~ Alfred Grifter after killing his entire audience. |
Alfred Grifter is a minor of the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives, serving as the main antagonist of Mag 42: Grifter's Bone. He was apparently initially a mediocre musician who turned to a supernatural force for talent and fame. Through this, he was granted the ability to play music so beautiful it would throw his audience into a violent and murderous insanity. Along with his band, "Grifter's Bone", he would enter other band's concerts and play, usually resulting in his audience winding up dead or horribly scarred for life.
Appearance[]
Alfred was a short man, and very thin. He had black hair that was slicked back and apparently a cruel look about him. He wore a long brown coat.
Personality[]
Grifter is described as a cruel looking man and seemed to be sadistic on some level. He was entirely devoid of empathy and found driving his audience insane somewhat amusing and not being phased by it in the slightest. At some point, he was hungry for fame, although that seems to have faded over time.
Biography[]
Alfred Grifter origin only exists in an ever-changing musical urban legend, but generally, it is agreed that he was once a mediocre musician who desired fame. With this goal in mind, he turned to supernatural forces which (contrary most retellings of the legend) worked, and he gained the ability to play unimaginably beautiful music. The only drawback was that anyone who heard the music would fly into a violent rage, usually resulting in his audiences all dying. Grifter began to sneak into clubs after other bands had played and playing for their audiences, killing most of them.
Sometime later, Alfred read an article about the urban legend that had spread around his band. He commented on it, saying that he'd be playing in Soho, and not to bring earplugs. In a jazz club in Soho, he and his band played, driving all who listened insane, as per usual.
Powers and Abilities[]
After making a dealing with the supernatural, Grifter gained the ability to play his instrument (implied to be a keyboard) impossibly well. It drove those who listened insane, although it is unclear whether he considered this a drawback or a benefit. He also seemed to have the ability to avoid detection, and potentially other supernatural powers.
Trivia[]
- Alfred Grifter is strongly implied to be an avatar of the Slaughter, who would be the supernatural entity who gave him his power.
- There is a possible "origin story" to for Alfred Grifter in the spin-off series, The Magnus Protocol There a violinist gained a supernatural violin that consumed his blood and flesh as he played, but produced more beautiful music as a result, and when played with protection for his hands, the violin caused the audience to slaughter each other. Lee, who survived seeing "Grifter's Bone" perform live, mentions that he saw Alfred Grifter leaving red spots where he touched his keyboard, indicating that he too is fueling his music with blood.
