Alice is the villainous main protagonist of the 2020 indie horror RPG by Michaela Thisten The Well Speaks to Me, the first game of the larger universe that the developer created. Initially a seemingly unassuming cheerful girl who tries her best doing her chores at her home located in the forest for the next 6 to 7 days as her family mysteriously died at first, Alice is revealed to be a mentally-unstable psychopath who express her horrifying sadism after murdering her own family and several innocent people that went to the forest and drowning some of their bodies in the well at her house once the graveyard besides her house doesn't fit anymore. As the days went on, Alice's sanity began to slip further and further. In addition of her sanity slippage, the home that she inhabited in the forest also experiencing supernatural occurrences.
Appearance[]
Alice has the appearance of a stereotypical schoolgirl beyond some oddities. With unkempt, long, blond hair, red eyes, and a sharp chin, she wears a standard school uniform, albeit one with a different color scheme of a dark purple dress, a red and white scarf, and white shoes.
Notably, as her sanity begins to shatter throughout the game, her face tends to change to reflect this change within her, such an as wide, blank eyes staring off into the distance, large, asymmetrical eyes with black pupils and a seemingly lamprey-like mouth oozing an unknown black fluid, and a green, zombie-like mouth with bloodshot eyes.
Personality[]
Initially, Alice was portrayed as a cheerful yet unassuming girl who tries her best to do several normal chores in order to survive living alone in the forest after her family seemingly died under the mysterious circumstances. However, as the days goes by, Alice's psychotic tendencies began to sip through the cracks, as it was revealed that she was a mentally unstable psychopath who took pleasure of brutally murdering her own family and other people that visited her while throwing some of their bodies into the well when the grave near her house is full. Her odd behavior was foreshadowed earlier in the game where she checked her bookshelf in the living room during the first day about a twisted story of Jack and Jill where Jill pushed Jack into the well with sickening satisfaction in her face. Another thing that was foreshadowed is how she reacted with other things such as making sure that the water doesn't get contaminated when she tries to get the water from the well during the first day.
Her sadistic tendencies are also highly notable, as it's not only limited to her own family and the people that she murdered, it also applies towards her reaction to animals such as rats, as Alice shows a satisfaction of a rat's corpse began to fester during the third day. In addition, when she reads a twisted version of Pinocchio during the second to last day, where a Pinocchio made out of the corpse of Geppetto's son devours his creator, Alice was rather disappointed to see that the page is torn because it was near the best part according to her. Not only the later days make her a lot more sadistic as usual, she is also grown to be resentful especially towards her own family and her will to live, with the latter being shown during Day 5, where she mutters about how she became sick and tired of doing all the chores and also expressing her dissatisfaction of being alive. Her displeasure of being alive can be shown in her expressing her desire to commit suicide when she went to the shed during the second to last day. Other than expressing her desire to commit suicide that shows her dissatisfaction of living, her nihilistic behavior can be shown where she mutters to herself that she wanted to make a rope in her shed into a noose or trying to stick her head into the livewires to end it all. It was also shown that Alice herself developed a huge hatred and sensitivity with noises, which is one of the motivations for killing her family and other innocent people. Eventually, thanks to the noises that annoyed her to the very end and her hearing whispers telling her to become the thirteenth body of the well, Alice then commits suicide by jumping in the well, unable to take the pressure anymore.
Despite her insanity, it can be possibly interpreted that she is seemingly remorseful on her last moments, saying that it was too late to repent when trying to go to sleep during the last day. However, it can also be theorized that she is unable to take the pressure anymore and being scared as the spirits are taking revenge against her to make her commit suicide in the end. It was also possibly theorized that the insanity Alice has is due to the fact that she developed some kind of a mental illness known as Misophonia, which is a phobia of sounds made by human beings which can cause people to be angry considering her motivation of murder is due to her being resentful towards her family as they were being noisy when they were around. However, it can be theorized that she is in some form connected to skinwalkers, as they mimic the voices of the victim to lure their potential victim--by whispering several noises in her ears which causes her to go mad and eventually kill herself. Another theory for her insanity is that she is one of the victims of the experiments an unknown organization had performed after making a pact with the demons due to the fact that her house suddenly looks like an abandoned factory during Day 6, implying that the house is one of the Thirteenth Wards for the unknown faction to commit inhumane experiments on innocent people, Alice possibly included.
Biography[]
During the earlier days of the game, Alice is portrayed as a seemingly cheerful girl trying to do her chores in order to survive the forest all by herself ever since her family seemingly died in mysterious circumstances. The chores that were marked in yellow changed everyday as the days went by with the other two chores remaining the same, those being turning on the generator in the basement and taking the water from the well. After doing all of her chores, she will go to bed. However, as the days went by, supernatural occurrences happened in her house, as she hears a strange noises in the well during the second day when trying to take a water from there, how she ended up experiencing a power shortage during the third day after activating the generator which causes her to reactivate the generator again and how a monster began to watch her outside her house during the third day. In addition of the supernatural occurrences, Alice's psychopathy suddenly began to sip through the cracks, as it can be shown when she expresses somewhat of a satisfaction of a rat's corpse festering in the washing bucket, muttering about how it's hard to chop wood compared to meat and how she ignores the water quality during the third day after taking it from the well. In addition to all of this, it was also revealed that Alice is also slightly uncomfortable with several noises in her home such as the noise from the refrigerator motor, the sound of the drain that reminds her of people and the noises from the walls.
However, as the story hits the fourth day, the scenery was seemingly getting back to normal at first glance. However, upon further inspection, Alice suddenly become a lot more hateful and sadistic, claiming that she hates her mother and being glad that she's gone when checking her picture and sadistically reminiscing about how she tortured some people named Rachel and Jeremy before murdering them. In addition, the quality of the water when she took them from the well suddenly became a lot more murky and the vegetables in her house started to rot. As the time went by, the supernatural occurrences, Alice's sadism and sanity took a turn for the worse. The supernatural occurrences itself can be shown where she saw a ghost of a child when Alice tries to turn on the generator in the basement or how Alice manages to answer the phone despite the place where she lives near the forest has no signal. Her decreasing sanity can be further shown where she ended up trying to drink oil in the shed to quench her thirst and her sadism can be shown where she was overjoyed on reminiscing murdering Rachel and Robert in a gruesome manner.
In addition of reminiscing murdering her family in an overjoyed manner, it was also revealed that she also murdered several people that come to the forest when they tried to see her and tried to bury their bodies in the grave besides her house and when it became stuffed, she then threw her victims bodies to the well and enjoy to see the surviving people struggled to get out. When checking her mother's picture, it was also revealed that she hated her own family. She also expresses a suicidal tendencies during that day, such as her expressing her displeasure of being alive. After taking the water from the well, it was revealed that the water became black as Alice was uncaring about that stuff in the end as she attempted to continue her chores again tomorrow.
During the second to last day, the supernatural occurrences become a lot worse, and so does Alice's sanity. Her hatred with her family is amplified up to eleven, as Alice expresses her disdain towards her mother again, hoping that she rots in Hell while also telling the spirits of her family and anyone she killed to shut up. In addition, she also express a lot of joy after reminiscing on how she murdered Toby. The supernatural occurrences can be shown when the house suddenly turns into like an abandoned factory, how an evil monster began to approach her and how several things such as a sack filled with food in the kitchen is now filled with human teeth or a barrel full of strange red material. When Alice took the water from the well, it was filled with a red and chunky water. Her wilting sanity itself can be shown on how increasingly suicidal she became and how she ended up eating human bones to quench her hunger. It was also revealed that Alice had murdered 12 people as the spirits from the well told her to become the thirteenth victim in the end. By the time the last day hits, Alice had already lost her grip on her sanity, claiming that it's too late to take the bed and seeing that the creatures that annoyed her from the wall already escaped. Unable to take the pressure anymore, Alice then decided to commit suicide in the end by jumping into the well.
Weeks later, a mysterious detective (or better specifically known as The Chastiser in later games), Jesse Thornheart, attempts to investigate the incident where thirteen people went missing as he had continued this investigation for 3 years straight. The incident itself can be summed up with this story: In the depths of the forest, there lives Alice and the rest of her family members, her mother and her own siblings, Jerry, Rachel, Toby and Robert despite having no father in sight, heavily implied that he died from unknown causes. When Alice suddenly develops a mental illness, possibly developing Misophonia due to her hatred with sounds and noises or being increasingly paranoid due to the whispers of the Skinwalkers, she then began to go ballistic and murdered her family members one by one, with Rachel being stabbed before being killed with an axe after seeing that the knife was too inefficient for her, Jerry having his arm cut off with the same axe before he falls to it, Robert getting his hands burned on a electric stove burner before Alice shoved him in there, and Toby being drowned. Eventually, it all culminated with her killing her mother and several people who went into the forest. Once Alice was unable to fit all of the people in the graveyard next to her house, she then throws some of several bodies to the well with the surviving people struggled to get out and was drowned thanks to the rain, and at one point, she stuffed some of them in the barrels or box outside her home. 12 confirmed people went missing thanks to her rampage. After seeing Alice's body was in the well, Jesse then decided to keep investigating this case and continue to investigate another case involving missing children at another village despite the information that he got was futile in the end. Despite this, Jesse is already aware of the fact that Alice is very suspicious at first glance, due to the circumstances surrounding it and concludes that there is something wrong with the forest where Alice and her family lived.
