Alfred Cahill is the main antagonist of the first season Highlander: The Series episode "Avenging Angel".
He was portrayed by Martin Kemp, who also played Steve Owen in EastEnders.
Biography[]
Alfred Cahill was an Immortal born in the mid 20th century. His stepfather was strictly religious and repeatedly beat Cahill until Cahill killed him, which could never be proven. He joined the Royal Air Force and was seconded to the SAS, serving in the Falklands and the Gulf War, but was discharged after failing a psychological assessment.
In 1993, Cahill was in Paris and attempted to hire the services of a prostitute, Claudine, in a bar. He told her about being a war hero and was incensed when she was dismissive and implied he was lying. As he became aggressive, her pimp, Dominique Battini, tried to have him thrown out, but Cahill easily overpowered Battini's thugs and the other men present before turning on Claudine, who stabbed him. Cahill staggered from the building towards an ancient Templar headquarters, fatally injured. He rose from his first death to find Duncan MacLeod standing over him, having seen what was happening and followed him. Cahill believed his survival was a miracle and called Duncan the Archangel Gabriel, running off before Duncan could explain anything.
Cahill first tracked down Claudine, killing first her chauffeur and then her. He took Claudine's address book and went to the apartment of one of her colleagues, Elaine Trent, killing Charles Bagnot, a client he saw leaving. He then set up stall on the street, loudly declaring that he had been born again to punish sinners. Duncan found him and tried to explain to him about Immortals and the Gathering but Cahill refused to listen to him, insisting he couldn't die. They were attacked by a pair of Battini's thugs, with Cahill fleeing while Duncan thought them off. Cahill went back to Elaine's apartment and killed Battini when he turned up.
Now convinced that Duncan was his enemy and believing himself to be the reincarnation of Templar Jacques de Molay, Cahill went to his barge and encountered his girlfriend Tessa Noël, calling her MacLeod's whore and threatening to kill her. Tessa managed to convince him to leave her by telling him that God had spoken to her and told her he was coming to save her, and Cahill left her alone, unharmed to look for Duncan.
Cahill returned to the Templar headquarters, dressing himself in a Templar uniform and arming himself with an axe. Duncan tracked him down and the two men fought. Cahill put up a fight, using a mace and sword as well, but Duncan ran him through with his sword. Cahill continued to insist he couldn't be killed, right up until Duncan beheaded him.
Trivia[]
- Cahill was the first Immortal to be seen reviving from his first death in the present day, seemingly contradicting the idea that Immortals were being whittled down by the Gathering.
- There is a theory that the lost Quickenings caused by the Hunters caused the pull to the Gathering to become weaker.
- Fans have long debated over whether the Templar museum where Duncan took Cahill's head still counted as Holy Ground or not.
- It is safe to say it is not.
