dissonance.
Biography[]
Descended from Horatio Chau, Alexander inherited his Barony over the Fox Territory. At some point, he married Ophelia, and the two would have several daughters including Juliet and one son named Gaius. During Gaius' 13th birthday party, a Cog slave girl named Minerva whom Gaius had a secret romance with accidentally dropped a tray of glasses, and Alexander ordered Gaius to give her ten lashes as punishment. Gaius refused to do so, so Alexander had Juliet do it instead, and had Minerva locked in the pig box afterwards. Due to Gaius being benevolent unlike his family members, Alexander and Ophelia decided to not make him the heir to the family, and instead give the title to one of their daughters. They had their daughters start at the bottom as Colts, and work their way up, with the strongest becoming their heir. Juliet would show herself to be the strongest, and would become her fathers heir after his eventual death. Years later, Minerva would become a Baron herself named the Widow, and would start a war with Juliet. Gaius and the Widow's adoptive daughter Tilda confront Ophelia, as they are looking for Juliet's location after she goes into hiding. When Ophelia refuses to tell them of Juliet's location, Gaius threatens her at swordpoint, prompting Ophelia to tell him to kill her, and not back down. Gaius cannot bring himself to kill his mother, and is then informed of his sisters location by his half-brother Deagan. Gaius and Deagan then exit the room, at which point Tilda brutally kills Ophelia by stabbing her several times in her smokers hole.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Leadership: Alexander and Ophelia would have been highly capable leaders due to the Fox Territory being the second most powerful territory behind the Armadillo territory.
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: As a Baron, Alexander would have been proficient in combat. It is unknown if Ophelia shared this skill.
Trivia[]
- Deagan is stated to be the half-brother of Gaius, implying that either Alexander had other wives or Ophelia had another partner following Alexander's death.
