Alexander is a towering mechanical primal in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced during the Heavensward expansion. Unlike most primals born of faith or elemental worship, Alexander was summoned through technology and the desire to control time and reality. It was created and activated by the goblin faction known as the Illuminati, who intended to use it to construct a rational utopia by reshaping the fabric of the world itself.
Stationed in the Dravanian Hinterlands, the primal emerged from the depths of the Thaliak River and became the stage for a sprawling raid series where adventurers confront its inner workings and time-twisting anomalies.
History[]
Alexander was originally summoned in a failed attempt by Mide and the Hotgo tribe three years prior to the events of Heavensward. The attempt led to disaster, as the primal consumed her partner Dayan's soul. In the present, the Illuminati, led by Quickthinx Allthoughts, sought to complete what the Hotgo began.
With the help of a goblin girl named Roundrox, who possessed the Enigma Codex, the Illuminati reactivated Alexander and began using its powers to alter history. The primal’s vast internal systems—Gordias, Midas, and The Creator—functioned like engines of causality, each manipulating time, gravity, and aether.
The Warrior of Light and allies launched a series of incursions into Alexander’s interior, confronting its defenses and temporal anomalies. Ultimately, Mide sacrificed herself to join Dayan's essence and halt the machine's advance through time, sealing it and ending the Illuminati’s ambitions.
Abilities[]
Alexander is capable of:
- Temporal Manipulation – altering the flow of time, reversing actions, and creating paradoxes.
- Spatial Engineering – his interior is a self-contained world with environments and constructs that obey his own rules of physics.
- Aether Consumption – a drain on the environment and threat to local life.
- Holy Magic – drawing on divine-like energy, especially in his Alexander Prime form.
Alexander is divided into three major operational sectors: Gordias, Midas, and The Creator, each with distinct functions and guardians.
Trivia[]
- Alexander's appearance is heavily inspired by previous Final Fantasy entries, where he often manifests as a holy-elemental fortress or summon.
- The sectors Gordias, Midas, and The Creator reference mythical or historical figures associated with power, ambition, and invention.
- The Alexander raid series culminated in the Epic of Alexander (Ultimate) trial, one of the most difficult boss fights in Final Fantasy XIV.
- Alexander’s internal structure is so vast that it forms the setting for all the raid encounters, blending mechanical horror with divine architecture.
- Unlike most primals, Alexander's sentience is philosophical and deterministic, creating simulations of future and past timelines to "prove" the necessity of his rule.
